vacy. What vines would grow
on the bars (complete shade)
and have fragrant flowers or
foliage?
That may be a couple of re-
strictions too many, but we’ll
try. First, there are fewer
evergreen flowering vines
than deciduous ones. Plus,
most bloom only one time per
year, usually for a couple of
weeks. But, most critically,
most won’t bloom very well if
they’re in full shade. Coming
as close as we can, Carolina
jessamine is one of our best.
However, it flowers early in
the spring, when tempera-
tures would probably still be
fairly cool. Confederate star
jasmine is richly fragrant,
and it blooms during mid- to
late spring. It must be pro-
tected from temperatures be-
low 20 degrees, so it’s really
only a permanent option in
the southern half of the state.

Apparently 2009 has not produced a fa-
vorable environment for one of our major
agricultural and landscape pests — the
grasshopper.
The past few years we’ve seen pastures
devastated by an early and persistent popu-
lation of grasshoppers. However, 2009 has
been a different story, at least to this point.
The timely rains and warm humid condi-
tions provide an ideal environment for the
development of the fungus, Entomopthora
grylli, which attacks grasshoppers and can
cause a high mortality rate. Fungal spores
develop on and in the body of the infected
grasshopper. These spores become airborne
and infect other grasshoppers. Under warm
humid conditions, great numbers of grass-
hoppers may be destroyed by this fungus.
Even though early season numbers aren’t
high, that doesn’t mean we won’t have a large
late hatch since they can hatch throughout
the summer. Ranchers and homeowners
should watch closely for grasshoppers and

Civic Center strives to be earth friendly

The Decatur Civic Center, already
one of the most critically acclaimed
community centers in the greater met-
ropolitan area, has taken another step
towards providing the best atmosphere
for its customers and employees – its
going green.
In January, the civic center was
awarded a Level I Clean Zone certifi-
cation by JanPak Inc. for the center’s
commitment to creating a healthier
workplace environment through the
implementation of responsible clean-
ing products, systems and program
solutions.
JanPak’s goal is to educate building
just as effectively as what they may
be currently using,” said John Davis,
an account manager for JanPak Inc.
“We even work with them achieving
cleaner air and eventually a recycling
program.”
At the beginning of the year, survey-
ors with JanPak, the leading supplier
of distinctive and responsible cleaning
and packaging solutions, came to the
civic center and did a check of cleaning
procedures and products and gave cer-
tain recommendations to civic center
director Duffy Terry.
“We added some motion detector
lights to save energy when we weren’t
around and changed out the lights
that are always on with lower-voltage
“They are supposed to function and
last just as long as regular floor mats,
and I can at least promise they are as
heavy as the old mats,” Terry joked.
The idea of “going green” has come
to the forefront in the last decade as
more negative information about the
current state of the planet has become
available, and Terry said that he knows
every little bit helps.
“With all that is going on, all that
we hear on the news about the state of
the environment, we all have to do our
part to better conditions,” he said.
The civic center is currently working
toward the Level 2 certificate, which
includes things such as a recycling
program, a corporate environmental

owners and businesses on the proper
environmentally safe cleaning meth-
ods and products that are also cost ef-
fective.
“For people and businesses that want
to be green, we try and teach them
about certain cleaning products and
tools that are ‘green,’ but also work
bulbs,” Terry said. “We also installed
automatic flushers in the toilets, as
well as touchless soap dispensers and
towel dispensers in the bathrooms.”
Terry even said they replaced most
of the floor mats in the building with
ones made completely out of old coke
bottles.

The 11th annual Walk Across Texas

To get started, you have to buy

and then pre-purchase a certain
amount of minutes (for talk or text)
that must be used within a speci-
fied period of time. (Note: If you
already have a phone, with one of

a prepaid phone.)
The amount of minutes you pur-
chase ranges from 30 to 1,000 and
typically must be used within 30
to 90 days, up to a year depending
on the carrier you choose and the

over if you add time before they

Ovarian cancer is a deadly disease partly because symptoms are
so indistinct that women are often not diagnosed until it is too late.
Recently, the hunt for better screening methods has produced a way
of more effectively screening for the disease. According to a study of
