Elusive gold

Filipinos are indeed the best!

However, every Olympics we always find it hard at
getting even one gold medal. The streak shown by outstanding
athletes such Pacman, Paeng Nepomoceno, Efren Bata, and
among others who have proved to the world Filipinos prowess
in sports is easily trampled in the Olympics game.

But to whom do we put the blame? To the athlete?

To the coaches and trainers? Or the salient clich of pointing the

fault to the government?

Laying the issue on the table, the blames would fall
to many factors. Basically, we have the government. It being the
supreme organization of the country, it has all the power to fund
materials, equipments, provide trainings and workshops to our
athletes. However, in years passed, these are not the usual case.
Our athletes, who are delegates to the Olympics, satisfy themselves with the scanty materials, equipments, and funding given
by the government. In return, can we really expect tremendous
heights of success to be given in return?

On the other side, the blame does not fall solely to
our government. We also have other agencies and private organizations, who in one way or another, will bring support to
our athletes in materials and funding. But we lack empowerment. Perhaps, we need to re-establish our ties between the
government and its people if we truly dream to get at least one
gold in the Olympics.

In history, by far, it was back 1996 when our coun-

try was able to snatch a silver medal in the Olympics. It was

the win of Mansueto Velasco in boxing in the Olympics held
at Atlanta. One might add the success of the two bronze medals won in 9th World Wushu Championship during the Beijing
Olympics in China. But it was said that the event was not a part
of the Olympics official game. It was solely an exhibition.

Through and through, we do not want to bring
home nothing every Olympics. Yet, there will still be many
Olympics in the years to come. Do we not want to get hold of
even one gold medal? For sure, the pride will not only be carried
by the winner themselves but it will reverberate straightly to the
Filipino hearts.

Thus, the government and other agencies may it
be public and private should give full support, from materials,
equipments, and funding, to our delegates. And the rest of us,
should at least contribute with pride to our athletes we must
have faith and believe to Pinoys pro in sports. Just simply like
how we stop our world every time Pacman has his game. The
same energy must we imply and put to our Olympic delegates.
