New to galleries,
but not to art

Balancing act

Mt. Laurel photographer Honore Young

debuts work publicly for first time
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Mt. Laurel resident Honore
Young has loved art since she was
a child.
However, for many years, she
never displayed her work in a
gallery.
That is all changing this month
as Youngs work sits on display at
her hometown library.
Young has released her photography to the viewing public as the
July and August featured artist at
the Mt. Laurel Library. Youngs
photography is on display in the
librarys Internet Caf through
Aug. 28.
This is Youngs first foray into
the world of art galleries. In the
past, she said she has focused on
mostly doing commissioned artwork.
Showing in general and
gallery representation is something Im trying to break into
now, she said.
Young may be new to galleries,
but she is not new to art. Young
described herself as someone
who always had a keen eye for

shadows and colors, even when

she was a child.
Heading into college, Young decided she wanted to turn her talent for art into a profession. She
went to The Savannah College of
Art and Design and earned a
bachelors degree. Today, she does
renderings for an architectural
design firm.
For many years, Youngs artwork focused mostly on paintings, murals and illustration.
However, the library gallery doesnt have any of those works. This
gallery instead focuses on photography, an area of art Young has
only recently dabbled in.
It was four years ago when
Young became a mother for the
first time. With the responsibilities of parenthood taking away
from some of the time Young had
for art, she looked toward a less
time-consuming medium.
As a new mother, I found it difficult to find the time to spend
with (her son) and capture things
in a way that I used to be able to,
Young said. So after he was

Township officials
help create new
kid-friendly,
colorful design
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Mt. Laurel Township officials
have come up with a look for the
Paws Farm Nature Center.
It isnt a new look with the
barns and outhouses on the township-owned and operated property, nor is it a change with the
farms programs, classes or the
dozens of animals at the site.
The change is a new logo for
the nature center.
Township manager Maureen
Mitchell said officials have been
looking to update the Paws Farm
logo this year. She worked with

sign, to create the new logo.
Mitchell said the township had
a number of goals in mind when
designing the new logo. One of
the most important ideas was to
make the logo attractive to families and kids, at whom Paws
Farms programs and classes are
aimed.

make it kid friendly and to inform the public that this local
treasure is owned and operated
by the township, Mitchell said.
To make the logo more attractive, designers opted to create a
portrait around the words Paws
Farm Nature Center. In the logo,
the words Paws Farm are
brown with a brown picket fence
surrounding it on either side. The
Nature Center portion of the
name is green with blades of
grass on either side.
A couple elements of familiar
Paws Farm images were worked
into the logo. A pawprint, something included in many Paws
Farm logos of the past, was
placed inside the letter a in
paws, with four multi-colored toes
above it. The farms signature red
barn was also worked into the
background.
When the logo was unveiled to
Mt. Laurel Township Council,
Mitchell said the goal was to create an attention-grabbing and attractive logo.

in our opinion

N.J. pride on a national stage

World-Cup winning womens soccer team has four Garden State members
or once, New Jersey has something to be proud of. The Garden State can proudly boast that
four of its own were a part of the U.S.
womens national team that won the
World Cup last week, among them the
star of the final game against Japan
Carli Lloyd, who scored three goals.
Lloyd, who attended Rutgers University, is originally from Delran and now
resides in Mt. Laurel. Lloyd has always
been the most well-known member of
the team from New Jersey.
Entering this year, she was already
the all-time leading scorer (with 61
goals) for a player who has played exclusively as a midfielder. And she has
always seemed to shine in the biggest
moments. In addition to the three goals

Your thoughts

team win the World Cup? Wed love to
hear about your experience, and what
the victory means to you.

in the World Cup finale, Lloyd also

scored both of the teams goals in the
Gold Medal winning game against
Japan in the 2012 London Olympics.
New Jersey can be proud of more
than just Lloyd, though. We can celebrate midfielder Tobin Heath, from
Basking Ridge, who also scored a goal
in the World Cup final game. Point
Pleasants Christine Rampone a defender who has played in five World
Cups for the U.S. and Heather OReilly, a midfielder from East Brunswick,

were also big participants for the team.

The victory by the womens soccer
team was something we should all be
proud of, and it gives us New Jerseyans a feather to put in our collective
cap. Not everything about our state is
bad; we make significant contributions
to our country on a daily basis.
While the World Cup is just a sporting event, its something that bands
our country together. Its something
that people watch all around the world,
whether they are avid fans of soccer or
have never watched the sport before.
The victory by the womens national
team gives all of us a great sense of
pride in our country, and its thanks in
large part to four of the Garden States
own.

born, I shifted into photography.
Young said her eye for lighting,
shadows and colors she possesses
with her paintings and illustration work allowed her to make the
transition to photography. She
credits her mother for giving her
such a well-trained natural eye.
My mother did a lot of photography, Young said. It was something she gave me an eye for.
The photos in Youngs library
gallery may look familiar to
some. Young took photos of wellknown places and events around
the South Jersey and Philadelphia region.
Theres a couple shots at
Kirbys Mill, some of the 2015 PRade at Princeton University and
a couple in Philadelphia, Young
said.
Young said there is a bit of
nervousness about displaying her
work for the first time, mainly because she wants the public to
enjoy her work. However, she received some positive reviews and
interest earlier in July, when she
was hanging her work in advance
of the gallerys opening.
While I was hanging some
pieces, two of the library patrons
talked to me about it, she said. I
do think the people in the library
enjoy these exhibits. Its almost
part of the fun to get different
peoples perspective and see what
they think about it.
Young is planning to use the library gallery as a springboard
into doing more gallery work in
the future.
Ive done work from Georgia
to Maine, a lot of small murals
and paintings, Young said.
But Im looking to get some
grants in the future. They like to
see some gallery representation,
and I thought this is a great way
to start.
All of Youngs photography on
display at the library is for sale.
To contact Young, email awe.perpetual@gmail.com or call (609)
685-8101.
