ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Directions (Q. 36-45): Read the passage carefully
and answer the questions given below it.
July 15, 2010 turned out to be a historic day, as
the Indian Rupee got the much-awaited symbol, just like
other leading currencies of the world, viz Dollar, Euro,
Pound Sterling and the Yen. The new symbol ` is an
amalgamation of Devanagri Ra and the Roman R
without the stem. Till now, the Rupee was written in
various abbreviated forms in different languages.
The new symbol designed by IIT Bombay
postgraduate Shri D Udaya Kumar was approved by the
Union Cabinet on July 15. Its a big statement on the
Indian currency. The symbol would lend a distinctive
character and identity to the currency and further
highlight the strength and global face of the Indian
economy, said Information and Broadcasting Minister
Smt Ambika Soni, while briefing the media on the
Cabinet decision.
The new symbol will not be printed or
embossed on currency notes or coins, but it would be
included in the Unicode Standard to ensure that it is
easily displayed and printed in the electronic and print
media. The encoding of the rupee symbol in the Indian
Standards is estimated to take about six months while
encoding in the Unicode and ISO/IEC10646 will take
about 18 months to two years. It will also be
incorporated in software packages and keyboards for
use in India.
On March 5, 2009 the Government announced a
contest to create a symbol for the Rupee, inviting entries
for the symbol, which would reflect and capture the
Indian ethos and culture. Over 3000 entries were
received, which were evaluated by a jury headed by the
Deputy Governor, RBI, which also included experts from
three reputed art and design institutes. The Jury
selected five entries and also gave its evaluation of these
five entries to the Government to take a final decision.
Shri Udaya Kumars entry was the Best of Five.
He will get an award of Rs. 2.5 lakh and more than that
an incredible fame, as the designer of the Rupee symbol.
My design is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman
letters capital R and Devanagri Ra which represents
rupaiah, to appeal to international and Indian audiences.
It is based on the tricolor, with two lines at the top and
white space in between, a visibly-happy Kumar said.

SSC CORNER
FOOD AND NUTRITION
Human diet contains substances called proximal
principles, which are essential for maintenance of life
and health. These proximal principles are:
CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEINS AND VITAMINS
Carbohydrates supply energy to our body for the
necessary internal and external activities. The internal
body parts require energy for constant functioning,
which is supplied by carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are
found in abundance in wheat, rice, potato, banana as
sugars and starches, etc.
Proteins (origin from proteus, which means first
or most important), are essential for building new
tissues and repairing old ones. Thus, they are called
body builders for a reason. Proteins can be found in
eggs, meat, pulses, beans, milk and cheese.
Vitamins are complex chemicals required for
certain essential bodily reactions and processes.
FATS, MINERALS AND WATER
Fats are found in oils, ghee and butter. Unsaturated fats
are good from the viewpoint of health and are advised
for heart patients. Saturated fats create cholesterol in
the arteries, which can block them, thereby leading to
heart problems.
Minerals are inorganic substances present in
very small or trace quantities in different foods. They
are essential to regulate normal body processes e.g.
Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Sulphur,
Phosphorus etc.
Water is of utmost importance for biochemical
reactions, which cannot occur in its absence.
A balanced diet is one which contains all the
necessary proximal principles in the right proportion
for the maintenance of health. We cannot get all these
elements together in a single food item. Therefore, to get
them in the right proportion, we need to mix certain
articles in our diet and have a balanced diet.
VITAMINS AND DEFICIENCY DISORDERS
Vitamins, discovered by Funk, are found naturally in
certain foods and their absence may cause one or the
other deficiency disease. Vitamins can be both watersoluble and fat-soluble in nature.
VITAMIN A
It is a general health-giving vitamin and improves
resistance to infection and tones up the entire body
system. It ensures good appetite and promotes growth.
Its deficiency causes night blindness and skin disorders.
Found in milk, butter, egg yolk, ghee, carrot,
tomatoes, fresh, leafy and yellow vegetables, fresh
fruits and cod liver oil.
GENERAL AWARENESS JULY 2015
VITAMIN B
Present in cereals, peas and beans. Protects the body
from beriberi, pellagra and cures pernicious anemia,
degeneration of sex glands and enlargement of liver
and adrenals.
VITAMIN C
Ensures healthy teeth, bones, and protects against
scurvy. Present in fresh vegetables, orange, lemon,
lettuce, tomato, cabbage and turnip.
VITAMIN D
Present in milk, butter, ghee, cod liver oil, egg yolk. It is
also produced under the skin in the presence of
ultraviolet rays of the sun. It promotes bone formation
and prevents rickets.
VITAMINS E
It has vital influence on reproductive organs. Its absence
can cause sterility. This vitamin is present in
germinated wheat.
VITAMIN K
Found in fish, oats, and wheat. It helps in proper
clotting of blood in case of injuries.

BANKING FRAMEWORK
WHAT IS A BANK?
DEFINITION OF BANKING
Banking is a legally defined activity, which means that it
is governed by strict rules and regulations. The Banking
Regulation Act, 1949 defines and governs the banking
activities in India. As per Section 5(b) of this act,
banking has been defined as the accepting, for the
purpose of lending or investment, of deposits of
money from the public, repayable on demand or
otherwise, and withdrawal by cheque, draft, order or
otherwise. In simple words, banking is related to
a) Accepting deposits of money from the public.
b) For the purpose of lending, i.e. making loans, and
making investments (in approved govt. securities).
c) Withdrawal of money on demand or through
cheque.
The above three are the most basic functions of
the banks. Other than this, banks are allowed to
undertake several other functions like bill business,
foreign exchange business, bonds/debentures, bank
guarantees, letter of credit etc. as mentioned in sec 6 of
the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
However, modern banking covers a large
number of other activities, like issuance of debit / credit
cards, providing safe custody of valuable items, locker
facility, ATM services, Transfer of funds, etc. apart from
accepting deposits and making loans.
GENERAL AWARENESS JULY 2015
BANKING COMPANY
A company which transacts the business of banking as
defined in Banking Regulation Act is known as banking
company.
BANK LICENCE
To undertake the banking activities in India, it is
compulsory, by law, to obtain a licence from the Reserve
Bank of India (Sec.22 of Banking Regulation Act, 1949).
Even the foreign banks have to obtain such a licence
from the RBI before opening a branch in India. The RBI
also has the powers to cancel the licence, if it is not
satisfied with the banks functioning.
Minimum capital required to start a banking
company is Rs. 500 crore.
REGULATION OF BANKS
The Banking Regulation Act, 1949 authorises the
Reserve Bank of India to regulate and control the banks
in India. As per section 35(a) of this law, the RBI is fully
authorized to issue any instructions / directions to the
banks as it deems fit, as and when considered necessary.
It is mandatory for all the banks (including foreign
banks) to comply with directions of the RBI.

SCHEDULED BANK
A bank whose name appears in the second schedule of
the RBI Act 1934 is called a scheduled bank. Whenever
the RBI is not satisfied with the functioning of a bank, it
may delete the name of that bank from the second
schedule. Barring a few small banks, almost all banks
(including foreign ones) in India are Scheduled Banks.
The bank whose name does not appear in the 2nd
schedule is called a non- scheduled bank.
STATUTORY BANK
The banks which have been constituted under a
separate Act of Parliament are called Statutory Banks.
Examples of such banks are Reserve Bank of India
(Reserve Bank of India Act-1934), State Bank of India
(State Bank of India Act 1955), IDBI Bank (Industrial
Development Bank (Transfer of Undertaking and
Repeal) Act, 2003).
NATIONALISED BANKS
The banks which were nationalised in 1969 and 1980
vide Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of
Undertaking) Act are called nationalised banks. In all, 14
banks were nationalised in 1969 and 6 in 1980. Of the 6
banks nationalised in 1980, New Bank of India was
merged with Punjab National Bank in 1993. (These
banks now fall in the category of public sector bank).
Punjab National Bank is the largest nationalised bank in
India.
PRIVATE BANKS
All banks other than public sector banks are called
Private Banks. These banks are registered under the
Companies Act, 1956. They are of two types Indian
GENERAL AWARENESS JULY 2015
COOPERATIVE BANKS
These banks are co-operative societies registered under
the respective State Cooperative Societies Act. For their
organisational structure, they are governed by the State
Cooperative Societies Act and for their banking
functions they are governed under Banking Regulation
Act.
DIFFERENTIATED BANKING
According to the Reserve Bank of India, India needs
variety of Banks to cater to different strata of society.
The Nachiket Mor Committee constituted by the RBI has
proposed a Differentiated Banking system with
Payments Banks for Deposits and Wholesale Banks for
credit with relaxed entry points for financial inclusion.
The Reserve Bank has released the guidelines for
payment banks and small banks.
Payments banks can receive deposits and remittances,
but cannot lend; focus on migrant labour and low
income households.
Small banks will lend to un-served and under-served
sections, including small business units, small and
marginal farmers, and micro and small industries.
