God really challenged me one day when I was working with a child
with autism at a childrens day camp. It was very difficult to have him
understand where I was coming from, but I feel that God led me
through the process by softening my heart and really having me tap
into my compassion. I felt the Holy Spirit guiding me that; so I knew
what to say to the child, and how to instruct in a stern, but loving manner that made it possible for the child to understand me.
Then last summer, one of my close friends took the Foundations of
Leadership course, got involved in CREO, and then introduced me to
CREO as a group leader. (Before this, I hadnt really been involved in
the church.)
Children are often distracted. So I need to find the balance between
being serious with them and being playful. It's a continuous learning
process of knowing when to buckle down and get things moving forward, and knowing when to joke around and have fun so that their
attention is maintained. I have come to understand it takes time to be
able to earn the trust and respect of the community.
Every week at Creo, I see the energy in all of the boys and the passion
that they bringespecially to the fun in-house competitions. I love
hanging around them because they are all generally so positive and
supportive of one another.
It's amazing how much Christ-like movement there is happening inside
each student and it's rewarding being able to catch glimpses of the
growing maturity of the young adults in terms of their relationship
with God.
