Description:
A project in which the students were to design a color full-bleed advertisement for an event
that would raise funds for an organization using only Microsoft Word and scanned images.

Date:
May 16th, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 3 Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word & Scanner

Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing. Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed
design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including
Photoshop.

Process:
First, I drew sketches of what I would like my flier to
look like, and I considered the message and audience
that I wanted to reach. After making sketches, I
proceeded to scan all of the images I wanted to use
in my flier. To do this, I visited room 107 in the
Spori and scanned using the computer that was
connected to one of the two scanners available.
Then I opened word and, using my favorite
sketch, designed my project. I then met
with peers to get input on my draft.
During my critique session I learned
very valuable information and got good
tips for improvement. Overall, it was a
productive cri- tique. Finally, I made the
final changes to my project and printed
it for submission.

Description:
A project designed to help develop basic photography, photo editing and photo design skills.

Date:
May 23rd, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 3 Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Professional camera & Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive
editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout. Use layers to design text, and
repeating graphic elements in Photoshop. Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all
four sides.

Process:
First, I thought of what type of message I wanted to portray with my photo. After deciding on
my message, I chose my color scheme, that way
when I took my photo I knew what colors to bring
out. I chose a few things in my area that I would
like to photograph and then I took pictures of
these subjects at different angles. I proceeded to
select my favorite image, and then made
sketches of what I would like my design
to look like. I then took my image to
Photoshop and created my design.
Then, I met with my peers to get some
feedback on my design. After getting the
feedback, I used it to review my design
and improve it. Finally, I saved and
printed my project, and created my
blog post.

Description:
A webpage created to exemplify basic html knowledge and design skills

Date:
June 27th, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 3 Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Text Wrangler HTML and CSS editing software

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. Identify
hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker. Open the HTML page in a web browser
and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.

Process:
First, I prepared my logo for the webpage. Then I
decided which colors would look best on my
webpage. Using the hex color picker, I determined
the codes for the colors I would apply to my
webpage. I then proceeded to type all of the
neccesary body copy for the assignment
and chose fonts that fit well with my
design, yet were reliable for viewing on
any computer. Finally, I took a screenshot
of what my final webpage looked like.

Description:
A project designed to teach the student how to combine and incorporate everything they have
learned in the semester into one design in brochure form.

Date:
July 11th, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 3 Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Indesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and use it in a
brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including

the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for a full bleed
and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:
First I decided what would be the message of my
brochure. Then, I typed the content and
designed a few sketches of how I would
like my brochure to look. Then, I gathered
a few images from the web that matched
the desciption of the images I would like
to put in my brochure. Next, I opened
Adobe Illustrator to create my new logo.
Finally, I put all of my parts and design
together to create my brochure.

Description:
This project was intended to help students build skills that will help in the future when creating
fliers

Date:
May 9th, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 3 Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills
to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project
folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:
For this project the professor provided media, instructions, and specifications concerning what
he desired from us, as students, to accomplish in this
project. I began by creating sketches to demonstrate
the layout that would best showcase the message
and appeal to the audience. I used InDesign and
the FOCUS textbook to design the layout for my flier
using my best sketch. I then proceeded to do
the critique session in a small group, and
was open to feedback from my peers.
Finally, I applied all of the feedback from
the critique session to my final project.

Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop

Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow. Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images together

A design project formulated to help students learn to use Adobe Illustrator and create Logos.

Date:
June 6th, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 3 Brother Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator prefabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No
photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/
pencil, but delete the image before submitting.) Gather opinions from at least ten people about
which logo appeals most to them.

Process:
First, I decided that I needed to figure out what I
wanted to represent with my logos. Then, I
decided to make some preliminary sketches of
what I wanted my logos to look like. Once I had my
sketches, I then proceeded to create my logos
in Adobe Illustrator. After peer reviews,
I went back to my draft and edited the
logos I created. I then asked my peers for
their opinion on their favorite logo. Finally,
I prepared my project for class by posting
my blog.
