 Feature College Article: Advice from EquestrianCollegeRecruiter.com
During the past several months I have
been to many different horse shows
from Florida to New York, these shows
have encompassed everything from the
“A” shows to schooling shows. Over that
time period I have had the opportunity
to speak to many parents and riders
about the college recruiting process. I
am hoping to clear up some
misconceptions in this article about the
level of riders that make it onto the
college teams.
As far as the NCAA is concerned, it is true
that they are seeking the riders who
compete and do well at the 3'6” level.
However, what many riders do not
realize is that not all of the most
successful riders wish to ride for an
NCAA school. Under NCAA rules the
athlete must not be a professional, the
NCAA designates an equestrian
professional as one who wins prize
money competing at a horse show. This
includes all of our successful “A” circuit
junior hunter and jumper riders. Now
technically, if your horses show related
expenses including trainers, shipping,
hotels and braiding etc offsets these
winnings they will no longer count as
profit. However, it is the rider's
responsibility to keep very accurate
records throughout their high school
years so that they can prove that each
horse show, taken individually, did not
create a profit. Once an equestrian
athlete has started college and
throughout each collegiate school year,
that rider may accept zero prize money
from the horse show. This rule will
remain in effect as long as the athlete is

competing for their college. I spoke
personally to some very prominent
trainers that told me that their
students would not even consider an
NCAA school for this reason. This
opens the door for the 3'6” rider who
does not wish to compete on the “A”
circuit while in college. For this
reason, do not sell your self short
thinking only the best Maclay riders
get recruited to NCAA schools, many
of the best riders have their eyes on
an IHSA riding program or do not plan
on riding in college at all.
As far as the IHSA teams are
concerned, they are looking for riders
from beginner walk trot through the
advanced riders. This is where many
parents and riders were surprised.
They all assumed that only the “A”
show kids would ever be recruited by
a college riding team. When I
explained that the beginner rider is
just as important to the team as the
advanced rider in IHSA competitions,
they were elated. Many of them
never even thought that their child,
who has only shown at schooling
shows competing in the 2'6” division,
should even consider trying out. In
fact, these are just the types of riders
that coaches are looking for. The IHSA
coach loves to find the very
experienced local rider that just
never had the funds to burn up the
“circuit”.
So if you are interested in riding in one
of the college programs, you must be
proactive in your approach to getting
noticed by a college. If you are a hard
worker in school and at the barn, even
though you may not have tons of show
experience, go ahead and put a video
together along with a resume and send
copies individually to colleges that you
are interested in. Another option is to
profile yourself on
EquestrianCollegeRecruiter.com, then
thru the recruiting web site contact the
colleges that you are interested in and
bring to the coaches attention that you
are profiled on the web site. Be sure to
let them know your year of graduation
from high school and chosen discipline
so that it will be easy for them to find
you, or better yet send them your direct
page link. Remember the coaches do
not have the time or resources to scour
the country looking for good riders
competing at schooling shows. Yes, they
may be at some of the “A” shows
competing with their teams and they
may be looking for talented riders.
However, NCAA coaches cannot
approach you at a horse show unless
they are certain of your age and that
information is often not available to
them in the show office because of
privacy laws and they can not risk a
recruiting violation. Many riders
therefore think “Oh well, I haven't been
contacted by any schools so I must not
be good enough”. It is your job as a
potential recruit to make yourself
known to the coaches.
Another common misconception as to
the recruiting process is the recruiting
timing. Many high school athletes tend
to wait until late in their junior year,
some even waiting until senior year,

before they focus their attention on
college riding options. The colleges on the
other hand begin looking out for
prospective athletes and tracking them
much earlier. About 20% of college
coaches start tracking athletes as early as
the athletes' freshman year in high
school, another 40% start looking for
sophomores and the remaining 40%
begin their search in the beginning of the
athletes' junior year. None of the coaches
surveyed start searching for recruits in
the athletes' senior year. Also remember
that NCAA coaches, by law, cannot
contact an athlete directly by phone or in
person until after July 1 of the start of that
athletes Senior year in high school, the
coaches may however contact a
prospective student by email or letter
after September 1 of the athletes junior
year, so just because you are not hearing
from them does not mean they are not
watching you. As the athlete, you may
contact the coach in writing or by email,
explain you have an interest in their
college and request that the coach keep
an eye on you.
In closing my advice would be this: keep
up your school grades throughout high
school since many academic scholarships
are given out to get the riders wanted for
a college team. Be familiar with the NCAA
recruiting guidelines which are located on

you do not hinder your recruiting
eligibility unknowingly. Be proactive in
your recruiting process and keep your
academic and riding resume up to date on
EquestrianCollegeRecruiter.com since
sometimes a college that is not on an
athletes' radar will find you. Contact the
coaches from the schools of your choice
often so they know you are interested in
their college. Most importantly, pick a
college based on the education it offers
you and not based on the quality of its
equestrian team. If I can answer any of

The mission of the Emerging
Athletes Program is to develop
and implement a system of
identifying and nurturing
talented young riders, by

pipeline to international
competition. The Emerging
Athletes Program will provide
young riders in our sport with the
opportunity to learn from our
country’s top professional riders
and trainers. The training
sessions will evaluate the rider’s
horsemanship, knowledge and
riding ability.
Clinics Program
Education is one of the primary
goals of the USHJA. Through the
USHJA Clinics Programs, many
opportunities exist for our
outstanding professionals and
leaders in the industry to give
back their experience and
knowledge to all levels of
equestrian participants.
International Hunter Derby
The High Performance Hunter
Committee developed this
program to bring the lost art of
tradition and horsemanship back
to the show ring. This committee
has developed a series of classes
with the hope of an international
sensation. The USHJA
International Hunter Derby Series
was created to bring show
hunters to the international level,
to increase spectator, media and
sponsorship interest, and to bring
tradition and basic riding
principles back to the sport of
showing hunters.
Junior Career Development
Program
The purpose of the USHJA Junior
Career Development Program is
to allow junior riders the
opportunity to be an apprentice
for a day, onsite, with a
competition official, i.e. judge,
show manager, show secretary,
steward, course designer, vet or
farrier. The program allows junior
riders an opportunity to have a
better understanding of the
duties and responsibilities of
these officials and to determine if
they would like to pursue a
career in one of these positions.
Resource Guide
Outreach Competition and
Medal Program
Both programs are designed to
encourage increased
participation from hunter/jumper
groups of every level across the
United States. Created by the
USHJA’s B/C/Local Task Force and
the Affiliates Committee, the new
programs will set a minimum
standard for local competitions
that want the right to refer to the
Federation rulebook for
governance without the
Federation or USHJA having any
regulatory function regarding
their association or competition.
Included in the Outreach
Programs will be four Outreach
Medal Classes that are designed
to give riders who compete at
unrated or schooling shows the
ability to achieve national
recognition.
Trainer Certification Program
The mission of the USHJA Trainer
Certification Program is to
preserve the American
Hunter/Jumper Forward System
of riding and jumping through the
development of a comprehensive
education and certification
program for all levels of
professional trainers. The USHJA
Trainer Certification Program is a
voluntary program. It is intended
to help promote trainer
credibility and offer ongoing
professional support.
Certification does demonstrate a
marketable merit of knowledge
that will gain in credibility with
each passing year.

The Symposiums offer attendees
a rare opportunity to participate
in practical training sessions and
round table discussions with top

 The American National Riding Commission
The American National Riding
Commission (ANRC) was established in
1936, with the goal of initiating a
standardized method to educate riders
and developing a system to assess riding
ability. The methodology was based on
the teachings of Captain Vladimir
Littauer, whose system of progressive
forward riding educated such greats as
George Morris, Joe Fargis, Lendon Gray,
Pam Baker, Jane Dillon, and Bernie
Traurig. The ANRC uses the concepts of
the Forward Riding System as a
foundation for its educational programs
integrated with the changes and
developments that are ongoing in
today's world of equestrian sport.
ANRC promotes the highest quality of

riding clinics; a Rider Certification

goal: competing in a Sunday
"real FEI Grandprix" I had a
chance to reflect on how
circumstances and individuals can
influence the course of one’s' life
path. The specific individual I was
thinking about is a horse,
Clover Count. When I arrived
at the barn I had an emotional
task at hand. Clover was
scheduled to leave Seabreeze
the next morning to head up
to his retirement home at The
Bakker's, the family that has
owned him for the last 9 or 10
years. I sat with him, admiring
his amazing physical
appearance and thanking him
for all his contributions to my
life. I think that he
understood me and I was
astonished by the impact this fine
animal has had upon both my
business and personal life. We
should all be so lucky!
I first saw Clover a rather large
but very shiny, dappled bay Irish
gelding by Clover Hill on a
shopping trip to Argentina in
1998. I was not impressed by his
appearance but tried to think of a
niche that he could fill. He was a
"grand prix horse" and expensive.
I watched someone ride him and
he was stiff and not all that
impressive but I wanted to sit on
him anyway. I took my sit and
jumped the largest jump that I
ever jumped in my life on him. A
good Argentine sales tactic! I still
wasn't sure what this horse was
suited for, but one thing was for
sure, he was noble and jumped
the water without the bat of an
eye! I vetted him and soon he
was on a plane to the U.S. He
arrived in a terrible state. They
had done me the favor of body
clipping him before shipping but

since it was the middle of
summer in Argentina and they
don't use UV protection fly
sheets he turned a burnt orange
color! Horrified here was my new
"Grand Prix horse" orange and
underweight. Wellington was just
two weeks away. My orange

horse came with me but he just
wasn't right. The trip, the change
of climate, all those factors
(maybe he was just embarrassed
to be orange) added up to he
wasn't performing up to
expectations. I decided to put
him on the back burner and let
him get fat and healthy. My non-
riding 9 year old son asked if he
could ride the "big Irish". Didn't
seem like the best idea in the
world but then again why not?
The horse was kind and the kid
actually wanted to ride. The
horse needed to regain his
strength. It was a win-win and
the ball started rolling!
The kid rode every day! The
horse got healthier, the orange
started to fade....The kid asked to
show the big irish! The kid mind
you is 9 years old and about 4'
tall, the horse is 17.1 and
massive. What division I ask?
Children’s Hunters he says. Okay,
done deal. Kid, Nikko Ritter, is
hooked, gets ribbons, horse is
happy, Mom is thrilled. That was
Clover's first accomplishment.
Clover's second task was now to
make me a believer in the jumper
world. I had clung to my safety
net for most of my 30 plus
years in the hunter divisions
and trained equitation kids.
But now I had a horse that
could really jump big and
would jump! Why not? I
learned how to jump the
open water and got my feet
wet jumping "big" jumps. I
had the help of Anthony
D'Ambrosio and we schooled
and trained for the rest of
that season in Wellington. I
even joined in on George
Morris's famed Tuesday
group lesson! I jumped what was
known as the Talent Classes
which were modified grand prix
type events that were for either
inexperienced horse or rider. It
was a thrill for me, hunter girl,
and the very first time that I ever
showed in the International Ring
in Wellington was on Clover.
Clover also taught me that when
a horse turns his head to your
stirrup he is looking for a treat
not to question my stirrup
position. How stupid did I feel
when I finally realized ...”oh my
god he just wants some sugar!”.
He was raised well! The object
however, was to sell Clover and
that just wasn't happening.
People tried him but he wasn't
fancy enough or pretty enough or
careful enough or whatever..he
just wasn't enough for anyone
else, but he was everything to us.
Wellington was finished and on
we went to Tampa when I had a
call from a friend that knew of
the horse. Did I think he could do
the equitation? Well...umm yes
but he is a very big horse and not
what one would necessarily call
drop dead flashy! The people
arrived to try the horse and my
heart sank when this "well she is
tall" 5' nothing, 95lbs soaking
wet, shy, quiet girl showed up to
try him. "Can we show him in a
class?" "Sure!" The girl goes in
and does what I call the 4-H
sitting trot start to finish and
completes what I find out later to
be her very first 3'6 classes. They
buy Clover and off they go to
South Carolina. Good reports
keep coming back and then the
phone call! The girl, Katherine
Bakker has made it through the
regionals in her first year of
jumping 3'6 and has had a falling
out with the trainer and “can you
come train her in New York?” the
very last year of the "Garden".
Actually I could not, but I made
arrangements for her to go train
with one of the best and she did
go and perform respectably with
only a snide remark or two about
her "field hunter mount!"
Accomplishment three for Clover,
fulfill a lifelong dream of a child
to show at Madison Square
Garden!
Katy then became a full time
client and student at Seabreeze
and jumped head first into the
horses, the family had as many as
8 horses at one point and Clover
taught her to jump the high
juniors. Clover accomplishment
number four.
Fast forward to the end of a
young rider's career, Katy ready
for college losing interest in
horses but told she has to finish
out her junior commitment to
her trainers and her horses.
Hampton Classic, the famous
Calvin Klein Equitation Class, all
the natural jumps, international
ring, pouring rain, horrible day,
Clover and Katy go in and rock!

She receives the second highest
score of the day. Clover comes
through again..Katy continues to
ride...Life goes on. Thanks Clover!
There is story after story. One of
my favorites is that Clover had a
slight tendon injury and it was
suggested that we downgrade his
career for a while to allow it to
heal. We leased him to a lovely
woman who took great care of
him and at the end of the lease
offered us a fraction of the buy -
out because "he just isn't that
fancy"...we politely declined and I
thought to myself these people
just don't get it. This is the best
horse in the world...we took him
back.
Nikko was invited to participate
in the Children’s FEI World
Jumper Championships but as the
host country we had to offer up
two horses per USA rider. We
offered our own horse, Kates
Bridge and the Bakkers loaned
Clover. Through the draw we
didn't get to ride our horse, but
once again Nikko was mounted
on Clover and competed for his
first time in the International Ring
on the very same mount his
mother rode for her very first
time! Ironic, Nikko did not win,
Kate's Bridge was declared best
horse of the competition but the
satisfaction was there. Score
another victory for Clover.
Clover got dragged along to
several indoor competitions as
the second horse and as a last
minute replacement he did carry
Sloan Coles to a final cut at the
Medal one year and he did win
with Katy the "jr hunter warm up
" the day before the Medal finals!
Not bad for the field hunter!
But Clover truly got the last
laugh when he turned it all
around and earned his place in
equitation history. In 2007 he
carried his" boy”, Nikko, who 11

years earlier he carried around
his first 3' course, to victory in the
USET finals at the ripe old age of
22! Family ties that
bind…Without the Bakker’s
generosity, without the
appreciation and respect that we
admired and recognized in this
fine animal none of the above
would have occurred. We tried
to retire him after that but Clover
would have none of it and carried
Mrs. Bakker to a stint in Spruce
Meadows the year following the
USET where ironically we could
have sold "good old Clover"
about 20 times over. He had
finally proven to everyone else
what we knew all along. He is
the best horse in the world!
Clover Count, we love you, we
appreciate you and I personally
salute you for all you have done
for me and my family on so many
levels. Last Sunday would never
have happened for me if you
hadn't made me believe. Enjoy
your retirement and know that
you are loved.

 70 Day Stallion Test – First Time In North America!

December 12th, 2009 marked the
culmination of the first 70 Day Stallion
Test in North America. With the demise of
the 100 Day Stallion test, Silver Creek
Farms of Broken Arrow, OK recognized the
need to present a format for N American
Stallion owners to have the opportunity
to test their stallions in a recognized and
approved venue for fulfilling their
performance requirements. For most of
the warmblood registries both in N
America and in Europe, in order for a
stallion to receive a lifetime breeding
license, the stallion must fulfill
performance requirements. In the past, it
was either through competition – usually
by competing successfully through Grand
Prix in Dressage or Jumping, or Advanced
Level in Combined Training – or by
completing the 100 Day Performance
test. The 100 Day Test has been replaced
in Europe by the 30 Day selection test and
the subsequent 70 Day Performance Test
for those stallions that successfully
complete the 30 Day test. The 70 Day Test
at Silver Creek Farms -the first of its kind
held in North America-is held in
accordance with the German Stock
b re e d i n g L aws a n d fo l l ows t h e
requirements of the German Equestrian
Federation. This allows stallions that
successfully complete the testing to fulfill
the performance requirement for any of
the European or European type registries
with which they may be provisionally
licensed and is recognized worldwide.
The picturesque Silver Creek Farms
presents the perfect location for the 70
Day test. Centrally located, it offers easy
accessibility for stallion owners
throughout North America.
It is also able to provide excellent
accommodations for the stallions and,
with 140 acres, allows for a cross country
course. Summer Stoffel and Barbara
Sikkink out did themselves bringing it all
together and creating a successful venue.
They were fortunate to have the
assistance of an incredible crew of onsite
staff, an integral part of the process. All
contributed to making this testing run

smoothly and efficiently.
The stallion director, Harald Hoffmann,
has proven himself to be outstanding at
maximizing each stallion’s ability while
in the testing. His ability and expertise is
based on a solid foundation.
As a German
“Pferdewirtschaftsmeister” (Master of
Horse Management), he is also a
publically appointed and sworn expert Silver Creek’s Valado during demonstration
by the North Rhine-Westphalian FL Stallions at 70 Day Test
Chamber of Agriculture for competition
as well as for breeding and
management of horses. He is a Grand
Prix rider and judge for competition and
breeding.
With so many dressage bred stallions in
the testing, the top placing stallions had
to show versatility and have jumping
aptitude. What is also interesting to
note is that two-thirds of the stallions in
Helios
the testing were born and/or bred here
in North America! It speaks volumes
about the progress that breeders have
made since the first 100 Day Stallion
Test was held in North America.
Silver Creek Farms had a vision to assist
sport horse breeders in North America
and is the driving force behind the new
North American Sport Horse
Federation.
They deserve huge accolades for their Escapade I
successful implementation and running
of the test. As it is an independently run
format not associated with any breed
registry, the intent is to hold a testing
annually and hopefully avoid some of
the controversy that has been
associated with hosting a stallion test.
