Sports medicine is not described as such, neither in ancient nor

in modern medicine.
It is the application of various medical principles to the sports

activities, physical exercise and performance endeavors.

It is related to the physiological as well as patho-physiological

aspects of sports and athletics injuries.

It is not only prevention and treatment of injuries, but it is a

scientific investigation of training methods and practices in

sports also.

Ayurveda offers comprehensive approach to the

science of life and health care.

Ayurveda can also fulfill the need of sports medicine

up to certain extent.
There are a lot of knowledge available to practice

different treatment modalities for injuries, uses of

drugs & dietetics as well as practices of rehabilitation.

There are elaborate description of Vyaayaama (Exercise)

including its benefits, indications and contraindications.

Concepts of sports injuries and their management can be

spotted in Ayurvedic Samhitas like Bhagna (fractures & dislocations),

Vrana (wounds)
Vranashotha (inflammatory conditions)
Sadyovrana (acute wounds) etc.
Snayugata Vaata (Tendon & Ligament injury)

Descriptions of Vaata Vyaadhi (Chronic & Painful conditions)

related to musculoskeletal and neuro-motor system.

Roots of many branches of sports medicine can be traced

in literatures of Ayurveda*.
