Bringing home
the championship
Cherry Hill American sweeps Haddonfield in a
best-of-three series to win its first 12-year-old
District 13 championship since 2008
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
To reach the Little League
World Series, a team from New
Jersey must first win its district,
section, state and regional championships.
Only 20 teams in New Jersey
even make it past the district
level. The 12-year-olds from Cherry Hill American Little League

are one of those 20 teams.

Cherry Hill American won the
New Jersey District 13 championship in the 12-year-old division,
sweeping Haddonfield Little
League in a best-of-three series to
advance to the Section 4 Tournament against five other district
winners in South Jersey.

Cherry Hill Public Schools interim superintendent Mark Cowell sits at his desk last week at the Malberg Administration Building. Cowell took over as superintendent of Cherry Hill Public Schools on
July 1 following the resignation of Maureen Reusche. Cowell said he plans to give the district guidance
while the board of education searches for a permanent superintendent.

Mark Cowell has been the interim superintendent in Cherry

Hill Public Schools for less than
a month, but hes already gotten
to meet some members of the

community.
From speaking to teachers
participating in professional development to witnessing students participating in Cherry
Hill High School Easts Summer
Glee Camp, Cowell has witnessed and experienced a sam-

and caring staff who go above and beyond

DAUGHTER OF A RESIDENT

Cherry Hill department is leasing nine new Ford Interceptors,

moving away from the previously used Dodge Chargers
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Cherry Hill residents who look
closely at the police cars driving
around town in the coming
months may see some differences.
There will be some new police
cars driving around town. The
cars will have the same black
color scheme with a gray stripe,
but the actual make and model
will be different.
Cherry Hill Council approved a
resolution to lease nine new police cars at last Mondays meeting. The police cars will be 2015
Ford Interceptors.
The new police cars are a move
away from the Dodge Chargers
the police department has used
the last few years. Chief of Police
William Monaghan said the po-

lice department decided to make

the move from Dodge to Ford because of problems with maintenance.
The Chargers have been giving us maintenance problems,
and the maintenance costs are
high, he said.
The township will have a
monthly lease payment for three
years and plans to purchase the
vehicles for $1 at the end of the
three years. The total cost of the
nine vehicles, including the installation of equipment, is
$412,812.
The cost of leasing the nine vehicles will have a minimal impact
on the municipal budget. Monaghan said federal forfeited and
confiscated funds are being used
to help pay for the vehicles. Those
funds will also help pay for 11 new

video systems and 15 wireless microphones, basket weave holsters

and home charging units. Council
approved these purchases in a
separate resolution.
Monaghan said the new video
systems will mostly go in the new
vehicles, with a few set aside for
installation in existing cars.
Were also outfitting our supervisory vehicles with cameras, he said. They dont have
video cameras right now.

Ordinance to curtail
Chambers Avenue parking
Residents living along Chambers Avenue will likely see fewer
cars parked on their street in the
near future.

Ready for school?

Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now
ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of

Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcoming
school year. So whats on your mind? Send
us your questions, and well do our best to
get answers.

questions for school leaders about the

new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can

pass along to you.

Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about repairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still providing great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership between schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relationship starts with effective communication.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.

Uncover the murder cases

of Lizzie Borden on Aug. 4
Join the Cherry Hill Public Library on
Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. and uncover the mysterious murder cases and psychological state of Lizzie Borden.
More than a century ago, Lizzie Borden
was accused and acquitted in the brutal ax
murders of her father and stepmother in
Fall River, Mass. Though the events occurred in 1892, no one was ever charged for
the murders and speculations about the

crimes continue to linger to this day.

Kate Butler, lecturer and living history
reenactor, reprises the role of Lizzie Borden in a performance disclosing little
known facts of the cases and an insight
into Bordens psychological state. By the
time the program is over, audience members must decide if Lizzie was innocent of
these crimes more than a century ago.
This event is open and free to the public
but recommended for those ages 18 and up.
For more information, contact Katie Hardesty at khardesty@chplnj.org or (856) 9031207.

Freeholder Board submits

damage assessment
By Freeholder Michelle Gentek
On June 23, like
many of my neighbors, my home was
damaged and we
lost power for several days due to a
severe super storm
that tore through
the region. Since
that day, the Camden County Office
of Emergency Management has
been working diligently with our
local, state and federal partners to
aggregate the total damage done
by this extreme weather event. At
this point, we are claiming more
than $4 million for reimbursement from the federal government in both public and
individual assistance for the destruction created by high winds
and heavy rains.
The four affected counties of
Camden, Atlantic, Gloucester and
Burlington
have
a
total
damage assessment of over $15
million, which surpasses all baselines for Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA)
support. Gov. Chris Christie has
signed off on a Major Disaster
Declaration and sent it through
FEMA to be signed by President
Barack Obama for federal assistance.
Our professionals have been
surveying the scope of the
damage for weeks coming up with
a real time assessment of damages with local officials, state police and FEMA to justify
reimbursement and federal assistance. This storm event was one
of the worst in scope and severity
for Camden County in modern
era and was the catalyst for significant damage to homeowners and
businesses.

In total thousands
of
trees
were
brought down by
straight-line winds
and power was cut
off to thousands of
residents in the aftermath of the
storm. All public
and private entities
had significant disruptions in their service for up to
10 days from the minute the storm
touched down.
To put this storm into perspective, there were more than 1,000
fire calls throughout the county
that afternoon, compared to an average day of 100 calls for service.
Furthermore, the department of
Public Safety took in 3,522 calls for
service in a 54 hour period during
Hurricane Sandy. On June 23, in a
six hour window, dispatchers took
in almost 70 percent of that volume by recording 2,432 total calls.
I want to thank our first responders for the extraordinary effort
they made during this super
storm and the work that continues to be done by our Office of
Emergency Management together
with all of our partners. My hope
is that the FEMA assistance
process is expedited and done as
quickly as possible so towns, businesses and residents can have
peace of mind and continue to
recover.

10 THE CHERRY HILL SUN JULY 2228, 2015

Defense, pitching guide team to victory

We have a really good hitting
team, but defense is what wins
games.
In pool play, Cherry Hill American lost to Haddonfield, 13-7, in
part because of one bad inning in
the field where Haddonfield put
nine runs on the board. Too many
runs allowed also hurt Cherry
Hill American last year in the 11year-old division, where it missed
out on a spot in the championship
game.
We ended up last year winning three games and losing one,
and we didnt go to the finals because of a tiebreaker rule where
they look at runs allowed,
Chorzelewski said.
This year, defense was not a
concern in the championship series. In Cherry Hill Americans
two-game sweep of Haddonfield,
it allowed just three runs.
We played very sound defense, Chorzelewski said. The
first game we shut them out 8-0.
Cherry Hill American was also

ways for Cherry Hill American.
The league hadnt won a district
championship in the 12-year-old
division since 2008. The current
group of kids also hadnt won a
district championship in the previous two years as 10- and 11-yearolds. Cherry Hill American was
also playing against Haddonfield,
the winner of the last two district
championships in the 12-year-old
division and the only team that
beat Cherry Hill American during round robin play.
None of these obstacles deterred the team, however. Head
coach Ed Chorzelewski knew his
team had plenty of offense and
just needed to play good defense
to win the championship.
What I was stressing from the
beginning was that we had to play
solid defense, Chorzelewski said.

able to prevent a slew of runs

thanks to the pitching of Noah
Stofman, Steven Sgouros and Ted
Drinkwater. Chorzelewski said
his pitching staff showed poise in
the two games and came through
in a big way.
I was impressed with how
they handled themselves on the
mound, Chorzelewski said. As
12-year-olds, you can get emotionally upset quickly. They were
emotionally sound and they didnt walk many people at all.
The championship was two
years in the making for Cherry
Hill American. Chorzelewski said
District 13 is tough to win with
Haddonfield and Haddon Township fielding tough teams every
year. Having come through was a
huge sense of accomplishment
for the team.
Weve come so close against
this team in the past, he said.
These kids were determined to
win this district. They were very
proud.
Cherry Hill Americans season
will continue into the Section 4
Tournament, where it will play
against the five other district
champions in South Jersey. The
winner of the tournament will
advance to the New Jersey State
Tournament in Hammonton at
the end of the month.
Chorzelewski feels the tough
competition in District 13 helped
prepare his team for the games
ahead. He feels Cherry Hill American can go very far if the team
plays like it did in the championship series.
Knowing these players and
this team and the way we played
in districts with sound defense
and hitting, theres no stopping
this team, he said.

Council approved an ordinance
on first reading at last Mondays
meeting putting parking restrictions on Chambers Avenue. The
new ordinance would make parking on the street allowable by permit only, with permits being issued to local residents. Non-permit parking would be prohibited.
Monaghan said the ordinance
was proposed after the police department fielded numerous complaints from residents in the area
about the number of vehicles
parked along the street. Monaghan said vehicles from adjacent
businesses such as Cherry Hill
Dodge were parking along the
street instead of at the business.
This will eliminate the parking on the street and will hopefully put to bed any issues, Monaghan said.
The second reading and public
hearing for the ordinance is
scheduled for the next council
meeting on July 27.

Budget update
Township chief financial officer Michelle Samalonis informed
council at the meeting work is
progressing on the townships
2016 fiscal year budget, just prior
to council passing a resolution
adopting a temporary budget.
The township uses the temporary
budget from July 1 until the adoption of the 2016 budget.
Samalonis said the budget is on
track to be introduced at councils
meeting on Aug. 17. More information on the budget and the tax
impact for residents will be available at the meeting. The budget is
on schedule to be up for adoption
in September.

Cowell has served as teacher, business

Its the teachers, parents and

the students, Cowell said. If
you have those three components,
youre going to be a good district.
Cowell was hired on June 9 to
serve as the interim superintendent following the resignation of
Maureen Reusche. Cowell will
serve as superintendent until the
board of education makes a permanent hire. The board is beginning to interview candidates and
plans to make a hire sometime in
the fall.
Cowell last served as a superintendent in 2006 in the Pemberton
Township School District. After
he retired from that position, he
served as a state fiscal monitor
for New Jersey. In the position, he
oversaw operations in districts
such as Asbury Park, Pleasantville, Trenton and Camden. He
retired from state fiscal monitor
in 2013.
During his time as state fiscal

monitor, Cowell received interest

from school districts looking for
an interim superintendent.
Ive had my name on the list
for a number of years to be an interim superintendent, he said. I
was called many times, but I was
state monitor. I told them No, I
cant do it, Im not interested.
Earlier this year, about two
years after retiring from the state
fiscal monitor position, Cowell
discovered he wanted a new challenge. It was then when Cherry
Hill and two other school districts
came calling.
I figured, why not, lets try it,
he said.
Cowell interviewed with the
board of education shortly thereafter. From the interview, Cowell
felt the district was a perfect
match.
I came for the interview and I
met the board members and answered their questions, Cowell
said. I thought this is a pretty
good place. I feel that I have a lot
to offer still. I have a lot of energy.
I felt that I could contribute to the
district.
As interim superintendent,

Dennis Flyer Theater, Camden County College, Blackwood, NJ 856-227-3091

Cowell described his role as being

a placeholder. He said his main
goal is to help the district through
the summer and the early part of
next school year.
I have found a few things I can
help with and thats what Im
working on, he said. As issues
come up, I can deal with them as
well.
Cowell has experience in a variety of areas. He was a teacher
for 12 years at Marcus Newcomb
School and served as a business
administrator at Pemberton for
more than a decade before being
hired as superintendent in 2001.
Cowell has been impressed
with a number of aspects of
Cherry Hill. It began when he attended his first board of education meeting on June 9.
I was most impressed with
how the board runs their business at a meeting, he said. The
committee reports and how
theyre put out and the in-depth
discussions. You go to a lot of
board meetings in other districts
and you dont see that.
Cowell was also impressed
with the relationship between the
school district and municipality.
The district and the municipality work so well together, he
said. Ive already been to the
mayors office and met with him.
I met with the chief of police.
Cherry Hill is lucky to have such
strong leaders.
Cowells tenure in Cherry Hill
is expected to be short. However,
Cowell wont be finished with education when he leaves Cherry
Hill. Cowell is one of five people
running unopposed for school
board in the New Hope-Solebury
School District this fall and will
likely be elected to a seat in November.
