A. I should be awarded the position of cymbal line section leader because I am

heavily invested in the cymbal section. As one of the older members of the
section I have always contributed to writing exercises and parts for the cymbal
section when they were not previously provided. Additionally, I have been a
member of the cymbal line since its inception and before I was a primary
marcher making me one of the more experienced marchers in the section. I
feel that there is no one else that has the same enthusiasm that I do for
playing the cymbals.
B. This concert season I consistently held myself accountable to be on top of the
music that the band was playing and the scales and other technical studies
assigned in order to build my personal skill as a player. I always committed
myself to focusing to the utmost of my ability during rehearsals. As a result of
this I was constantly able to adjust myself in order to be aware of balance
within my section and within the entire band. Additionally, I made sure to set
time aside after rehearsal if there was an issue within the section that needed
to be addressed such as odd tuning. However, I understand that these
contributions were mostly on the individual level and while they do contribute
to the betterment of my section and the band they do not go beyond the
surface level of what all band students are called to do. Therefore in the future
I plan to involve myself more with the other member(s) of my section in order
to ensure that we are on the same page in terms of dynamic levels and to
consistently tune with the other member(s) of my section in order to improve
the bands overall balance and quality of sound.
C. I will bring my unique sense of optimism and my love of people to the
leadership team. I am never satisfied in life if I am not helping others. I aid
others with consistently kind words and actions. Through my own optimism, I
encourage others to also be positive.

E. If I was given the opportunity to guide a student who was considering quitting
band due to issues with the amount of time that it consumes, I would invite
that person out to lunch with me or find some other time in which there would
be enough time to have a long conversation. Then I would ask them why they
were considering quitting and all of the factors that were going into that
decision. I would go on to tell them the story of my sophomore year where I

did two sports, one in school and one outside of school, took several advanced
classes and participated successfully in band. I would explain that ultimately it
is not band that is the issue in terms of time constraints but poor time
management skills. If they were taking some of the same subjects that I was
or subjects I had previously taken for the next year. i would give them my
number so that they could call or text me if they were having any difficulty
with a lesson or assignment. I would stress the importance of doing
assignments before they were due and consistently keeping track of
deadlines. I would conclude the conversation by reminding them of all the
fantastic experiences we have in band and sharing a few of my most
memorable moments from band. Ultimately. I would say that it was their
decision whether or not to continue band but I would emphasize that band is
extremely enjoyable and prepares you for the rest of your life.
F. Last year the leadership team did an extremely good job at paying attention to
detail and addressing all of the issues that came up over the course of the
week and the season as a whole. Whenever any section had a problem that
they felt was important everyone gave them their undivided attention and
discussed what should be done. However, the leadership team did have a
tendency to become heated when people disagreed or felt that another
section was lacking. Next year I intend to always contribute positively and
calmly in the leadership team setting and hope that others will follow my lead
so that decisions can be made efficiently and the overall satisfaction within
the leadership team will remain constant.
