Challenging creativity
to make a change

New Global
Design Challenges
Platform

Dialog on
creativity between
East and West

Spirit of East inspired and liberated Western

minds in last decades. It is a time now for awakened and mindful creativity to support the occurring change rising on East.

Our challenges work as a sort of dialogue, helping

people communicate through design without
language barriers. All challenges are based on real
projects and tailored to match clients needs, and
each one is a story of its own.

China is marking the XXI century, leading the

Asia with a fast development and technological
breakthrough. This unstoppable process is leaving
global effects, and only Creativity has a power to
change this course. Design is today, more than
ever before, a fuel of business success and genuine development. Designers became influencers
with a responsibility to shape the future.
We are opening Chinese market for Western
creativity, believing that only through fusion of
cultures global change will occur. M O R P H is a
spirit of this change, guiding towards more environmental friendly and sustainable future.

PROJECT CONTEXT

BEIJING
1+1 Freeport Art Centre is expanding its business
scope in following months, accordingly, it demands
specific spatial and functional interventions inside
its space.
The aim of this design challenge to create a
contemporary high-end conceptual showroom for
showcasing and sales of collectible artworks and
design objects. It will hold a unique collection in
China that consist of handmade and limited edition
objects of extraordinary artistic value.
1+1 Freeport Art Centre contains a couple of
connected exhibition zones, with two main ones
that are called big gallery and small gallery. The
main function of the overall space is supposed to
stay unchanged to be able to host exhibitions
and events of different kind. The challenge is how
to integrate a new function into existing space
without compromising its exhibition capacities and
spatial flexibility.

PROJECT BRIEF

#1 SHOWROOM
The small gallery will transform to a new
showroom where collectible artworks and
objects will be showcased and purchased,
while maintaining its ability to host
exhibitions.

#2 LOUNGE

The current lobby will become a

multi-functional temporary lounge, that
is introducing the showroom, and where
guests of the center can relax and discuss.

#3 FREEPORT GATE

#4 EXISTING VIP ROOM

*The security rooms door

should be covered permanently, without preventing its daily use.

A new gate will be installed that responses

to a new identity of 1+1 Freeport Art
Centre.

This room will be used as VIP private

reception room when needed, and should
function as a whole with a lounge.

*This wall should be able

to join the main exhibition
if necessary

#5 STORAGE

#1 SHOWROOM

#2 LOUNGE
The central focus of the project is a Showroom that
will showcase a variety of artworks and design objects
and host different type of activities. It is important
that this space preserves connection with the rest of
the exhibition spaces so they can function as a whole
when necessary.

A temporary Lounge will be installed in the lobby of

1+1 Freeport Art Centre when needed, depending on
the main events happening inside the centre. Usually
the lobby is used only for opening and closing events
of main exhibitions, so everything that is happening
there has a temporary character.

1+1 Showroom must have capacity to showcase

objects of different kind and scale. Small objects like
jewellery should be treated with the same importance
as bigger ones. There should be distinct showcasing
zones for different types of objects, but it is not
necessary if justified. Objects include:

The purpose of temporary Lounge is to extend a

Showroom into more comfortable space with daylight, where clients can relax and discuss about an
object of interest with 1+1 sales stuff. Together with
the VIP room which is located between the lobby and
the Showroom, it is forming a quiet zone for more
private discussions and meetings, where, depending
on occasion, cocktail or catering can be served.

Artworks (sculpture & paintings)

Applied art objects
Jewellery
Furniture (variety of sizes and types)
Books

This zone is also supposed to showcase some of the

most interesting objects from Showroom, enriching
the ambient with their beauty and introducing the
whole collection to clients. It should function as an
attractive unique introduction of the Showroom, also
as an extension that shares the same identity as the
Showroom.

This space will host diverse activities and should

possess a certain level of transformability according
to different situations. It is important that spatial
transformations can be rearranged with simple manipulation.
1+1 Showroom will host listed events, and often a
combination of them:

* photos should be cosidered only as a mood/material references,

and must not limit the design anyhow

10

Lectures
Workshops
Projections
Exhibitions
Private showcasing

* photos should be cosidered only as a mood/material references, and must not limit the design anyhow

All interventions should be temporary and easy to

transform/move.
Design objectives are:
- Comfortable seating for relaxation and discussion
of small groups and individuals
- Showcasing of selected objects
- Dedicated place for catering/cocktail
- Visual connection to Showroom (signage, print,
detailing,..)
- Security door cover
11

#3 ENTRANCE
With this intervention 1+1 Freeport Art Centre aims
to insert a fresh identity into its Dongsishitiao space
and to promote its status of a first Art & Luxury
Freeport in downtown Beijing. This gate should be a
symbol of a free cross-cultural exchange and everything 1+1 represents with its China + West approach.
Entrance provides first and most important impression to guests, so it should introduce a new identity
that this project is bringing. It should also be able
to reflect the program of 1+1 Freeport Art Centre,
featuring exhibitions and events.
This Gate should be, in a way, a window to the world
of 1+1 Freeport Art Centre.
Design requirements:

* photos should be cosidered only as a mood/material references, and must not limit the design anyhow

12

Two separate entrances

Ability to bring in large scale objects (eg. cars,..)
Place for a sculpture / installation
Program/Promo surface..

#4 EXISTING VIP ROOM

#5 STORAGE

The existing VIP rooms current interior arrangement

should not be changed, but its glass windows could be
considered as part of the lounge, transformable without breaking the unity of the space. VIP room already
has ajustable roller shutters for gaining a certain level
of privacy.

The storage room is a narrow space with its door

opening next to the entrance of the showroom. The
design must consider its capacity as this space will
be used as storage for all new temporary elements
included in design.

13

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Spacial
Organization
& Circulation
It is important that 1+1 Showroom and events that
are the part of the main program of 1+1 Freeport Art
Centre can cohabitate in a same space and still keep
distinct identities and integrity. In some occasions,
all exhibition space of the center will be used for main
exhibitions, which should not prevent Showroom from
functioning.
Another issue is the relationship between the Salon
and the Showroom. As the showroom is deep inside
the center, it must have clear circulation and visual
connection to the entrance zone so that guests can
orient with ease.

14

Cultural
References

Flexibility
& Storage

Atmosphere
& Materials

The design should consider cultural references to

create a fusion between the West and the East and
harmonically bring mixed elements to the space. The
interpretation of these references should be contemporary, and it can reflected on the spacial arrangement, furniture design or the materials used.

As the whole project is in a way considered to be of a

temporary character, this should be a starting point for
any design. All designed elements must have possibility to move around a space and to be able to fit the
storage capacities.

Considering the fact that Showroom is located deeply

inside the center, it is very important to pay close
attentions to lighting and atmospheric effects in this
space. As there is no daylight and no windows, it is
desirable that newly designed space has a comfortable
atmosphere that will make visitors spend more time
there while feeling cozy. Any kind of floor/wall/ceiling
treatment is welcome, if it serves the purpose.

Inside the showroom space there is a technical wall

which is rarely used for exhibitions as it is full of
opening (doors, fire equipment,..). It is suggested that
main design focus is on this wall as it is a dead surface
that could be used in many ways. If designers decide to
cover the wall, it is important that doors and opening
are left accessible if necessary.
All designed elements must be able to fit dedicated
storage space capacity.
It is not necessary but an advantage, that the showcasing elements have their own storage capacities,
especially for jewelry and smaller objects.

1+1 Showroom is a very profiled kind of store that

will showcase only exclusive items mostly targeting
high-end clients. Its permanent exhibitions will consist
of carefully selected unique, collectible and expensive
objects gathered around the world.
Selection of materials used in the design proposal and
surface finishing must correspond to the value and
rarity of the exhibiting collection. Overall look needs
to carry a feeling of exclusiveness and emphasise the
artistic value of showcasing objects, but also keep the
atmosphere relaxed and warm.
