CLASS B

BUS PRE TRIP INSPECTION


REMOVE KEYS FROM INGNITION
Wheels are chocked
Front of Vehicle
A. Bus Clearance Lights: should be amber in color, not cracked or missing,
make sure they are secure, mounted properly and are clean.
B. Student Lights: check that strobe light (if equipped) works and is not
broken. Checks that alternating amber and red lights are working and not
broken and clean.
C. Windshield: clear, no obstructions or damage to the glass
D. Wiper Arms & Blades: blades and arms mounted securely, not damaged
and operating smoothly
E. Head Lamps: make sure they are clear, clean, not missing and securely
mounted
F. Turn Signals: amber in color, not cracked, not missing & securely mounted
G. No Leaks: no fluid leaks under engine compartment, no puddles on ground
H. Stop Arm: check stop arm is mounted securely to frame of vehicle, checking
for any loose fittings and damage. Check stop arm fully extends and arm
lights are operational when operated
I. Driver Side Mirror: checks if mounted securely, no cracks or brakes in glass
and clean.

Engine Compartment
A. Engine Oil: checking dipstick and oil level must be between the, add & fill
mark. Must perform or describe.
B. Exhaust System: engine stack to muffler visible parts are secure, no loose
clamps, no cracks, holes, severe dents or signs of leakage such as soot
C. Alternator: belts are not cracked, frayed & no loose fibers, no signs of wear.
Push belt with hand to check the deflection, should be no more than to
play. Alternator is mounted securely, all wires and connections are secure,
and no evidence of damage.
D. Water Pump: correctly identifies water pump & belt that drives the water
pump, confirms mounted securely, not loose, belt no more than to inch
play, no signs of wear or loose fibers.
E. Coolant Level: look at sight glass or check reservoir for adequate level
F. Power Steering Fluid & Pump: check dipstick to read fluid level. Must
demonstrate or explain. Identifies belt that runs pump, to inch
deflection, no cracks or excessive wear.
G. Air Compressor: indicates that it is mounted securely, points to correct belt
the drives compressor, no more than to inch deflection excessive wear
or no cracks.
H. Steering Box/Hoses: must be securely mounted, look for missing nuts &
bolts, no leaks. Checks hoses for loose fibers, cracks, leaks.

I. Steering Linkage: connecting rods and arms are securely mounted, not
bent, cracked or worn, joints & sockets arent loose and crown nuts &
cotter keys are secure and in place. Must check gear box to tie rod.
Front Suspension
A. Spring Mount (front &rear, u bolt): check spring attachment (brackets, bolts,
bushings) are in place, no cracked or broken spring hangers, no missing or
damaged bushings,
B. Springs: no cracks, shifting, broken leaf springs.
C. Shock Absorber: securely mounted top and bottom, no damage, not leaking
or misting.

Front Brake Area


A. Air Hoses: no cracks, worn or frayed hoses, securely mounted at both ends.
Note: trucks with hydraulic brake lines carrying fluid to assembly, check for
cracked, worn or frayed hoses, coupling secure and not leaking
B. Brake Chamber: not dented, cracked, securely mounted, not leaking, no
loose or missing clamps
C. Slack Adjuster: check slack adjuster & pushrod for bent, broken, loose or
missing parts, with brakes released checks for no more than 1 movement
D. Brake Drum: checks brake drum or rotors , no cracks, dents or holes, no
loose or missing bolts, brake linings not worn dangerously thin, no oil or
grease contaminating drum

Front Wheel & Tire


A. Rims: not bent or cracked, no welding repairs, no rust indicating rim is loose
on wheel
B. Tires: (steering tires) tread depth 4/32nd, checks tread is evenly worn, no
cuts or damage to rail or sidewalls, valve caps and stem are not missing,
broken or damaged. Check pressure with gauge or tire thumper
C. Lug Nuts: all are present, not loose, no cracks at bolt holes, no distortions of
bolt holes, look for rust trails, around the lugs, which would indicate loose
nuts.
D. Hub Oil Seal: check to see that the seal is not leaking and if there is a sight
glass present the oil level is adequate.

Side of Bus
A. Glass & Windows: check glass is not broken and clean
B. Frame: bus frame rails free of cracks, unautherized welds or holes, no
missing or damaged cross memebers.
C. Drive Shaft: front and rear drive shaft is not bent or cracked, coupling
appear secure, not loose or dangling, no debris lodged in couupling.
D. Fuel Tank: tank is not dented or cracked, mounting straps are secure, no
loose or missing bolts, cap is hand tight. There are no leaks from cap or tank

E. Lights & Reflectors: amber front. Red in rear, not cracked & securley
mounted, reflective tape intact.

Rear Axle
A. Brake Chamber ( dual): not cracked or dented, securelty mounted, no leaks,
no loose or missing clamps
B. Hoses/Lines: securely mounted, cracked or frayed hoses and couplings and
fittings secure and not leaking
C. Slack Adjuster: securely mounted, check the slack adjuster and pushrod is
not bent, broken, loose or missing parts, if brakes released moves no more
then 1
D. Drum: check brake drum or rotors for cracks, dents or holes. Checks for
loose or missing bolts, checking linings or disk pads (where visible) are not
worn dangerously thin, no contaminant such as oil
E. Spring Mount (front &rear, u bolt): check spring attachment (brackets, bolts,
bushings) are in place, no cracked or broken spring hangers, no missing or
damaged bushings,
F. Springs/Air Bags: not missing, no cracks, shifting, broken leaf springs.
Checks air ride for damage, leaks, not broken or distorted coils.
G. Shock Absorber: securely mounted top and bottom, no damage, not leaking
or misting
H. Rims/ Bud Rims: not bent or cracked, no welding repairs, no rust indicating
rim is loose on wheel, Dual rims are budded up, free from foreign objects
I. Tires: TCP tread depth 2/32nd, checks tread is evenly worn, no cuts or
damage to rail or sidewalls, valve caps and stem are not missing, broken or
damaged. Check pressure with gauge or billy club. Pressure to manufactures
specifications.
J. Lug Nuts: all are present, not loose, no cracks at bolt holes, no distortions of
bolt holes, look for rust trails, around the lugs, which would indicate loose
nuts.
K. Axel Seal: check to see that the seal is not leaking and if there is a sight
glass present the oil level is adequate.
L. Splash Guards: securely mounted and not damaged, approx 6 from
ground and not dragging

Rear of Bus
A. Rear Emergency Exit: check doors open and close properly, no loose
hinges or broken glass
B. Lights & Reflectors, Student Lights: red in color on rear, amber
front facing, not cracked, damaged, secrurely mounted
Passenger/Driver Entry Lift
A. Door Entry: check the door is not damaged, operates smoothly &
closes securely, hinges are securley mounted and seals are intact, not
torn or dry rotted. Check for damage to glass on the door and is clean.

Hand rails are properley secured and step light are in working order.
Steps are clear of any obsticals and tread has no excessive wear. If
equiped with handicap lift checking for leaking, damaged or missing
parts, explain how
B. Doors (baggage compartment): checking that compartment doors
are not damaged, operate properly and latch securely.
Inside of Bus
A. Mirrors: check all mirros interior and exterior, properly aligned and
adjusted for my veiw, clean, with no visible damage
B. Windshield: clean no illegal stickers, no major damage or spider
cracks, or major chips
C. Seating: checking all seats are secure to floor, walk-ways are free of
debris, if equipped seatbelts are in good working condition & properly
mounted
D. Emergency Door: check door opens & closes securely, buzzer
activates when door is opened and ignition is on
E. Emergency Equipment: fire extinguisher is properly rated for
vehicle, securely mounted and charged, not expired. 3 reflective
tranigles, and spare fuses, emergency kit
Engine Start Up
A. Safe Start: depress clutch if equipped, gearshift is in neutral position,
wait for dials to settle, then crank engine over with the clutch
depressed, making sure in park or neutral
B. ABS: ABS light illuminates upon startup and quickly goes out, if not
indicates a problem with the ABS system and must be check out asap
C. Oil Pressure: builds to normal range of 30 to 60 psi
D. Voltage Gauge: is charging between 12 -15 volts
E. Temperature Gauge: working and climbing to normal operating
range,
F. Wipers: are in good working condition with proper tension on
windshield, fluid works
G. Heater & Defroster: turn on and feel heat.
H. Steering Wheel: 2 play on 20 wheel (5-10 degrees)
I. Horn: sound city horn, sound highway horn
J. Light Indicators: turn on signals, and point to working indicators on
dash,
R,L, 4w, HB, LB,

Light Check

While building air can check external lights, driver must communicate which
light is being checked
A. Head Lights: working, low beam and high beam
B. Directional Lights: left, right, 4ways, sides & markers. Red or amber
in color
C. Student Lights/Arm & Stop Sign: checks student lights on front and
rear of bus,
If equipped stop arm and stop sign activates when applied.
D. Marker & Clearance Lights: sides, top, front, rear. Amber or red
E. Parking Lights: light on
F. Brake Lights: rear of unit light up when applied red in color

Brakes remove chock


A. Parking Brake: brake is set (out position) 1st gear pulls forward to
make sure parking brake will hold,
B. Service Brake: releases parking brake, pulls forward approx 5mph,
applies service brake making sure they will stop the bus and vehicle
does not pull to one side which might indicate a suspension problem
Hydraulic Brake
A. Pump brake pedal 3 times, hold for 5 seconds, should not depress or
move within 5 seconds. If equipped with hydraulic reserve backup
system, key off, depress pedal and listen for sound of reserve system
electric motor
Air Brake Check (if equipped)
MUST PREFORM IS PROPER SEQUENCE or automatic failure
A. Build air to governor cutoff 100-125 psi, listen for spit
shut engine off but leave key in on position
YELLOW BUTTON OR PARKING BRAKE MUST BE PUSHED IN OR
RELEASED!!!
A. Leak Check: depress brake for 1 minute, should loose no more than 3
psi
B. Low Pressure Alarm: pump brake, warning light & buzzer should
activate by 60 psi

C. Emergency Brake Apply: continue pumping brake pedal, YELLOW


(BRAKE BUTTON) should pop out about 20-40 psi
