About VAM

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

About VAM
Overview

Activating VAM optimizes power usage where two PAs are shared among multiple
carriers. The power from two PAs in a specific configuration scenario can be reused to
extend support to the DCH and HSDPA user or to manage the DCH and HSDPA user
traffic.
For example, if a BTSEquipment is in a three carrier (STSR2+1) configuration, a pair of
PAs is used for RRHs or TRDUs. In this configuration, two carriers are mapped on one
PA and the third carrier is mapped on the second PA. If activated, VAM enables optimum
utilization of the second PA.
VAM is implemented in the digital domain. Although VAM is a software feature, it may
require hardware addition for the supported BTS configurations. For example, in STSR2
configuration, if the BTS is configured with single PA, an additional PA for VAM
implementation must be added. For more details, see Hardware requirements (p. 3-4).
Activation of the VAM feature offers the following advantages:

Efficient power usage compared to traditional mapping of carriers on single PA.

Transparent operation for all existing HSPA transmissions.

Lesser negative impact on the non-MIMO UE performance.
Optimization of transmitted phase to maximize efficiency and overall system
performance.

If VAM is activated on all the three carriers, STSR3-M offers 33% more power per carrier
in comparison to a typical STSR2+1 scenario. For example, with a pair of 60W PA or a
twin PA, 40W can be made available per carrier with VAM instead of 30W with
non-MIMO power configurations. Because of the power optimization, the HSDPA
support and cell throughput is enhanced by 10%, depending on factors such as cell size
and radio environment.
Note: Activation of the VAM is supported for one, two, and three carrier BTS with up
to three sectors only.

Introduction to VAM

VAM matrix

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

VAM matrix
Overview

VAM is a common pre-coder that balances the power in PAs for non-MIMO users.
VAM maps input signals on to the physical antennas with specific coefficient value for
each path. VAM is as a matrix of four coefficients, w5, w6, w7, w8, and two adders
applied to two input signals from the corresponding virtual antennas.
The four coefficients from the VAM matrix are differentiated only by phases as equal
amplitude is required to balance power usage between the physical antennas. The first PA
and the second PA are configured to amplify the output signals of the VAM function
before being radiated by the antennas. The coefficients of the VAM matrix are fixed. The
coefficients are configured on the BTSCell.
Note: Selection of the coefficients for the VAM matrix is based on the non-MIMO
user performance and the requirement to balance power usage.
Figure 2-1, VAM matrix functions (p. 2-3) illustrates the functions of VAM matrix.

PA defense

If a PA fails, the transmission paths are reconfigured. The VAM coefficients are
reconfigured by the CCM OAM with values. These values do not depend on coefficients
a1 to a4 and 1 to 4 to enable the channels that are fed to the failed virtual antenna to
use the other transmission branch. When PA recovers, the reverse procedure is applied
and the initial VAM matrix configuration is restored.
In case of the first and second transmitter branch failure, VAM coefficients changes.
Figure 2-3, Coefficient values for the first transmitter branch failure (p. 2-4) shows the
coefficient values assigned for the first transmitter branch failure.

As VAM coefficients provided by the OAM are in polar format of amplitude and phase,
the PQ3 converts the coefficients from polar to Cartesian format.
Note: The same PA defense procedure is used when both transmitter (Tx) and receiver
(Rx) branches fail.

Balancing power using VAM

Overview

VAM technique is similar to the single-antenna transmission. In a single-antenna

transmission scenario, the user terminal demodulates the W-CDMA signal as if there is no
transmission diversity in the system. VAM, however, transmits the same signal on two
transmit antenna ports with a difference in phase.
VAM transmits diversity scheme to reuse the power from two PAs for single DCH or
HSDPA user.
With VAM activation, the NodeB appears to the UE with fewer transmitter antennas.
VAM transforms the unbalanced power at virtual antenna ports into balanced power at the
physical antenna ports.

Configuration scenarios for VAM support

Overview

The following BTSEquipment radio configuration scenarios support VAM activation:

STSR-1M
STSR-2M
STSR-3M
Note: When VAM is activated for STSRx BTS configuration, it is referred to as
STSR-xM.
For example, STSR-1M is VAM support configured on STSR1.

STSR-1M use case

Figure 3-1, VAM in STSR-1M (p. 3-7) illustrates the STSR-1M configuration scenario
where one carrier is used.
Figure 3-1 VAM in STSR-1M

In this case, VAM allocates additional power to the carriers. So, 2x60W of FR module can
be delivered to a rural cell to improve the DL throughput at cell edge.
STSR-2M use case

In this case, one HSDPA carrier and one Rel99 carrier with two PAs are considered.

Figure 3-2, VAM in STSR-2M (p. 3-8) illustrates the STSR-2M configuration scenario

Figure 3-2 VAM in STSR-2M

In this case, VAM can be used for power pooling to reallocate the unused power from F1
(Rel99) to F2 (HSDPA).
STSR-3M use case

In this case, RRH 2x60W with twin PA can be used to transmit three carriers in the same
frequency band, within 20 MHz with 40W per carrier, that is 2x20W.

The addition of a third PA with a new antenna line.

The reduction of carrier power in case of uneven carrier mapping over PA (2+1).
