CHAPTER I

Introduction
Why study about attitude? Or rather why not? What makes up an attitude? A 100
points based on the alphabet scoring? Or is it a hundred percent based from experiences
and quotes from authors, some infamous or from some anonymous? Famous lines and
quotes, who was the one that made the perfect definition of the word? Well, the definition
of the word according to Webster (our friendly source of definition that can be a
handheld) is that the word attitude was originally from French, from Italian attitudine,
literally aptitude, from Late Latin aptitudin- aptitude fitness. Attitude is a noun and it
means: a) the way you think and feel about someone or something, b) a feeling or way of
thinking that affects a persons behavior, c) a way of thinking and behaving that people
regard as unfriendly, rude, etc. And so it means that attitude is not about one hundred
percent excellent behavior. It also refers to the not so good behavior of a person. As a
whole attitude defines a person but does not judges the totality of a person.
Now, let us answer the question why study about attitude. Today, the rise of
technology has evolved and netizens from the earlier era or the late 1980s and below
have said that the nurses today and the other entity of this generation have become
techies, less values on communication and less caring attitude. This generation, according
to them has evolved into materialistic people (well, sort of, I guess). Their attitude is very
much different from the past generation where our parents, grandparents and our great
grandparents have existed.
Studying about the attitude more specifically on the private and public hospital
staff is definitely an intriguing one. This is based from the reason that attitude is not the

basis for morals or ethics but the opinions that each one of us have. Attitude could be one
hundred percent, one hundred percent positive or it could also be one hundred percent
negative. But the thing is that we value the people around us, we care for them and we
wanted to offer a helping hand. That became the basis for a hundred percent positive
attitude. And that became the start of a caring healthcare system that helps in the recovery
of the patients in the hospital or even in the community.
The researchers of this paper have opted to study the difference between the
attitude of the private and public hospital staff. As professionals, or the so-called
registered nurses, we are expected to monitor our behavior and possessed the best
positive attitude to help our patients attain their equilibrium. Nursing practitioners, much
like other professionals, have unique binding values, attitudes and behaviors. This paper
outlines the attitude and their significance to nursing practitioners in their daily practice.
Theories will be used as basis for this study. Madeleine Leiningers theory of transcultural nursing and Hildegard Peplau's interpersonal theory of nursing would be a great
help in preceding this research. Also, according to Fry, Veatch & Taylor (2010) that
personal values, such as respect, responsibility, and obligation are dependent on the moral
attitude of the nurses. Professional attitudes in nursing comprise of inclinations, feelings
and emotions that conform to their principles and serve as the basis for their behavior.
Professional behavior or behavioral professionalism however is behaving in a manner to
achieve optimal outcomes in professional tasks and interactions. The attitudes of the
hospital staff becomes the foundation and serves as the basis for growth of
professionalism despite the era or the generation that we are now.

Nurses hold a personal belief in service to the public. They therefore believe that
their professional practice is indispensable to society and are inclined to do their best.
They provide services wholeheartedly with little focus on the financial benefits but rather
on making the society a better place to live in. Nurses must possess a sense of calling to
the field to carry out their duties appropriately. This field requires full dedication to
patients regardless of extrinsic rewards. Their selfless activities during emergency
situations where they commit themselves to alleviating suffering of victims are enough
evidence to this.
This study aims to encourage change in case of finding faults or flaws in the
behavior of hospital staff among the private and public hospitals. This study does not
ridicule our professionals but rather aims to help in improving our service in the
healthcare delivery system. Attitude is definitely an important factor to define a persons
well being. But it is more important to hold an attitude that will help cheer someone, that
will bequeaths an optimistic outcome and not something that will steal someone elses
happiness and degrade someones self-esteem. Attitude will always score one hundred
based on the alphabet (A-1, T-20, T-20, I-9, T-20, U-21, D-4, E-5) and the researchers
hope to make it a one hundred percent positive attitude with this study.

Research Objectives:
This study aims to come across the following objectives:

will be rendered by each staff nurses especially with the two hospitals involved in this
study.
To the Future Researchers, the study will help them to dig further the study. It
will also lead them to new ideas to continue this study as well as to improve it. The result
of this study will offer insights to have a better outcome.

Scope and Limitations

The scope of the study is to know the job attitudes of hospital staff as basis for
enhancement training program.

This study will be limited to the responses made by the twenty selected hospital
staff of the Soler General Hospital and Luisiana District Hospital respectively. The
selection of respondents is based from the duty hospital staffs in their corresponding
hospital in Sariaya, Quezon and Luisiana, Laguna during their lunch breaks since it is the
longest possible time uniform to the researchers and the respondents. These staffs will
serve as the respondents to the questionnaires which are composed of statements
extracted from the concepts of job attitudes. Only the job attitudes-related questions are
reflected on the said questionnaires.
