GENERAL DES CRIPTION

Level Monitoring Probe
BEDIA probes are designed to monitor the level of water, oil and other liquids with similar
thermal conductivities. They are used in engines, commercial vehicles, boats, generators,
compressors etc. to monitor the coolant, oil and fuel levels. In boats they are also used to
monitor the supply and sewage tanks as well as bilge water.
BEDIA probes are very reliable and are easy to use in automatic filling systems, e. g. motor
oil supply and fuel tanks etc.
The BEDIA probes offer the benefit of sensing critical operating conditions at a much earlier
stage than the pressure-operated switches or thermal detectors used today for monitoring
engines. Thermal detectors often respond too late because the medium being monitored is
no longer present and the temperature rise is not transmitted to the sensor. Pressureoperated switches will indicate only when there is hardly any oil left, i. e. too late for the
engine.
The BEDIA Level Monitoring Probe, however, will respond before the oil level is low enough
to damage the engine.
A distinct advantage of the BEDIA level monitoring probes over floatswitches is their
compact design and high resistance vibration. As they do not contain any moving parts, their
performance cannot be impaired by dirt or metal particles in suspension in the fluid. The
BEDIA probes also do not pass current through the medium. The sensor, being isolated,
eliminates the possibility of electrolysis in the system.
Technical description
The BEDIA level monitoring probes operate on the principle of electrical capacitance
changes arising when an electrode surrounded by air is immersed in liquid. This capacitance
change causes an electric circuit to oscillate, switching the output transistor off. The use of
latest state-of-the-art hybrid technology allows the sensor and the electronic circuitry to be
enclosed in a single sealed unit.
The output signal will be completed as soon as the sensor emerges from the medium when
minimum level is monitored, or as soon as it is immersed in the medium when maximum
level is monitored. A load of 1 A (with 12 V = 12 W, with 24 V = 24W) may be connected to
this pole. To connect larger electrical loads, it is necessary to interconnect a relay. A freewheeling diode has to be built at the loads to protect it from overvoltage as caused by
inductive loads (see technical data). The output signal is delayed in order to prevent false
indication when the liquid is temporarily above or below the set limit.
Integral control function
The BEDIA probes have an integral control function. When the electrics are switched on,
there is an output signal for 2 seconds, showing that the probe and circuit are working
properly. If there is no output signal, the probe and circuit should be examined. This feature
enables the probes to be checked remotely for correct operation and/or wire break-age.
In complex systems such as in boats, it is often difficult to physically check conventional
probes, floatswitches and their wiring.

Level monitoring in the oil sump

Which are the benefits of a level monitoring system in the oil sump over conventional
pressure and temperature sensors?
Temperature sensors indicate very slowly. When motor oil is lost, e. g. by tubing breakage,
the component temperature can no longer be conducted to the sensors.
The lower limit value of oil pressure switches or sensors is set low (low oil pressure, with the
motor running at no load). At rated motor speed and with too little oil in the oil circuit an oil-air
mixture may be produced without that a signal is put out. The components are no longer
sufficiently cooled and lubricated.
In the two events described above, the output signal is available either too late or even not at
all so that the motor will be damaged. The level monitoring system, however, indicates even
before the oil level becomes too low, i. e. as soon as the oil level has fallen 10 to 20 mm
below the minimum marking on the dipstick. Oil pressure and oil temperature indication is
always ensured.

Installation instructions
1.

Drain the motor oil.

2.

Secure the adjustable elbow coupling with the tubing and the sensor support at the
motor. The sensor housing should be adjustable through oblong holes to determine the
minimum point.

3.

Install the ventilation for the crankcase (e. g. inspection hole cover).

4.

Install and connect the sensor.

5.

Check for correct electrical function. The minimum sensor must indicate now.

6.

Refill the oil up to the minimum marking on the dipstick.

7.

Move the sensor and support slowly down until the signal is no longer available. The
switch point of the sensor is now exactly at the minimum oil level of the motor.

8.

Move the sensor down by another 10 to 20 mm and fix it. The signal oil level too low
will now be put out when the level is approx. 10 to 20 mm below the minimum marking
on the dipstick.

Probes operating on the capacitive principle

This probe is self-adjustable and can be used for liquids including high viscosity media and
powders.
Short description
This BEDIA-Level Sensor is suitable for liquids, including high viscosity media and powders.
It operates on the principle of electrical capacitance changes arising when an electrode
surrounded by air is immersed in a media. This capacitance change causes an electric
circuit to oscillate, thus switching the output transistor off. The use of latest state-of-the-art
hybrid technology allows the probe and the electronic circuitry to be enclosed in a single
sealed unit.
Application
The BEDIA -Level Sensor with its large temperature range and wide sensitivity adjusting
range is suitable for a wide spread of applications: process control, petrochemical industry,
tank level monitoring, bottle and crate washing systems in breweries, etc.
Operating modes
Minimum switching: Normally the sensing probe is immersed and the green LED indicates.
As the level drops below the probe the green LED extinguishes.
Maximum switching: Normally the sensing probe is not immersed and the green LED
indicates. As the level rises above the probe the green LED extinguishes.

Installation
To avoid distributions caused of different installations, the level sensor has to be justed in
installed condition and with the medium controlled at a ambient and medium temperature of
approx. + 23C.

Install the Level Sensor.

Loosen cable gland (PG7), unscrew housing cover.
Feed the cable through these two parts. Connect the cable according to the connection
diagram (the cover is now loosely attached to the cable).
Set the changeover switch either to minimum switching or maximum switching :
1 = Minimum
2 = Maximum
Check that the supply voltage corresponds to the value shown on the Level Sensor and
connect power supply (red LED indicates).
The sensing probe must be thoroughly cleaned !
The unit must be re-adjusted for different media.
Increase the medium level so as to partly cover the sensing probe. Leave only
approximately 2 to 3 mm clear in case of high viscosity media.
The level sensor can be justed with a screw-driver.

Maximum sensor
Green LED indicates (The sensor is not sensitive enough):
turn the potentiometer slowly (response delay!) to the right (+)
until the LED extinguishes. The sensor is now adjusted.
Green LED does NOT indicate (The sensor is too sensitive):
turn the potentiometer slowly (response delay!) to the left (-) until the LED indicates.
Then turn slowly to the right (+) until the LED extinguishes. The sensor is now adjusted.
Minimum sensor
Green LED does NOT indicate (The sensor is not sensitive enough):
turn the potentiometer slowly (response delay!) to the right (+) until the LED indicates.
The sensor is now adjusted.
Green LED indicates (The sensor is too sensitive):
turn the potentiometer slowly (response delay!) to the left (-) until the LED extinguishes.
Then turn slowly to the right (+) until the LED indicates. The sensor is now adjusted.

Verify the adjustment as follows

Immerse the probe several times in the medium until there is some deposit on the front
or top of the probe (with high viscosity media).
Maximum sensor: slowly drop the medium level. The green LED should indicate as
soon as the probe is no longer immersed.
Minimum sensor: slowly increase the medium level. The green LED should indicate
as soon as the probe is fully immersed.
Clean the probe if another adjustment is necessary.
Replace cover (K) and tighten the PG cable gland (PG7).

The sensor is now ready for use.
