The SIFE Program

Introduction
SIFE is an international organization that brings together the top
leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better more sustainable
world through the positive power of business.
SIFE’s worldwide network consists of university students,
academic professionals and business leaders.
Working with leading corporate partners and member universities,
SIFE establishes student programs on campuses around the world.
With the support and encouragement of their faculty advisors and
a local business advisory board, SIFE students apply business
concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the
quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
SIFE teams’ projects address a variety of topics, such as market
economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, personal success
skills, environmental sustainability and business ethics. Rather
than mandating a uniform set of projects, teams are encouraged
to work within the framework of these topics while adapting their
approach to the diverse needs of people in different communities.
The result is a program that is global in scope and purpose
with the flexibility and responsiveness of a community-based
organization.
The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual series of
competitions that provides a forum for teams to present the
results of their projects, which are evaluated by business leaders
serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and
national levels, then at the international level when the national
champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
The connections made possible through the SIFE network
are benefiting individuals and communities around the world
while fostering an environment for personal and professional
development among the participants. In addition to the
community aspect of the program, SIFE’s leadership and career
initiatives are designed to create meaningful opportunities for
learning and exchange as well as the placement of students and
alumni with companies with SIFE partner companies.
The Individual SIFE Team
There are intentionally very few rules or procedures established
by SIFE World Headquarters for how teams are organized and
structured. Rules can be found in the SIFE Team Handbook.
Questions a SIFE team may have that are not addressed in that
section are all left to the discretion of the individual SIFE
team to answer.

There are many ways to organize and operate a SIFE team. Every
college or university campus is as unique as the community
it serves. This flexibility allows each school to structure its
SIFE team in a manner that best fits its faculty, student and
community needs. Each SIFE team has complete freedom to put
in place rules and procedures to govern its own activities, beyond
those outlined in this handbook, as long as they are consistent
with the SIFE Membership Guidelines.
This same flexibility applies to each team’s educational efforts.
The only parameters SIFE World Headquarters places on a team’s
educational outreach programs is that they should be designed
to educate others about at least one of the six SIFE educational
topics: market economics, success skills, entrepreneurship,
financial literacy, environmental sustainability and business
ethics. Beyond this, questions as to how many projects teams
choose to do, which audiences they target, whether they design
original educational material or use pre-designed material, etc.,
are all left to the discretion of each team.
A set of “best practices” and suggestions for building a quality
and sustainable SIFE team can be found in the SIFE Team
Handbook, which should be used as an accompanying document
to this guide. A copy of this handbook can be requested from
the SIFE USA Campus Programs Department or downloaded
at www.sife.org. The SIFE USA Campus Programs staff is also
available to meet with teams individually and can provide
personal consultation to teams as they organize and develop their
educational outreach projects.
Sam Walton Fellows
In order to be recognized by SIFE World Headquarters, each SIFE
team must have a faculty advisor. In the United States, faculty
advisors who lead their SIFE team to a Regional Competition are
recognized as Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellows. Contact the
SIFE USA Campus Programs Department for information on how
to apply for a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellowship.
To qualify as a faculty advisor, candidates must be employed by
the college or university they represent. No restrictions are made
as to the specific nature of the applicant’s role at the school
they represent. Each SIFE team may have more than one faculty
advisor. However, each faculty advisor must submit an application
and letter of support from their supervisor separately.
The Competition Process
The Overall Competition
The SIFE Overall Competition provides SIFE teams with the
opportunity to compete against each other and ultimately
determine which team had the most impact improving the quality
of life and standard of living for members of its community
through educating others about the six SIFE educational topics:
Market Economics, Success Skills, Entrepreneurship, Financial
Literacy, Environmental Sustainability and Business Ethics.
The competitive format consists of a written annual report and a
live audio-visual presentation, which the teams present to a panel
of entrepreneurs and executives serving as judges. At the United
States competitions, teams are divided into leagues based on their
performance in the previous year’s competition. First year “rookie”
teams are then evenly distributed among the leagues.
The competition process begins with the SIFE USA Regional
Competitions. Every SIFE team must be approved by SIFE World
Headquarters to compete at a Regional Competition. Regional
Champions then advance to the SIFE USA National Exposition.

The Topic Competitions
In addition to being evaluated on the quality of their overall
program, SIFE teams have the opportunity for recognition in each of
the six specific educational topics.
Active SIFE teams will have the opportunity to submit an online
report describing the educational project they created to meet
each of the six SIFE educational topics.
These entries will be judged prior to the SIFE USA Regional
Competitions. Twenty finalists will be named and the top three
entries in each Topic Competition will receive further awards and
recognition at the SIFE USA National Exposition.

Competition” section of this guide on pages 22-28.
Honors, Awards and Scholarships
No SIFE team exists on its own. Each successful SIFE
team can count a long list of individuals who have contributed
time, energy and creativity on its behalf. SIFE USA has
established several special honors and awards to provide teams
with the opportunity to earn national recognition for their
strongest supporters.
Each honor and award has its own entry format. All submissions are
reviewed and winners are selected by a panel of judges. Complete
details of these honors and awards can be found in the “Honors,
Awards and Scholarships” section of this guide, pages 29-40.

Competition Format & Rules
Written Report
Each competing team is required to create a written (typed) annual
report of its overall program. Annual reports are limited to the
dimensions noted below and can be bound or folded in any manner:
1. Four single sheets of 8 1/2” X 11” paper with print only on one
side of each sheet.
2. Two single sheets of 8 1/2” X 11” paper with print on both sides
of each sheet.
3. One sheet of 11” X 17” paper with print on both sides and folded.
If a team uses a cover or back page, it will count as one of
those pages. Teams should not use folders, report covers, etc. in
conjunction with their annual reports. Teams should utilize standard
binding methods (staples, spiral, wire, etc.) when assembling annual
reports. For examples of annual reports, please visit the Team
Resources section of the SIFE website.
Annual reports are distributed to the judges during the set-up
period as outlined below. Teams will be notified in advance as to
the number of annual reports they are required to bring to Regional
and National Competitions. Active SIFE teams that do not compete
at a 2010 SIFE USA Regional Competition should submit a text
only annual report and team data sheet by May 3, 2010. Failure to
submit these reports will result in the team being suspended as of
September 1, 2010.
Project Verification Form
Every team must submit a completed Project Verification Form in
order to compete at a SIFE USA Regional and National Competition.
This form must be signed by the team’s Sam Walton Fellow, one
student and one other administrator (dean, department chair
or institution president). If a team’s faculty advisor is also an
administrator, the form must be signed by another administrator.
The Project Verification Form serves as an internal audit of projects
and activities at all levels of SIFE competition: regional, national,
and at the SIFE World Cup and must be re-submitted at each level
of competition. Failure to submit this form will result in a team not
being eligible to compete.
Team Data Sheet
This report provides key information on the team and its programs/
activities in the SIFE program year. Although the information
submitted is used by SIFE World Headquarters and will not be
shared with judges at any competitive event, it must be completed
and submitted online by each SIFE team prior to competing at a
regional competition.

Violations
If a team does not submit any of its mandatory reports, it will be
subject to the following process and penalty:
1. The team will have an opportunity to continue and compete so
long as it rectifies the problem prior to making its presentation
time (i.e., secure appropriate signatures on the Project Verification
Form, complete the Team Data Sheet, etc.).
2. If the issue is not rectified, the team will be permitted to
participate in the event and showcase its presentation to the
judges; however, it will not be scored nor will the team qualify for
any awards.
Live Presentation
Each competing team will have a 37 minute time block for
its live presentation. The League Coordinator will keep the official
time. After the League Coordinator formally introduces the Sam
Walton Fellow and team, the time will be precisely divided
as follows:
1. Set-up: 7 Minutes
The team will have a maximum of seven minutes to distribute
written annual reports for judges to review prior to its presentation
and to set-up presentation equipment (boot computers, power
up projectors, check lighting and sound, etc.). Once the team
has tested the equipment, projector lenses must be covered. No
images or text are allowed to be projected and no music or sound
effects are allowed to be generated for the remainder of the set-up
period. If a team violates this rule, the following penalty applies:
Penalty - The League Coordinator will instruct the team to turn off
the audio and/or block the visual until the appropriate time.
2. Live Presentation: 24 Minutes
The team will have a maximum of 24 minutes to give its live
audio-visual presentation.
3. Judges’ Question and Answer Period: 5 Minutes
There will be a mandatory five minute question and answer
session for the judges. During this time, projector lenses must
be covered, no images or text may be displayed and no music
or sound effects may be generated. Please note that any time
remaining from the 24 minute live presentation will be added to
the mandatory question and answer session.
Competition Format & Rules
4. Exit: 1 Minute
The team will have one minute to return the presentation area to
the original set-up and exit the room.
SIFE presentation time blocks are uniform globally; however,
the only exception applies to the Final Round of competition at
the SIFE World Cup and at any SIFE National Competition that
has a Final Round level. For these segments, there will be no
timed set-up period. Final Round competing teams will be given
a reasonable amount of time to set-up and test their audio/visual
equipment and will receive assistance from SIFE’s technical/
production crew, especially where some of the equipment being
used is provided by SIFE. After these have been successfully
tested, the team will be introduced and then give seven-minutes
to distribute its Annual Reports to the judges. The remaining
segments of the Live presentation for the Final Round will
align with the time block outlined above. Teams are strongly
encouraged to have their presentation on a jump drive or CD as
back-up in case data transfer becomes necessary.
Anyone, including faculty, may assist the team with the set-up or
operation of audio-visual equipment, however, only student team
members may participate in the presentation or take questions
from the judges.
No team may set up any equipment in the presentation room
before being formally introduced. All equipment must be self-
powered or use electrical outlets inside the competition room.
Team Biography
No documentation, materials, gifts or other handouts may be
given to any judges with the exceptions of the team’s annual
report and a list of team members, with a brief biography of each
team member for possible recruiting purposes. These Team Bios
may not exceed five pages (front and back) and are subject to
the same dimensions as the annual report. Team Bios may not be
placed inside the Annual Reports and must be distributed to the
judges as a separate document.
Additional Materials and Pre-Screening
Teams are permitted to showcase project-related materials to
judges so long as they are not considered offensive or would cause
any sort of controversy. These materials/props will be screened
and pre-approved at registration by SIFE Staff on the day of the
competition. Each team that has been approved to showcase
project related materials will be provided with an approval

form that must be submitted to the League Coordinator prior to
competing. A sample of the form can be found in the appendix.
Violation
If a team presents or displays items that have not been screened
and pre-approved, it will be automatically disqualified from the
competition.
Live Presentation Time Breakdown:
• 7 - Minute Set-Up Period

• 5 - Minute Question/Answer Session
• 1 - Minute Exit
Regional Competition Application
and Registration Process
All SIFE teams must complete a Regional Competition Application
and receive approval from SIFE to be eligible to compete at a
Regional Competition. The Regional Competition Application is
due online to SIFE by January 25, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. CST.
If your SIFE team is approved to compete, Regional Competition
online registration is required. The deadline for eligible SIFE
teams to register online is February 22, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. CST.

Non-Competing Active SIFE Team Requirement
SIFE wants to know what each team is accomplishing under the
SIFE brand. Active SIFE teams that do not compete at a 2010
SIFE USA Regional Competition are required to submit a text only
annual report (via email is fine) and a Team Data Sheet (online)
by May 3, 2010. Failure to submit these reports will result in the
team being suspended as of September 1, 2010.
Competition Format & Rules
Student Registration Requirement
Any student who attends a SIFE USA competition at any level
must be a registered SIFE student through the online registration
process found at www.sife.org. To view a current list of SIFE team
members for your institution please refer to the Team and Alumni
Roster page of the website.
Reporting Activity
All SIFE teams must distinguish activities and results completed
during the current year and cumulative. SIFE teams must clearly
define their role in projects done in cooperation with their school
or other groups including specific duties they did versus what
their partners did. Procedures for documenting team activity are
explained in detail in the appendix of this document. The same
rules that apply for the Team Data Sheet should be followed when
reporting activity in all SIFE competitive events.
Room Set-Up
SIFE will provide the following equipment in each presentation
room:
1. One eight foot or larger screen
2. One extension cord
SIFE does not provide other equipment of any kind, such as
computers, slide projectors, monitors, TVs, DVD players, carts,
tables, etc. It is the sole responsibility of each team to secure the
use of any other equipment.
Presentation rooms will be locked the evening before the
competition. There is no practice time in competition rooms.

Equipment Failure
If a team’s presentation equipment ceases to operate because of
a power failure in the competition facility, the competition will be
halted until the problem is corrected. If the electronic equipment
the team brings into the competition room fails, the time will
continue to count down from the presentation time block.
Competition Room Access
Competition rooms are open to all registered attendees. SIFE
teams and visitors are invited to watch other teams present, but
they are asked to enter and leave rooms only during the set-up
period. Audience members, with the exception of media and SIFE
staff, are not permitted to exit the room during the Question and
Answer period. The area behind the judges is considered public
domain. Doors to the competition room must remain unlocked and
clear at all times to provide access to SIFE World Headquarters’
staff. Penalty for violating this rule is automatic disqualification.
Video/Copying Policy
By competing at any SIFE sponsored competition, each team grants
SIFE World Headquarters the right and permission to document
and publicize or otherwise utilize its annual report, audio-visual
presentation and outreach projects for illustration, advertising,
training or any other lawful purpose.
SIFE teams may record the presentations of other teams at SIFE
competitions under the following conditions:
1. No lights are to interfere with or inhibit the presenting team.
2. The team videotaping should be courteous and cause the
least amount of distraction possible to the presenting team,
including no rewinding or fast forwarding of tapes or making
any other distracting noises during the presentation.
3. Set-up must be behind judge and audience seating.
4. No video footages and photos taken at SIFE events should
be used inappropriately. Teams may treat these as resources
so long as they are used with respect for the people being
videotaped and photographed.
By attending SIFE events, attendees consent and grant SIFE the right to film,
video, record, or photograph him/her during the course of the event. Attendees grant
permission to SIFE and its agents, employees and affiliated organizations, to use
the media taken of me for use in SIFE publications such as recruiting brochures,
newsletters, and magazines, and to use such media in electronic versions on web
sites or other electronic form or media, and to offer them for use or distribution in
other non-SIFE publications, electronic or otherwise, without notifying me. Attendees
hereby waive any right to inspect or approve the finished photographs or printed or
electronic matter that may be used in conjunction with them now or in the future,
whether that use is known to me or unknown, and attendees waive any right to
royalties or other compensation arising from or related to the use of the media.

Competition Format & Rules
Media Policy
The official SIFE photographer, videographer and members
of the mass media approved by SIFE have full access to all
presentation rooms at any time. This includes the use of lights
and necessary equipment. All teams should be prepared for
the possibility of members of the mass media taping or taking
pictures of their presentations. Penalty for violating this rule is
automatic disqualification.
Misbehavior
Misbehavior is unacceptable because it defames the profile of a
SIFE student and as a result, the SIFE organization. The SIFE
National Office reserves the right to determine what unacceptable
behavior is, but it should be noted that this includes, but is not
limited to: use of foul language, physical battery, intoxication,
harassment, defaming other teams/judges/attendees/hotel staff,
tampering with and/or destruction of venue or SIFE property,
etc. The student and/or team involved in such negative activities
may be disqualified/suspended/expelled from participation at the
particular event or the overall SIFE program. The SIFE National
Office will determine the specific penalty from each action on
a case by case basis and an official letter may be sent to the
institutional administrator(s), notifying them of the incident and
requesting their assistance in ensuring that it does not reoccur.
Observers
Upon approval from SIFE USA, non-competing SIFE teams are
invited to attend any SIFE Regional Competition, SIFE National
Competition and the SIFE World Cup as observers. Registration
is required. Please contact your Campus Program Manager or
the SIFE USA Campus Programs Department for information on
how to register.
Understanding the Judging Process
SIFE believes that the more knowledge teams have of their points
of evaluation and the scoring process, the better-prepared and
successful they can be. In an effort to provide insight on this, the
following illustrates an outline of SIFE’s judging process at all
competitions:
1. Judges are taken through an in-depth orientation process,
at which they are introduced to SIFE’s overall program and
trained on how to best evaluate the competing teams.

2. Each judge takes the Judges’ Oath, committing to providing
fair and quality assessments of the teams’ overall programs
(see page 26 of the 2009-2010 SIFE Team Handbook for a
copy of the Judges’ Oath).
3. During each presentation, judges will assess the quality
and sustainability of the SIFE team’s initiatives, using the
Individual Team Evaluation (ITE) Sheet to take notes and
assign scores (see page 27-28 of the 2009-2010 SIFE Team
Handbook for a sample of the ITE Sheet).
4. One or more veteran judges will be appointed as a League
Coordinator and will serve as the facilitator of the room,
ensuring that the team presentations begin on time and that
all judges are on-track and have been present for all the
presentations (in order for their votes to count during the
scoring process).
5. At the conclusion of the last presentation, judges then
participate in the scoring process, at which time they use
their notes on the ITE Sheet, as well as information learnt
through team annual reports and presentations, to vote on how
effectively the teams measured and demonstrated that they
created economic opportunity by helping others through the
topics of: Market Economics, Success Skills, Entrepreneurship,
Financial Literacy, Environmental Sustainability, and Business
Ethics. They also evaluate teams on how successfully they
developed and executed a strategy to ensure the long-term
sustainability of their team and educational programs. Each of
these 7 criterion is worth 20 points, for a total possible score
of 140. Note: ITE Sheets will be returned to teams within 2
weeks of a competition.
Important Notes
The scoring process is a closed session - open only to judges and
led by the trained League Coordinator and/or SIFE staff member.
Judges are not permitted to consult with one another or influence
the votes of others. Neither are they permitted to hold discussions
or consult with SIFE staff. Although teams will be assessed and
scored on their programs and not presentations, SIFE does permit
judges to offer feedback on annual reports and audio/visual
presentations. However, no point value is awarded for the latter.
All voting results are reviewed and verified by SIFE staff who use
an official scoring process and Score Verification Sheet provided
by SIFE World Headquarters.
SIFE USA Regional Competitions
Name Badge Policy
For security reasons, no one will be allowed to participate in any
SIFE event without displaying a SIFE approved name badge at all
times. Specifics on obtaining name badges will be communicated
to teams prior to all SIFE events.
Regional Competition Expenses
All expenses, with the exception of any meals provided by SIFE, are
the responsibility of the individual SIFE team.
It is the responsibility of each SIFE team to make room
reservations for the Regional Competition it will attend. When
calling to book rooms, teams should request the SIFE room block
and the SIFE rate.
Reservations must be made 4-6 weeks in advance of the
competition date to ensure receipt of the SIFE rate. Room blocks
are automatically released by the hotel after that time.

Competition Requirement
Teams selected as Regional Champions are required to compete
at the SIFE USA National Exposition or forfeit their $1,000 cash
award. In the event of forfeit, the team does retain its title and
trophy.
In the event that a SIFE USA Regional Champion team is unable
to fulfill this competition requirement, the 1st Runner-up team
from its Regional Competition league will be invited to compete in
its place at the SIFE USA National Exposition. If the 1st Runner-
up team is also unable to attend, the 2nd Runner-up team from
the same Regional Competition league will be invited.
Competition Pairing Process
There will be a minimum of five teams per league. Historically,
the number of teams named as SIFE Regional Champions
advancing to the SIFE USA National Exposition has been
determined using the formula on page 15. Any changes to this
process will be announced during the spring semester.
The teams are placed into competition groups using a
computerized pairing process. This program takes into account
each team’s competition performance from the previous year. First
year “rookie” teams will be evenly distributed among the leagues.
The computer program will randomly assign presentation times.
No-Show Policy
In the even that a SIFE team does not show up to compete at
the regional competition they have registered to compete at and
has not informed the SIFE USA Campus Program Department of
their decision to not compete, the team will be subjected to the
following penalties:
1. First offense – Warning
2. Second offense – Ineligible to compete for one year and a letter
will be sent to the team’s institution informing them of the
offense.
In the event the team is unable to compete due to extenuating
circumstances, the team should call the SIFE USA Campus
Program Department as soon as possible to inform them of the
situation.

by another SIFE team or that your SIFE team was treated unfairly,

participants and/or individuals witness to the violation.
On-site Complaint Filing Process:
Contact the Regional Vice President, SIFE USA Programs to report
the violation. In the event the Regional Vice President, SIFE USA
Programs is not on site, contact the most senior member of the
SIFE USA Staff in attendance.
On-site Complaint Handling Process:
Complaints submitted on-site will be reviewed by the Regional
Vice President, SIFE USA Programs or the most senior member of
the SIFE USA Staff on site in consultation with the Regional Vice
President, SIFE USA Programs.
Upon review of the complaint, if the violation can be resolved in a
timely matter at the Regional Competition, the individual(s) filing
the on-site complaint will receive a verbal ruling by the Regional
Vice President, SIFE USA Programs or the most senior member of
the SIFE USA Staff in attendance at the event.
If the violation can not be resolved in a timely matter at the
Regional Competition, or if you disagree with the outcome of the
immediate addressing of the suspected violation, you and/or your
SIFE team may appeal the decision to the SIFE Rules Committee.
All appeals must be submitted within 30 days of the suspected
violation.

Each team will be evaluated on the following (1100 character

Time Frame for Project
The project submitted for this Topic Competition may be
completed any time during the academic year. SIFE encourages
teams to use the name of the sponsoring company when
conducting their project for this Topic Competition. When
applicable, SIFE teams are encouraged to work in partnership
with their local Waste Management representatives in the
implementation of their project.

All active SIFE teams are eligible to enter and must compete at a
2010 SIFE USA Regional Competition to win. Failure to compete
will result in forfeiture of the award and prize money.
How to Enter
Teams entering the Waste Management Environmental
Sustainability Competition are required to submit an online entry
form describing the educational project conducted that met this
criteria.
Online entries will be judged prior to the SIFE USA Regional
Competitions by a group of representatives from Waste
Management. Finalists will be announced at the SIFE USA
Regional Competitions. The top three teams will be recognized
during the SIFE USA National Exposition.

3. Complete a minimum of 100 hours of service through

Jules and Gwen Knapp SIFE Ambassador Scholarship
Purpose
To recognize the leadership, teamwork and communication skills
developed in SIFE students.
Award
The recipient of the scholarship will receive a $10,000 scholarship
to be used for educational purposes at the college or university he/
she is attending on a full-time basis. The recipient will be recognized
as the Knapp SIFE Ambassador for the year in which they receive the
scholarship. As the Knapp SIFE Ambassador the recipient will receive
training from SIFE USA and may be asked by SIFE to represent the
organization on campuses and/or at events throughout the academic year.
Possible Additional Awards
Two additional $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to eligible students.
Students receiving additional scholarships will be named a Knapp SIFE
Student Leader for one year and may be asked by SIFE to represent the
organization on campuses and/or at events throughout the academic year.
Qualifications
Applicants must:
1. Be enrolled at a four-year college or university.
2. Be a registered SIFE team member who competes at a SIFE
USA Regional Competition during the year of application and
the year the award is to be paid.
3. Be a SIFE Service Leadership Award recipient during the
year of application.
4. Continue on the SIFE team at the same school and earn the SIFE

5. Be a sophomore or junior at the time of selection in order to

(RILA), the recipient of this award will receive a $5,000 scholarship

the opportunity to attend and be recognized at the annual RILA
conference in 2010.*

Qualifications
Applicants must:
1. Be a registered member of a SIFE team that competes at a SIFE

3. Be a full-time student with at least a junior standing and have
completed at least 60 credits at the beginning of the upcoming
academic year.
4. Be enrolled in an accredited college or university offering a retail-
oriented curriculum.
5. Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent.
6. Continue in school full-time during the academic year for which
the award is made and continue in school without interruption,
barring leaving the college/university due to illness, emergency, or
military service.

Purpose
To recognize the achievement of one outstanding SIFE
Alumnus/Alumna who has used his/her SIFE experience to excel in
life and in his/her chosen career and who has continued to make
a difference in the lives of others.
Nomination
The nomination process can be initiated by anyone actively
involved with SIFE, including the nominee. The nomination must
be submitted online and include only the following items:
1. A cover page including the name of the award, the college/
university name and the name of the nominee.
2. A nomination letter from a fellow SIFE Alumni Network member,
Sam Walton Fellow or SIFE donor. If the nominee is a Sam
Walton Fellow, the nomination may come from the dean or
college president of the campus on which he/she is an active
Sam Walton Fellow, or from the college/university at which he/
she was an active SIFE team member. The letter should state
the reasons the nominee deserves the award and how he/she fits
the criteria upon which the award is based.

To ensure SIFE teams competing at a USA Regional Competition have quality programs to present, SIFE has created a set of quality
standards that must be met for the SIFE team to be eligible to compete. Once a SIFE team has met all standards they must complete
the 2010 SIFE USA Regional Competition Application. The deadline to complete the application is January 25, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. CST.
SIFE USA will review all applications to determine if the SIFE teams have met the standards and will notify all teams via their Sam
Walton Fellow by February 8, 2010 of their status.

SIFE USA Regional Competition standards that must be met for a SIFE team to be eligible to compete:
1. Have a minimum of 10 active SIFE student members
2. All SIFE student members must be individually registered at www.sife.org
3. Each SIFE team must have completed and be able to show results on at least 3 educational outreach projects that fit the SIFE
judging criteria by the Regional Competition (refer to page 8 of this guide for the SIFE judging criteria)

Completing the Team Data Sheet
The SIFE Team Data Sheet helps us keep track and report
on the progress of our SIFE teams around the world. Please
complete the form online at www.sife.org before attending a
SIFE Regional Competition. If not competing, submit this report
by April 1 annually. Please contact the SIFE USA Program
Department with any questions.
Below are some definitions and instructions to assist you in
completing the data sheet:
Number of Active Team Members
An active team member is defined as a SIFE student who
has registered on the SIFE website, contributes 10 hours of
service to SIFE, and participates in SIFE team projects or in the
efforts contributing to the furthering of the team any time from
September 1, 2009 through August 31, 2010.
Number of Projects
Count the total number of projects your team completed
during the academic year and place that number in the total
column. Next, classify each one of those projects into one of the
six educational topic categories. Categorize each project by which
of the six educational topics it most closely fits. If a project meets
more than one criteria the sum of the six topics will not equal the
number in the total column.
Please keep in mind that if a team develops a single project,
regardless of how many times it presents it, it only counts as
one project.
Hours of Team Involvement
Count the total number of hours your team spent directly
impacting others through SIFE projects and place that number in
the total column. After completing the total column, use the six
educational topics to classify how your team spent its time. If a
project meets more than one criteria the sum of the hours in the
six topics will not equal the number in the total column.
Number of BAB Members Involved
Count the total number of Business Advisory Board
members that assisted in the planning or execution of your SIFE
projects during the current year and place that number in the
total column. After completing the total column, use the six
educational topics to classify how the BAB members were most
utilized. If a project meets more than one criteria the sum of the
six topics does not necessarily have to equal the number in the
total column due to overlap.

Directly Impacted
Count the number of 5-18 year olds directly impacted by your
projects. After completing the total column, use the six educational
topics to classify how these students were most impacted. If a
project meets more than one criteria the sum of the students in each

Count the number of college students directly impacted by your
projects. After completing the total column, use the six educational

Document only the number of actual campus/local/regional/
national radio news stories that featured a project conducted by

 Annual Report Project Verification Form

Every team must submit a completed Project Verification Form in order to compete at a SIF EUSA Regional and National Competition.
This form must be signed by the team’s Sam Walton Fellow, one student and one other administrator (dean, department chair or
institution president). If a team’s faculty advisor is also an administrator, the form must be signed by another administrator. The
Project Verification Form serves as an internal audit of projects and activities at all levels of SIFE competition: regional, national,
and at the SIFE World Cup. Failure to submit this form may result in a team not being eligible to compete.

Working with SIFE USA to complete a W-9 form
SIFE Auditor Requirements:
SIFE must be able to officially legitimize each payee regardless
of the payment or taxable status of the vendor/payment. To
satisfy this requirement, a completed W-9 must be on file for
every vendor prior to payment.
Purpose of the W-9:
Form W-9 (Rev. 10-2007) “A person who is required to file
an information return with the IRS must obtain your correct
taxpayer identification number (TIN) to report, for example,
income paid to you…”
W-9 is used for all U.S. persons (including resident aliens), to
provide your correct TIN to the person requesting the information.

• Name as shown on your income tax return (typically used for
sole proprietors or individuals)
• Business name (if different from above-typically used for the
team/school)
• Taxable Status must be provided: Please check one box and
indicate if your federal income taxable status is exempt or not.
Do not be vague. If there is a question about your exemption
status or not, it will delay processing.
• Current vendor address
• Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number.
We only need one or the other per vendor. Make sure
it is the applicable number for the vendor listed on the
W-9. For example: Individuals=Social Security Number,
School=Employer Identification Number, team=federal ID or
school federal ID.
• Signature-Required for the vendor. If you are signing for your
school, be sure you have verified the Employer Identification
Number is correct. This is the official certification that the
number is correct.

by contacting SIFE USA Programs or Accounting Departments at
1-800-235-9585.
