By Kate Rechtzigel
The meeting for June 7 was a
short one. The members talked
about the t-shirts that we are getting at the July meeting, workers
for the clover stop, and that the
next meeting is to be held at Ann
Fitzgeralds house for the farm
tour. Kira Quam and I were not in
attendance. We were at a Gopher
Dairy Camp learning about how
to show dairy cattle.
We participated in an auction
that first day and ended up bidding against each other for the same
calf, which was the last one.
We also participated in workshops the next day, where the highlights were learning more about
showmanship, feeling the inside
of a cows stomach, talking about
all the preparations that we need
to make for the fair, making liquid nitrogen ice cream and learning about dairy foods. Later, we
clipped our calves and went to a
Twins game, where the Twins lost.
On the last day, we showed our
calves. Kira and I shared a calf
whose name was Portia. I got last
place and Kira got fifth in our
classes. After this we went to a
calf care and nutrition class, where
I learned a lot more about caring
for calves. Later we toured TCF
Bank Stadium and saw the locker
room and got to stand on the field
for a picture. To finish off the camp,
we met Princess Kay.
If you are interested in joining
4-H, come to our meetings the first
Sunday of the month at Dale
Luthern Church at 7 p.m., unless
otherwise noted. The Gopher Dairy
Camp is held once a year at the
University of Minnesota for those
in grades 7-11, who have not yet
completed twelfth grade.
