Lectura: Norm and Criterion Referenced Testing
Read the article about Norm and Criterion Referenced Testing by Linda A. Bond and
analyse the main characteristics of both types of assessments.
What are their advantages and disadvantages?
Talk about your experience as a student: was norm-referenced testing demotivating
or motivating?
How do you think these types of assessment work for young children?
The article is in the virtual classroom and in the following link:
http://pareonline.net/getvn.asp?v=5&n=2

Norm-referenced test (NRT) and criterion-referenced test (CRT) are two

different kind of assessment. The differences between them are because they have
different points of views in reference to their intended purposes, the way in which
content is selected and the scoring process.
Now, I am going to describe the principal characteristics of both models:
-

CRT:

The principal purpose of this method of assessment is determinate if each

student has achieved some concepts.
This method evaluates specific skills of the curriculum.
The individual result is the important. The results of other students are
irrelevant.
-

NRT

This method is used to discriminate between high and low achiviers.

Each individual result is compared with a general result of a predeterminated

before test.
An important disadvantage of NRT could be that are very expensive to create an
I think the results can not be generalized.
From my point of view, NRT is not a good method of assessment for children,
because those who have a result worst than the one who they expected can be
desmotivated to continue learning because they can think they are not good students.
And I think it is false because you can had a bad day when you did the exam. Or for
example the group of pupils who did the exam before and you are been compared with
could be excellent students and their results are not the best to be compared with.
In my opinion, the best method to evaluate young children is the CRT because
they do the tests and are not compared with other people. And if they have bad results
they know they can improve their level studying more hours and having a great effort
but they can not feel they are worst than other pupils. Because of that, they can feel
stressed and down hearted and they can think stop studying and I think is a mistake.
