MethodStatementforAsphaltPavingWorksaregivenbelow:

1.Scope:
Thescopeofworkofthismethodstatementistodescribethe
responsibilitiesofpersonnelinvolved,executionprocedure,safety
factorsanddocumentstoberecordedforAsphaltPavingWorks.

2.RelevantProcess/Specifications:

3.Responsibility:
TheConstructionManager/ProjectEngineerisresponsibleforthe
asphaltpavingworks.
TheCivilConstructionContractorsSafetyOfficershallensurethat
necessaryworkpermitsareavailedbeforetheworkcommencesand
thattheworkiscarryingoutinsafemanner.
Theresponsibilityofthesurveyactivitieslieswithasphaltpavingwork
subcontractor.Thesurveyteamofcivilconstructioncontractorshall
verifythedatafrequently.
InspectionandtestingactivitiesshallbecontrolledbytheQCEngineer
ofCivilConstructionContractorthroughthesitelaboratoryof

4.PlantsandEquipment:
Bitumenspraytankers,asphaltpaver,Tandemsteelroller,handrollers,
asphaltbatchingplant,etc.

5.ExecutionProcedure:
PriortoCommencement:
Safety:
Primeimportanceshallbegivenforpersonnelsafetyandprotectionof
utilitylines/services.Itshallbeensuredthatthepersonnelinvolvedare
awareabouttheCompanySafetyregulationandconfirmthatthe
machineriesareregularlymaintained.Furthertoabove,thefollowing
keypointsshallbeconsideredimportant.
a.Copiesofdrivers/operatorslicensevehiclesregistrationandsecurity
passestobesubmittedtoCompanysafetydepartmentbefore
commencingthework.
b.Allmovingvehicle/equipmentshallhavereversehorn.
c.Transportingofpersonspervehicleisrestrictedtothenumberof
seatbeltsavailableinthepickup.
d.Deepexcavationsshallbeadequatelyshored,barricadedand
warningsigns&lightsshallbeposted.
e.Roadsafetysigns/roaddiversionsignsshallbeinstalledwherever
applicableforthesafemovementofvehiclesandequipment.
f.AllmajorequipmentshallbetestedandcertifiedbyThirdPartyprior
tomobilizationtosite.
ExistingServicesandFacilities:
a)Beforecommencementofthework,ascertainthenatureandlocation
ofallexistingaboveandundergroundservicesatsitebyvisualsurvey
andreviewingtheservicelayoutdrawing(ifavailable)
Ifanyprotection,rerouting,terminationorremovalsofservicesare
requiredforthesmoothprogressingofwork,itshallbediscussedand

writtenapprovalshallbeobtainedfromemployer/companyas
appropriate.Forserviceprotection,approvedmethodofprotectionshall
beadopted.
b)Awarningtapeshallbetiedatadistanceof2metersawayfromthe
services/aswarningsign,torestrictthemovementoftheequipment.
Survey:
a)Establishandprotectsufficientnumberofstationstoreestablishthe
stationsiftheyaredisturbedduringwork.
b)Postwoodenstackforlineandgradientoftheroad.
c)Theexistingsandtracksshallbeblocked,reroutedandtraffic
diversionsignsshallbepostedpriortothecommencementofthework.
InProcessProcedure:
Theexecutionproceduresshallbedividedintofollowingsections,
whichare:
a)PrimeCoat.
b)Bindercourse.
c)Tackcoat.
d)Wearingcourse.
a)PrimeCoat:
QualityofPrimershouldbeasperBS1707or1S:217,IS:454andIS:
8887.
Immediatelybeforeapplyingtheprimecoat(whichshallbepreliminarily
approved),thefullwidthofthesurfaceshallbecleanedwith
compressedair.
i)Thebituminousmaterialfortheprimecoatshallbeappliedbymeans
ofbitumenspraytankers.
ii)Thisshallbeappliedinasinglelayerattherateof0.71.5liters
/sq.mandatatemperaturenotexceeding70C.Thissurfaceshallbe
curedfor24hours.

iii)Theoverspreadareashallbecuredmorethan24hours/until
excessprimecoatisevaporated.
b)BinderCourse:
QualityofBindershouldbeasperAASHOT182orIS:73,IS:
217,1S:454andIS:8887.
i)Immediatelybeforepavingthebindercoursematerial,thesurfaceof
theprimecoatshallbecleanedwithcompressedairandshallbe
ensuredthatthesurfaceisdry.
ii)Thehotasphaltmixshallbebroughtfromthemixingplantby6
wheeltrucksortrailers.Uponarrivalatsite,theasphaltmixshallbe
dumpedintotheasphaltpaver.
iii)Theasphaltpavershalllaythematerialtotherequiredthickness
andlevel.
iv)Themixshallbecompactedassoonaspossibleafterspreadingthe
material.Tandemrollersshallfollowthelayingoperationtocarryout
breakdownrollinguptotemperatureof110120C.Pneumatictired
rollersandtandemrollersshallfollowthebreakdownrollingand
sufficientpassesshallbemadetoachievetherequiredcompaction.
Rollingshallstartfromthesidesandproceedtowardthecenter.Each
tripoftherollershalloverlapthepervioustripbyatleast30cm.Roller
wheelshallbekeptmoistened.Therollershallbecapableofreversing
withoutbacklashandshallbefreefromwornparts.
Heavyrollersshallbeusedtocompleteallrollingincludingelimination
ofwavescausedbythelighterrollers.Fullcompactionshallbe
obtainedbeforetheasphalttemperaturereaches100C.Compaction
shallbeinaccordancewithspecificationofrelevantstandard.
v)Theconstructionjointsshallbepreparedbycuttingthelayer
verticallydownbymeansofasphaltsawcuttingmachineorwithjack
hammer.Thejointshallbecleanedwellbycompressedairandtack
coatmaterialshallbeappliedontheverticalandhorizontalsurfacefor
betterbonding.Extremelygoodcareshallbetakenwhenasphaltislaid
atconstructionjoints.
vi)Theareasinaccessibleforheavyrollersshallbecompactedwith

platecompactorsorhandtampers.Afterreachingthebasecoursetop
level,suitablefillmaterial(dunesand)shallbedumpedtothetoplevel
ofbasecourseonthesidesofroadshoulders.Itshallbeleveled,
shaped(1:6ratios)andcompactedto90%maximumdrydensity.
c)TackCoat:
i)Thematerial(whichshallbeprimarilyapproved)shallbeappliedat
therateof0.3to0.6lit/sq.matthetemperaturenotexceeding54C
abovethebinderandatwherethereisajointwithexistingasphalt
surface.
ii)Thesurfaceshallbecuredfortheperiodaspermanufacturers
recommendationsuntilatackysurfaceisvisible.
d)WearingCourse:
i)Thehotasphaltmixshallbespreadoverthecuredsurfaceoftack
coatbyautomaticasphaltpavertotherequiredprofileandthickness.
ii)Themixshallbecompactedassoonaspossibleafterspreadingthe
material.Tandemrollershallfollowthelayingoperationtocarryout
breakdownrollinguptoatemperatureof110120C.
SelfpropelledrollersandTandemrollersshallfollowthebreakdown
rollingandsufficientpassesshallbemadetoachievetherequired
compaction.
Rollingshallstartfromthesidesandproceedtowardthecenter.Each
tripoftherollershalloverlaptheprevioustripbyatleast30cm.
Rollerwheelsshallbekeptmoistened.Therollershallbecapableof
reversingwithoutbacklashandshallbefreefromwornparts.Heavy
tandemroller(CC41)shallbeusedtocompleteallrollingincluding
eliminationofwavescausedbythelighterrollersFullcompactionshall
beobtainedbeforetheasphalttemperaturereaches80C.Compaction
shallbeinaccordancewithspecificationofrelevantstandard.
iii)Trafficshallnotbeallowedonthislayeruntilitisproperlycooled,a
minimumperiodof12hoursshallbeconsideredafterthecompletionof
therolling.
iv)Thetestholesshallmemadegoodwithhotasphaltmixand

compactedusingMarshalHammer.
InspectionandTesting:
TestingshallbeconductedbyCompanysthirdpartysitelaboratory.
RelevantQCrecordsshallberaisedbyCivilConstructionContractors

ControlPlanofAsphaltWork.
