4. With the engine stopped and the ignition switched off, disconnect the b+/30 lead from
the diode board.
5. Connect a voltmeter set to read over 15 volts between the b+/30 diode board
terminal and the alternator or earthed brush terminal (can be marked as d+ or d- on
either the alternator or in the wiring diagrams).
6. Start the engine . at just over idle speed a reading of 13.55-14.25 volts should be
obtained. Stop the engine. If a significantly lower reading is obtained check the
alternator.
7. Reconnect the b+/30 lead to diode board, the connect the voltmeter first between the
diode board d+ (it may be more convenient to make the connection at the regulator d+
terminal if the back of the diode board cannot be reached) terminal and a good earth
point on the frame. Start the engine and repeat the test between the b+/30 terminal and
earth.
8. If a difference in voltage of up to 0.5 volts is found, the regulator is faulty. If the
difference is between 1.5-4.0 volts the diode board is at fault.
ALTERNATOR AND REGULATOR QUICK TEST.
9. This test should only be carried out if the charge warning light remains permanently
on while the engine is running.
10. Remove the fuel tank and front engine is running.
11. With the engine stopped and the ignition switched off disconnect the regulator threepin plug. Using a spare length of wire connect the d+ (blue wire) to the df (blue/black
wire) terminals on the plug.
12. Start the engine and increase speed to 1000-2000 rpm. If the charge warning light
goes out, the regulator is faulty, if is stays on, the alternator is faulty.
