Police investigate
multiple gym thefts

Future firefighter

Four victims in a period

of 10 days report valuables stolen
from lockers at LA Fitness
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Residents who visit LA Fitness
on Dearborn Circle in Mt. Laurel
would be well advised to lock up
their belongings after a series of
theft reports this month.
Mt. Laurel Police have received
four theft reports from the mens
locker room of the LA Fitness in
a span of 10 days from July 2
through July 12. The thefts have
included items such as wallets,
cash, credit cards, cell phones and
keys.
Lt. Stephen Riedener of the Mt.
Laurel Police Department said
the police have received seven
total reports of theft from LA Fitness.
Weve had seven thefts
there this year, he said. Two
were cars that were broken into
and the other five were unsecured
lockers that were broken into.
The nature of the crimes
varies. In most of the cases, the
victims left the items while they
worked out at the gym. They didnt notice the items were missing

until they returned.

In two cases, victims had valuables stolen from outside the
gym. In a report on July 4, a victims car keys were stolen from a
locker. The suspect used the keys
to enter the victims car, move it
to another area of the parking lot,
and steal a wallet, cell phone and
cash.
One thing all of the reports
have in common is all of the victims lockers were unsecured.
Riedener said gyms are common
targets for thieves since visitors
dont carry valuables with them
when they are working out.
Theyre certainly going to try
unsecured lockers first before
going after secured ones, Riedener said.
In all of the reports from July,
the victims left their lockers unsecured. Riedener said crimes
such as the recent thefts are easier to prevent when gym patrons
bring a lock to secure their
items.
If you lock your car and you
please see POLICE, page 11

ts hard to believe, but just last

week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of

Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to

questions for school leaders about the

new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can

pass along to you.

Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about repairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still providing great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership between schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relationship starts with effective communication.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.

Lenape district drives home another win

District wins U Got Brains competition with its Heads Up, Eyes Forward campaign
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The Lenape Regional High School District has built a dynasty when it comes to
teaching the community about safe driving.
For the third consecutive year and the
fourth time in five years, the school district
was one of three grand prize winners in
the U Got Brains Champion Schools Competition. In the competition, schools from

across New Jersey create campaigns to

promote safe driving. The team was honored for its achievements at last Wednesdays LRHSD board of education meeting.
Lenape District Television students participate in the contest annually. Every year,
the team is challenged to create a video of
10 minutes or less showing how it promoted safe driving in their school and local
communities.
John Donaldson, director of television
services for the school district, said the

challenging part of winning three years in

a row is coming up with new ideas to stay
ahead of the competition. There were 59
teams participating in this years competition, and Donaldson said other schools emulate or take ideas from what Lenape has
done in the past.
We know theyre gunning for us, he
said. So every year we put a little more effort in it.

(609) 654-9485

When it began competing in

the competition, LDTV created
the Heads Up, Eyes Forward
campaign. The campaign warns
motorists against the various
dangers of distracted driving.
Last school year, the team created t-shirts to distribute to students and staff. The front of the tshirts included the Heads Up,
Eyes Forward logo on the front
and a few examples of distracted
driving on the back.
The team also created magnets
with the campaign logo to distribute to students. The students
signed a pledge against distracted
driving and then received a mag-

net for their car. Students who

had the magnets on their car had
the chance to win a Student
Parking Space of the Month.
For winning the competition,
the school district receives a driving simulator, a computer program complete with a seat, steering wheel and pedals that are
used in drivers education classes.
With the Lenape district winning
for a fourth time, all four high
schools now have one driving
simulator.
Well donate this one to
Seneca, so now well have one at
each of the four schools, Donaldson said.
The Lenape district does not
plan to see its streak of wins at U
Got Brains end at three. Donaldson said the LDTV students are
already brainstorming new ideas
to promote its Heads Up, Eyes

Forward campaign in new ways

again next year.

Lenape students prepared

to succeed again
Last year, the school district debuted a Prepared to Succeed
video, where graduates from the
four high schools talked about
how the Lenape Regional high
schools best prepared them for
college. The school district released its second Prepared to Succeed video earlier this month.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said the video allows the
community to hear about the positive aspects of the school district
directly from the students.
They really talk about the success and excitement they experienced at our schools, she
said.
