PHILIPPINE CULTURAL VALUES


VALUES
Defined as those standards to which a group or society judges the
desirability and importance of persons, ideas, action, goals and other
sociocultural objects.
Emotional Closeness and Security of the Family
The family is a place where one can come in contact with others in a free and
a spontaneous interaction.
Economic and Social Improvement Value
Every family in the Philippines would like to raise its standard of living and
that of his community.
Philippine Cultural Values can be classified as:
1. Non-rationalism
2. Social acceptance, economic and social improvement values
3. Utang na loob
4. Personalism
Philippine Culture
--is in transition from the adherence and practice of the traditional to the
modern and industrialized one.
Philippine Value Orientation
Most of the values Filipinos hold dear are integrated into the characteristics
of the people. These beliefs and practices have been acquired from
generation to generation and have been incorporated in the personality of
the Filipino.
Non-rationalism
This refers to the tendency to perceive thoughts, objects, events and persons
as sacred.
Animism
or the belief in spirits pervades farming and fishing practices.
Bahala na
attitude means leaving matters as they are, leaving nature to take its coarse.
Fatalism
is shown in attitudes such as suerte, tadhana, malas, and buenas.
These attitudes of fatalism help the individual to endure suffering, poverty,
sickness, tragedy and badluck.
Optimistic Fatalism
has long been ingrained in the Filipino because he has found out that he has
little control over his environment. Typhoons, floods, epidemics, crop failure

are to be expected.
Social Acceptance
The Filipino wants to be accepted by his fellowmen for what he is and to be
treated according to his status.
Pakikisama
is yielding to the will of the majority or the leader of the group.
Euphemism
is stating an unpleasant truth, opinion or request as pleasantly as possible.
The use of the
go-between
is another means of [reserving or restoring smooth interpersonal relations
(SIR according to FRANK LYNCH).
Hiya
means more than mere embarrassment or shame; it means the
uncomfortable feeling of being found in an unacceptable position or doing
something not socially acceptable.
Amor Propio
is another aspect of social acceptance closely to hiya. This is a Spanish term
meaning self-esteem.
Authority
refers to the emphasis on the power and importance of an authority figure.
Status power and control are important attributes of an individual.
