Everyday Dialogues
Dialogue Reading
Read the dialogue with your partner a few times. Take turns being each character.
Practice your intonation and pronunciation. Write down any new words or phrases.

Clerk:

What can I do for you today?

New Immigrant:

I need to apply for a health card.

Clerk:

Did you bring two pieces of ID?

New Immigrant:

Yes, I have my drivers license and my birth certificate.

Clerk:

Great. Do you have a proof of address with you?

New Immigrant:

Um. I have a bill for my hydro.

Clerk:

That will do. Have a seat and fill out these forms. Please print clearly. Do you need a
pen?

New Immigrant:

Yes, please. Should I bring this back to you when Im done?

Clerk:

No. Here is your number. When your number is called, go to the designated counter.

New Immigrant:

Okay. How long is the wait?

Clerk:

The estimated wait is about half an hour.

New Immigrant:

Thats not too bad.

Clerk:

Its not too busy today. If you have any questions about the form, please let me
know.

These are suggestions. Your students may choose other words that fit.
Applicant: Hello. Id like to get a library card.
Librarian: Great. Are you a local resident?
Applicant: Yes. I moved to this town last week.
Librarian: Welcome! Ill need to see your proof of address. Do you have something with your current address
on it?
Applicant: Hmm. I didnt change my drivers license yet.
Librarian: What about a telephone or hydro bill?
Applicant: I have a cable bill. Will that do?!

Librarian: Yes, that will do. Ill also need to see one piece of photo ID (or identification).
Applicant: I can show you my health card.
Librarian: Perfect. I just need you to fill out this form.
Applicant: Do you have a pen that I can borrow?
Librarian: Sure. Why dont you have a seat? Come back to this counter when youre done filling out the form.

Spelling Note: This lesson shows the American spelling of the words Practice (Noun or Verb) and License (N or V).
Most other English-speaking countries spell these words this way: Practice (N), Practise (V), Licence (N), and
License (V). Make it a challenge for your students to find these words in the lesson and see if they know the alternate
spellings. Have them try to identify the part of speech (Noun or Verb) in each instance.
