AN

EARTHQUAKE CATALOG FOR ECUADOR

The construction of the present unified earthquake catalog, covering 5 centuries is
described in the following publication:
Beauval C., H. Yepes, P. Palacios, M. Segovia, A. Alvarado, Y. Font, J. Aguilar, L. Troncoso,
and S. Vaca (2013). An earthquake catalog for seismic hazard assessment in Ecuador,
Bull. Seism. Soc. Am., v. 103, p. 773-786, doi:10.1785/0120120270.
The 2013 version of the catalog is now available online (give link).
The earthquake catalogs used in these study are the result of years of hard work of
seismologists, engineers and technicians, at the Geophysical Institute in Quito, the
International Seismological Centre (ISC), the National Earthquake Information Center
(NEIC), and at other institutions (see all the sources in Beauval et al. 2013).

Please report to us any remark you would have to help improve this catalog, as well as
any potential error you would identify. Our aim is to update the catalog regularly.

The relocation of 13 years of local seismicity recorded by the Geophysical Institute was
performed by Font et al. and is described in this publication:
Font, Y., Segovia, M., Vaca, S. and Theunissen, T.: Seismicity patterns along the
Ecuadorian subduction zone: new constraints from earthquake location in a 3-D a priori
velocity model, Geophysical Journal International, 193(1), 263286,
doi:10.1093/gji/ggs083, 2013.
The unified catalog includes around 30 historical earthquakes. The study on the
derivation of earthquake parameters from historical intensities is detailed in this
publication (and completed in the BSSA 2013 paper):
Beauval C., H. Yepes, W. Bakun, J. Egred, A. Alvarado and J-C. Singaucho (2010).
Locations and magnitudes of historical earthquakes in the Sierra of Ecuador (1587-
1996), Geophys. J. Int., DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-246X.2010.04569.x

Important notes:
1) this catalog has been automatically generated through a selection scheme,
nonetheless for a few events, the location published in a paper or a report was judged
superior to the solution proposed in the instrumental catalogs explored. In such case,
the publication or the report are indicated in the column srcloc. Details on these
references are included in the Beauval et al. BSSA 2010 and 2013 papers. The rest of the
sources for location and magnitude could be found in the catalogs of origin.
Swenson corresponds to Swenson and Beck 1996 publication
Mendoza to Mendoza and Dewey 1984
Woodwar to Woodward-Clyde 1981 (see Beauval et al. 2010, Table 1)
EPNrep to EPN report (see Beauval et al. 2010, Table 1)
2) The locations with source FONT have been published previously in Font et al. (2013).
If interested in this specific catalog, please refer to the authors.

3) For some small magnitude events, the depth in the FONT solution is indicated as
<5, which means that the depth of the event is lower than 5, but is not exactly
determined. This will be corrected soon.
