1. Introduction
Nepal Doorsanchar Company limited commonly known as Nepal telecom is the leading and largest
telecommunication company of Nepal. Nepal Telecommunications Corporation was former government
corporation. It was converted to a public limited company on April 14, 2004 and registered under the
companies act 2053.
In Nepal, operating any form of telecommunication service dates back to 94 years in B.S. 1970. But
formally telecom service was provided mainly after the establishment of MOHAN AKASHWANI in
B.S. 2005.Later as per the plan formulated in First National Five year plan (2012-2017);
Telecommunication Department was established in B.S.2016. To modernize the telecommunications
services and to expand the services, during third five-year plan (2023-2028), Telecommunication
Department was converted into Telecommunications Development Board in B.S.2026. After the
enactment of Communications Corporation Act 2028, it was formally established as fully owned
Government Corporation called Nepal Telecommunications Corporation in B.S. 2032 for the purpose of
providing telecommunications services to Nepalese People. After serving the nation for 29 years with
great pride and a sense of accomplishment, Nepal Telecommunication Corporation was transformed into
Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited from Baisakh 1, 2061. Nepal Doorsanchar company Limited is a
company registered under the companies Act 2053. However the company is known to the general
public by the brand name Nepal Telecom as registered trademark.
Definitely Nepal Telecom's widespread reach will assist in the socio-economic development of the urban
as well as rural areas, as telecommunications is one of the most important infrastructures required for
development. Accordingly in the era of globalization, it is felt that milestones and achievements of the
past are not adequate enough to catch up with the global trend in the development of telecommunication
sector and the growth of telecommunication services in the country will be guided by Technology,
Declining equipment prices, market growth due to increase in standard of life and finally by healthy
competition.
Nepal Telecom has always put its endeavors in providing its valued customers a quality service since its
inception. To achieve this goal, technologies best meeting the interest of its customers has always been
selected. The nationwide reach of the organization, from urban areas to the economically non- viable
most remote locations, is the result of all these efforts that makes this organization different from others.
In the current scenario, currently there are 5 telecommunication service providers in Nepal. Despite the
competition, the company has been able to expand its footprint of the traditional landline, GSM &
CDMA mobiles and VSATs for geographically challenging terrains throughout the country.according to
the census done ending on ashadh 2071,the company has 1,09,04,462 customers and employs around
6300 employees.

3. Information systems of Nepal Telecom


Nepal telecom has used various information systems in the organization.there are five types of
information systems used in the organization. The wireless system contains GSm mobile sytem and
CDMA system.the wireline system consists of PSTN system and ADSS projects.the third one that is
Transmission System consists of IP based transmission Network. The fourth one is Billing System which
contains Convergent real time billing and customer support systems. The data systems consists of wimax
system, international gateway system, customer care system and other systems.they are explained as
follows :

3.1 Wireless Systems


3.1.1 GSM mobile System
In the Wireless System, Nepal Telecom has already purchased new IP-based GSM system of 10
Million lines capacity in two Packages: Package-A of 5.2M line capacity for CDR, EDR, MWDR and FWDR
(except KTM Valley), and Package-B of 4.8M line capacity for Kathmandu Valley and WDR. The equipment
under Package-B has already been installed whereas the equipment under Package-A is in the process of
delivery.
Nepal Telecom has already installed and commissioned three (3) Mobile BTS Vehicles inside Kathmandu
Valley. These have been used successfully in the Pashupati Nath Temple premise during Shivaratri and Teej
festivals, at Shalinadi during Swasthani Purnima festival, at Dasharath Stadium during football matches and in
Tundikhel.
3.1.2 CDMA System
Nepal Telecom has recently replaced its existing CDMA system by IP-CDMA system of 2 Million line
capacity along with commercialization of EVDO service. This broadband EVDO service will be extended to all
urban and peri-urban areas throughout the country in near future.

3.2 Wireline Systems


3.2.1 PSTN System
In the Wire-line system, Nepal Telecom plans to replace its existing 700K TDM based Switching
systems by IP-based Wire-line (NGN based) systems and provide Triple Play (Voice, Data & Video) Services to
its customers. The IP-based Wire line system which Nepal Telecom procured previously has been recently put
into operation.
3.2.2 ADSS Project
Nepal Telecom (NT) signed a contract with Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) on January 2012 for the
operation of its ADSS (All Di-electric Self Supporting) Optical Fiber Cable Project. Mr. Bhagat Man Singh
Pradhan, Deputy Managing Director (Operations and Maintenance) of NT and Mr. Chiranjeebi Sharma, General
Manager (Transmission and System Department) of NEA had signed the contract of this Project.
Under the project, NT will be using 277 Kilometers of NEA's transmission line infrastructure to expand its
optical fiber cable network as per the directives of the Government of Nepal to expand optical fiber cable

network in all 75 districts of the country. This initiative is expected to provide reliable telecommunication
service and to build an alternative route for information highway. On completion of the total project, Nepal
Telecom will be able to expand additional 2,700 Kms ADSS Optical Fiber cable throughout the country.

3.3 Transmission System


Nepal Telecom has already installed and partially commissioned its IP-based transmission network
that consists of DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) routers and switches. This IP-based
transmission network spans from Birtamod in the East to Dhangadi in the West of the country and it shall cater
to the transmission network demand for 2M lines IP-CDMA project, 10 M lines GSM project, IP-based wire
line (NGN) project and broadband internet service.
There is provision for centrally monitoring this DWDM network from Network Management
Centers (NMCs) located in Kathmandu and Itahari (eastern part of the country).

3.4 Billing System


3.4.1 Convergent Real Time Billing and Customer Support (CRTB & CS) System
Nepal Telecom has already procured Convergent Real Time Billing and Customer Support
(CRTB & CS) System to facilitate its customers with one window billing system for all services. Integration of
billing system of its new IP-CDMA system has been completed, and integration of billing systems of the new
IP-based GSM and the NGN system will be undertaken in near future. In addition, the CRTB & CS project will
enable NT customers to enjoy benefits of multiple discount offers and attractive bundling schemes.

3.5 Data System


3.5.1 WiMAX System
Nepal Telecom has recently launched WiMAX service based on 4G technology. This service is
available to corporate as well as individual customers in more than 40 districts, and the subscribers are allowed
to enjoy this service in any area throughout the country where this service has coverage. Besides, Nepal
Telecom has plans to establish 500 Wi-Fi hotspots in the major areas of the country under its WiMAX project.
3.5.2 International Gateway System
Nepal Telecom has recently deployed IP-based International Gateways in Sundhara and Butwol
to enhance its international connectivity.

3.5.3 Customer Care Service


3.5.3.1 Customer Contact Center (CCC)
Nepal Telecom has already procured equipment for Next Generation Customer Contact Center
(CCC) to address and manage queries and complaints of its customers. With this service, NT customers will be
able to avail information about its services and also lodge complaints via telephone, e-mail, SMS, Chat, Instant
Messaging, Fax and even via social networking sites. At present, the project work of CCC system is ongoing,
and after completion, this platform will be able to host similar services to other interested organizations.

3.5.4 Other Systems


3.5.4.1 Unified Communication Service (UCS)
Nepal Telecom has procured Unified Communication Service (UCS) System to provide Social Networking
platform to its customers. At present, this project is in the implementation phase.
3.5.4.2 Service Delivery Platform (SDP)
Nepal Telecom has plans to purchase Service Delivery Platform (SDP) to integrate its different existing and
future Value Added Services (VAS) in a single platform.
3.5.4.3 Network Operation Center (NOC)
Nepal Telecom is planning to establish a centralized Network Operation Center (NOC) in near future for quick
fault localization and monitoring of its systems that are working on different networks.
3.5.4.4 Data Center
Establishing a next generation data center for Nepal Telecom's in-house use as well as for hosting services is in
its plan.
