The Republic of Korea: Model UN
The Republic of Korea, also known as South Korea, is a sovereign state in East Asia that
is bordered to the North by the Peoples Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea). The
Republic of Korea officially came into existence after World War II during the Potsdam
Conference. There they marked the 38th parallel as the boundary between a northern zone of the
Korean peninsula, which was to be occupied by the USSR, and a southern zone, that was to be
controlled by U.S forces. In 1948, a republican constitution was adopted and the first president
was elected. The new republic was recognized as a legal government of Korea by the UN on
December 12th, 1948. The nation was then entered into the UN as an official member in 1991.
Due to the shortage of labor in certain occupations and jobs in the country, foreign
workers (many from China) have been drawn to the country in large quantities. The nation, due
to the increasing amounts of labor shortages, has let migrant workers come into the country to
work low-wage jobs without social benefits. The South Korean immigration policy is mostly
founded upon acts such as the Nationality Act, which states that persons with at least one Korean
parent are automatically granted Korean nationality from birth, and the Framework act on the
treatment of workers.
South Korea, in view of the religious and ethnic conflicts in western and middle Africa,
strongly condemns the seizing of power and the violent acts committed. South Korea strongly
supports the ideas laid in the Responsibility to Protect, which states that nations must protect
their populations from mass atrocitys and crimes. The South Korean government also reaffirms
its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and the unity of CAR
(Central African Republic). However, South Korea also believes that CAR fails to protect its
citizens from the hardships of war and that the international community has the right and the
responsibility to intervene through measures such as economic sanctions and military
intervention.
The UN Immigration Control Act (Republic of Korea) enacted on March 5, 1968, states
the details concerning immigration control for all Korean nationals and foreigners entering into
the nation, the failure for foreigners to meet enter requirements, refugees, the duty of the
government to take the necessary measure to protect industrial trains and the regulation of illegal
immigrants.
On the topic of the militarization of the Artic, South Korea strongly agrees with several
nations such as United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Poland that the Artic should
belong to everyone. Currently the nation is preparing ice breakers to be sent to the artic, in hopes
of gaining resources there as well. Other than resources, the artic has become an important
possibility on quickening shipping routes between Europe and Asia.
South Koreans are faced with a problem when it comes to the issue of immigration. Many
of its citizens are against the opening of their borders completely to immigrants due to racial
problems. However, because South Korea has the fastest aging population in the world, it will
soon be in need of younger workers. Kim Choong-soo, governor of the Bank of Korea, said I

believe it would be appropriate for us to embrace migrant workers with future-oriented and open
immigration policies.
South Korea, in regards to the conflicts in western and middle Africa, believes that the
most important task for the International community to do now is to change the biased attitudes
and establish a peaceful and stable relationship in CAR. On the issue of Immigration, the people
of South Korea wish to restrict immigrants coming into the country. However, there also needs to
be a steady amount of people coming into the nation to fulfill jobs that would otherwise stay
unoccupied. South Korea is always looking to increase its overseas partnerships, Artic shipping
routes could help cooperation between Europe and Asia. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak
said during Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise and the Federation of Korean Industry If
Norway cooperates with us, Asian routes will be established, which will be very good for its
future. The open access to the artic would also allow South Korea to secure resources such as
fossil fuels. The Republic of Korea would like to create policies that would keep the artic
accessible to all countries.
