Sootblowers
The Sootblowers which utilize steam from the
boiler are intended to remove slag and ash
from boiler tube surfaces.
Steam is taken from the Primary Superheater II
Outlet Header. From there, the pressure is
reduced at the Sootblower Blower Reducing
Station to 500 psig or 34.5 barg.

Percentage of Calcium (CaO) and
Magnesium (MgO)
- High amounts cause furnace ash to be reflective reducing furnace
heat transfer

Percentage of Sodium (Na2O)


- High amounts cause more tenacious fouling of superheat/reheat
surfaces

Ash Fusion Temperature

- Low ash fusion temperature can cause superheat slagging

Alignment

In order to minimize erosion, alignment


of the sootblower assembly is critical due to
the close proximity of the blower nozzle to
the boiler tubes.
Alignment is set during Construction.

one for the Boiler Sootblowers and one for
the Air Heater Sootblowers.

Control

Operating the sootblowers is accomplished


through the DCS system. Various blowing
sequences can be preprogrammed or the desired
number of sootblowers can be selected
manually.

Blowing Frequency

Determining how frequent the Boiler and


Air Heaters will require sootblowing is based on
the fuel being fired and related Boiler
Performance.
A Sootblowers steam blowing pressure will be
determined during commissioning.

Blowing Pressures

If removal of slag or fouling (ash) is not being


removed effectively, the blowing pressure can
increased.
Increased steam pressure results in higher
steam velocities. However, higher steam velocities
increase the potential for tube erosion.

Failure to Retract

If a sootblower becomes stuck in the boiler


NEVER, NEVER close the sootblowers
Isolation Valve. Steam acts to cool the
Blower and protect it from heat damage.
A Special Retracting Tool is provided to
retract the blower.
