REFLECTION from Byrnsie

THE PARISH AS FAMILY
37 years ago Lauranne and I came to be married in the Tuncurry Catholic Church.
Lauranne was an American Schoolteacher on a two year contract in Australia with
no family here. I was newly settled in Forster and my family were all in Sydney, a
good 5 hours drive away.

I was unemployed and we had very little money. In the absence of geographically
close family for support the Parish community became our family.
The Parish Community organised the Wedding Ceremony, decorated the Parish Hall
for the Reception, supplied the food, baked and decorated the Wedding Cake and
even organised the honeymoon accommodation. The day was truly a wonderful
community event as Lauranne and I committed ourselves to each other in the
presence of and witnessed by a loving, supportive community.
Over the years as our family grew with seven children the Parish community
continued that support by supplying baby sitters, Godparents and honorary Aunts
and Uncles. The Parish Village helped us raise and form our children through our
involvement in Church camping expeditions, Parish Dinners and other assorted
social functions.
As the years rolled by our children have left town for University education and
employment and Lauranne and I have become Darby & Jane and begun the journey
toward senior citizenship. The onset of poor health issues have again made us
aware of the need for close knit community in the absence of geographically close
family members.
Once again, the Parish Community has become our defacto family. Once again our
loving community has provided the support that cannot be provided by actual
family members because of distance and their own commitments. Once again
people have gone beyond the boundary of simple friendships to duties normally
restricted to family.
And once again Lauranne and I have come to value those relationships and the
loving care and concern offered by them and to be forever grateful for the gift of
friendship. The Parish community has truly become our family.

Recommendations from the Study into the Provision of Secondary
Education
In 2013, the Catholic Schools Office began a Study, commissioned by Bishop
Bill Wright, into the Provision of Secondary Education to ensure the diocese
would be able to meet the future needs of students in Catholic secondary
schools.
As a result of this study, 12 recommendations made by the study have been
accepted by Bishop Bill Wright for implementation.
The closest information session will be on Monday 10th August, 7pm, hosted
by St Michaels, Nelson Bay.
You can also find out more information regarding the study and 12
recommendations by visiting www.mn.catholic.edu.au/study`

When the apostles were trying to reflect on

their ministry, Jesus asked them to come by
yourselves to an out-of-the-way place.
Listening to God in quite prayer is very
important in vocational discernment. Listen
to Gods voice in an out-of-the-way place.
