Objective
My name is Shannon Murphy and I am a senior nursing student studying at the University of New
Hampshire. I plan to graduate with my BSN in nursing in 2016. In order to continue to acquire more skills,
gain experience, and challenge myself clinically I am greatly interested in a Senior Nursing Student
practicum placement at your hospital on a medical-surgical floor.

Experience
Villa Crest Long Term Care Facility Student Nurse Spring 2014
At Villa Crest in Manchester, NH I gained experience working in a long-term care facility. During my clinical
rotation I assumed full care of one or two patients a day. Working with the patients allowed me to learn
how to administer medications safely, perform assessments, and provide personalized assistance with
things like personal hygiene and ambulation.
Southern New Hampshire Medical Center Student Nurse Fall 2014
At Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, NH I was placed on a medical-surgical floor that
concentrated on the care of patients preparing for or recovering from orthopedic surgeries. During my time
at this facility I was able to expand on the skills I learned at Villa Crest such as medication administration
by gaining exposure to new administration routes such as peripheral and central lines that I did not have
access to in the long-term care setting. I also performed more personalized assessments that fit the
patients needs and health goals.
Throughout my time at this location I was also able to visit various other departments such as cardiology,
respiratory, wound care, and endoscopy where I learned more about the different specializations within
nursing. I took special interest in the Cardiac-Cath lab and spent multiple days shadowing the nurses
within this area.
Southern New Hampshire Medical Center Student Nurse Fall 2014
(Maternal and Newborn Nursing)
In correspondence with my Maternal and Newborn Nursing lecture I spent a semester on the
Maternal/Newborn and Labor and Delivery unit of Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, NH.
During my time on this unit I was assigned one or two couplets a day, which consisted of a mother/baby
pair. I was responsible for the entirety of the care for the mother and baby over the course of the day. In
this role I was responsible for obtaining vital signs per protocol, performing specified assessments, and
providing the mother and father with patient teaching. Through this experience I feel that I really improved
in the area of patient teaching and increased my confidence in communicating and working with patients.
In addition, I was able to work along side staff members to assist with the laboring and birthing process
when the situation arouse. By working in this setting I was able to gain a greater understanding of what it
means to work with a patient in pain and also learn quickly how important it is to work as a team.

The Elliot Hospital Student Nurse

Spring 2015

In continuation with my experience at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, I spent my second
semester of my junior year at the Elliot in Manchester, NH on a medical-surgical floor. This floor had
patients primarily with respiratory issues such as COPD and lung cancer and therefore provided me with an
experience different from what I had already been exposed to. After becoming much more confident in
areas like communication, teaching, and medication administration, a lot of what I learned at The Elliot
Hospital was centered on improving my skills when it came to assessing patients. Along with the staff
members I performed specialized assessments that went more in depth into areas of concern for each
patient.
Portsmouth Regional Hospital Student Nurse

Spring 2015

(Behavioral Health)
As part of my Psychiatric Nursing course I was able to spend a semester working with patients on the
Behavioral health Unit in Portsmouth Regional Hospital. From this experience I was able to gain a
significant amount of experience speaking with patients and communicating with them using therapeutic
techniques. The skills that I learned while participating at this clinical rotation will benefit all aspects of
nursing career.
Camp Nurse at Naticook Day Camp

Summer 2013-Present

After becoming certified in responding to emergencies I was offered a job at Naticook Day Camp in
Merrimack, NH as the camp nurse. In the camp setting I am responsible for providing care as needed and
administering medications. I am responsible for caring for over 100 children ages 4 to 15 on a daily basis
and I have perfected skills here ranging from splinter removal and Band-Aid application up to asthma and
allergy management. By working as a camp nurse I have realized my own passion for working with
children and have gained excellent experience when it comes to providing them with the best possible
care.

Other Relevant Experience

Dartmouth Medical Camp 2010
In 2010 I attended Dartmouth Medical Camp at Dartmouth College for students interested in future medical careers. Here
I learned many skills, specifically situations that involved stress or trauma such as caring for patients under emotional stress
or dealing with intense fears. Through various staged scenarios our skills were tested and we were able to gain hands on
experience that forced us to perform in unfavorable situations. Here I learned the importance of confidence and teamwork
and I feel that these skills will continue to benefit me as I move towards my career.
Advanced Health Class
As a sophomore in high school I initiated Merrimack High Schools very first advanced health class. I worked
With my teacher, Mrs. Sarah Clough, to develop a course outline that would allow students to take a deeper look into
various aspects of human health that was not normally covered in the typical health class. The course concentrated on
different health careers, took a closer look at specific diseases, and placed a greater emphasis on education that is
necessary to achieve different careers in the health field.
Public Health Education
In May 2011 I hosted a Lyme Disease awareness night for the town of Merrimack and surrounding communities. At this
event I prepared a presentation which educated residents of the early symptoms and warning signs of the disease as
well as what to do if he or she suspected that someone was infected. In order to provide further expertise on the topic I
also arranged for a local keynote speaker to talk about his experience with the disease and answer questions.
