Young Innovator Design Competition

Sanihub Malawi are pleased to announce our first ever Young Innovator Design Competition. At Sanihub we encourage improvement of sanitation in low income areas of Malawi through a business approach. This involves getting the design of latrines right, but also having a target market for those latrines and being able to sell them. We invite you to.

Re-invent the Latrine

Challenge 1: Urban latrines

The vast majority of the people in Blantyre are latrine users; yet latrines are often unaffordable, poorly constructed, dark, smelly, unpleasant and very difficult to empty.

We challenge you to design an affordable latrine (or upgrade to existing latrines e.g. a superstructure, a pedestal, a slab) that is technically sound and pleasant to use. You should bear in mind what your target market are willing to spend, availability of materials, methods of construction, and distribution of the product. We encourage you to (a) make this product affordable for low income communities (b) design a product that is very simple and quick for a household to construct/install , (c) think about the sustainability of your design e.g. a latrine that has access points for emptying once it is filled, a superstructure that is suitable for weather in Blantyre.

Innovative design and use of materials is encouraged.
