Title
Proposed Plan and Isometric View of Reactor Transfer Piping

General Notes
2.1

The purpose of this drawing is to indicate a suggested layout of the transfer piping in the
reactor/heater/combined feed exchangers area. UOPs hydraulic calculations have been
based on this proposed layout. UOP desires to minimize the piping loads on the reactor
nozzles by taking the thermal movements into the heater.

2.2

The dimensions, elevations and orientations shown on this drawing are approximate and
may vary to suit the actual equipment and plot arrangement.

2.3

The elevations of all equipment shown on UOP Drawing 974901-840-01-A1 are

estimates. Determining the final elevations of all equipment is the responsibility of the
customer/contractor. The final reactor tangent line elevation is to be determined by the
contractor considering the future design of the CCR section.

2.4

The front face of the Combined Feed Exchangers Outer Diameter is located 50 ft (15 m)
from the face of the heaters in compliance with U.S. insurance industry standards. The
CFEs may be located closer to the face of the heaters if permitted by local codes and if
the resulting transfer line layout meets flexibility requirements. The lateral location of
CFEs structure with respect to the Charge Heater shall be determined by
customer/contractor. The final location of the CFEs is the responsibility of the
customer/contractor.

2.5

UOP desires a minimum reactor-to-heater spacing to minimize pressure drop and cost.
This distance shall accommodate the width of a small pipe rack. Typical reactor front face
to heater front face dimension is 30 ft (10 m). Contractor shall determine the final
distance between the face of the heaters and the reactor centerline. The length and width
of the reactor structure shown on UOP Drawing 974901-840-01-A1 are 19 ft (5.8 m)
greater than the largest reactor diameter. This is based on the reactor support skirt being 7
ft (2.1 m) larger in diameter than the bottom reactor diameter and also leaving 6 ft (1.9 m)
of clearance between the reactor skirt support and the outer edge of the structure.

2.6

The future CCR structure must be located as close to the Reactors as possible in order to
minimize catalyst attrition during catalyst transfer between the Reactors and the future
CCR Regenerator.

PROPOSED LAYOUT CRITICAL PIPING

2.7

The customer/contractor is responsible for setting the final equipment layout. The
thermal movements of the heater header and transfer piping shall be based on the
customers final equipment layout, not on this proposed layout. If the final equipment
layout is different than what is shown on this UOP drawing, the customer shall inform the
contractor/heater vendor immediately as the new movements will affect the heater design.
The final configuration of the transfer piping, including all piping supports, shall be the
responsibility of the contractor.

2.8

The final unit hydraulics shall be based on the final configuration as set by the contractor
and is the responsibility of the contractor.

2.9

Contractor shall determine thermal movements of the transfer lines into the heater at the
manifold terminal connections using the temperatures listed in the temperature table on
UOP Drawing 974901-840-01-A1. Contractor shall transmit the calculated movements to
the heater vendor. The use of limit stops on lines entering the heater(s) shall be minimized
to minimize the forces and moments at the reactor flanges. When wicket-style heaters are
used:

Limit stops on the spring support assembly in the x-plane (as shown on UOP Drawing
974901-840-01-A1) are recommended.
The use of Barco struts (or equivalent) is recommended to force movement into the zdirection (into the heater). Locate the struts at the bottom of the elbow closest to the
heater.

2.10

Special consideration shall be given to thermal displacements, reaction displacements,

and externally imparted displacements, as well as their cumulative effects, on the transfer
piping system.

2.11

UOP recommends that heater manifold headers are designed to accept all or a majority of
the resultant movements. To achieve the optimum design, the amount of total movement
to be absorbed by the heater manifold headers and the actual amount of total movement to
be absorbed by the connecting transfer piping is the mutual responsibility of the
contractor and the heater vendor.

2.12

The reactor inlet and outlet nozzles shall be Class 600, as indicated on UOP Drawing
974901-304-10-A1.

2.13

The final orientations of the outlet nozzles, the setting of which is the responsibility of the
customer/contractor, establish the orientation of the reactor internals. It is the
responsibility of the contractor to inform the reactor vendor and reactor internals vendor
of the final outlet nozzle orientations.

2.14

Heater loads shall be supported by the heater structure. Transfer line loads shall be
supported by the reactor structure, with consideration to taking part of the horizontal
piping load to the first heater spring, to minimize the load from the long horizontal piping
runs on the heater structure. The final determination as to how the transfer piping load is
supported is the responsibility of the contractor.

PROPOSED LAYOUT CRITICAL PIPING

2.15

UOP recommends that the contractor create a single pipe stress model (such as
CAESAR), which includes the heater coil, before preparing the heater requisition. For the
heater coil portion of the model, the contractor shall assume the spring supports on the
heater manifold are spaced every 15 ft (5 m). The heater vendor shall review the model.
Then the contractor and heater vendor shall work together to finalize the piping layout
and heater coil design. The contractor shall create a final pipe stress model on the transfer
piping and the heater coil based on the final design.

2.16

Wind and earthquake bracing shall not interfere with thermal growth of the piping
components. Typical spacing between braces is 30 ft - 45 ft (9m 14 m). The contractor
is responsible for determining the final number and spacing of the wind and earthquake
braces.

2.17

Pipe elbows shall be long radius whenever possible to minimize piping pressure drop.
Use short radius elbows only when it is absolutely impossible to use long radius elbows.
Mitered bends may be used as an acceptable alternative to pipe elbows.

2.18

Provide constant springs for the transfer line support. Optimal spring loads are estimated
to be 15,000 lbs 20,000 lbs (7,000 kg 9,000 kg). The spring range shall be a minimum
of 110% of calculated movements. The support attachment shall be at least 250mm (10
inch) from longitudinal seam weld. Provide corrosion resistance coating on the spring
supports.

2.19

There is typically an expansion loop in the piping between the last reactor and the
combined feed exchangers. It is the responsibility of the customer/contractor to ensure the
routing of this piping does not compromise access to the reactors, including manways.
This expansion loop shall not contain any low points or pockets where liquid may
accumulate. See Figures 1, 2 and 3 on sheet 6 of this Project Specification for examples
of acceptable and not acceptable examples of the expansion loop piping.

2.20

The use of piping stops is recommended on the Reactor 3 Outlet to Combined Feed
Exchangers line to minimize the loads on the reactor and exchanger nozzles. UOP
assumes piping stops will be used, which is why the Reactor 3 Outlet nozzle is orientated
perpendicular to the reactor structure and not at an angle.

2.21

For heater requirements, see UOP Project Specification 974901- 201.

2.22

Heater manifold operating temperature shall be assumed to be the same as the piping for
the pipe stress model calculations.

2.23

The design temperature for the inlet and outlet transfer lines shall be 1020 F (549 C).

2.24

Longitudinal welds on the transfer piping shall be offset by 45 degrees between pipe
sections.

2.25

Expansion joints are not allowed in the transfer lines between the heaters, reactors and
combined feed exchangers.

2.26

Contractor shall evaluate using 2 Cr for line savings, including field welds. Contractor
shall select the transfer line metallurgy based on an evaluation of the installed cost,
including field welds. Acceptable transfer line metallurgies are 1 Cr and 2 Cr.

2.27

The routing of the line from the CFEs outlet to the Charge Heater inlet is the
responsibility of the customer/contractor. It is the responsibility of the
customer/contractor to ensure the routing of this piping does not compromise access to the
heaters, reactors, or other equipment in the area it is routed through. The piping shall not
contain any low points or pockets where liquid may accumulate.
