er is convinced my 72-year-
old dad has early stage
Alzheimer's disease. He has
gotten more scattered and
forgetful in recent years and
is a little more irritable, but I
don’t think it’s anything seri-
ous. My question is what are
the signs of Alzheimer’s and
what resources are available
to help me learn more?

Dear Prudent,
Lots of seniors, like your
mother, worry about memory
lapses or confusion as they
get older, fearing it may be
the first signs of Alzheimer’s
disease or some other type
of dementia. But the real-
ity is few seniors (less than
14 percent of those over age
70) ever develop it. Here are
some warning signs that
can help you spot a poten-
tial problem, and some re-
sources to help if you do.
What’s not normal?
Forgetfulness, confusion
and irritably are things ev-
eryone experiences from
time-to-time but it doesn’t
necessarily mean we’re de-
veloping Alzheimer’s dis-
ease. Or does it? Knowing
the early warning signs is a
good first step in recogniz-
ing the difference between
normal age-related memory
loss and a more serious prob-
lem. To help you evaluate
your dad’s condition, here’s
a checklist of questions to
ask yourself:
■ Does he often repeat
himself or ask the same
questions over and over?
■ Is he more forgetful, or
is he having trouble with
short-term memory?
■ Does he need remind-
ers to do things like chores,
shopping or taking medi-
cine?
■ Does he forget appoint-
ments, family occasions or
holidays?
■ Does he seem sad or
down in the dumps more of-
ten than in the past?
■ Has he started having
trouble doing calculations,
managing finances or bal-
ancing the checkbook?
■ Has he lost interest in
his activities such as hob-
bies, reading, attending
church or other social activi-
ties?
■ Has he become more
irritable, agitated or suspi-
cious than usual?
■ Are you concerned about
his driving, for example get-
ting lost or driving unsafe-
ly?
■ Does he have trouble
finding the words he wants

and friends. You can make
sure that the turkey you
serve produces only compli-
ments, and not complaints,
by following four simple
steps to food safety: clean,
separate, cook and chill.
Before you begin working
with poultry, or any poten-
tially hazardous food item, a
primary rule of food safety is
to keep everything clean by
washing hands with warm/
hot soapy water before pre-
paring food and after your
hands have come in contact
with raw turkey.
After purchasing, take
your turkey home and store
it in the freezer or the re-
frigerator. Never store the
turkey on the countertop or
any other place where the
temperature reaches above

careful inspection, a good
husbandman can recognize
when an animal is sick. This

Examine your animals
daily. Note how much food

of waste. Color, fur condition,
breathing, nasal discharges
and ear carriage are indica-
tions of health.
Isolate sick animals until
they recover. Do not handle
sick animals until after
you’ve cared for the healthy
ones.
Dispose of all dead ani-
mals. Thoroughly clean and
disinfect all contaminated
hutches and equipment as
soon as possible.

prefer a bait setting on or
close to bottom. This time,
the better approach was to
yo-yo the rod, working the
bait vertically up from bot-
tom a foot or two, then slow-
ly lower the bait to bottom.
Many of the strikes occurred
as baits were falling. Just as
predicted, in a couple hours,
we were heading back to the
cleaning station with just
over 100 yellow bass, 200 fil-
lets, the makings of several
tasty fried fish dinners!
Regardless where you live,
chances are very good that
there is an excellent out-
doors getaway not far from
home. Hopefully you can set
aside two or three days to
spend with your family in
the near future. I can guar-
antee it will be time well
spent.

Depending on your fami-
ly’s lifestyle, the responsibil-
ity of taking care of a cat or
dog may be too time consum-
ing. Left with the desire for
a pet but time constraints
that aren’t conducive to
a cat or dog, some people
think that getting a “pocket
pet”, reptile, or another ex-
otic animal might seem like
the right solution.
Unfortunately, if you have
small children exotic pets
can be dangerous to your
family’s health.
“Pocket pets” are small
animals, often rodents that
can fit into your pocket such
as: hamsters, hedgehogs,
mice, rats, and gerbils.
Though they are slight
larger, guinea pigs also fall
under the “pocket pet” cat-
egory. Other exotic pets
that people often turn to
for companionship include
baby chickens, baby ducks,
and reptiles such as lizards,
snakes, iguanas and turtles.
“If you have kids under
the age of 5, you should be
extremely careful if you elect
to have exotic pets in your
home,” said Dr. Sharman
Hoppes, an assistant clinical
professor at the Texas A&M
University College of Vet-
erinary Medicine and Bio-
medical Sciences. “Reptiles,
‘pocket pets’, baby chicks
and ducks are not always
in the best health when we
acquire them, making these
animals more prone to shed-
ding Salmonella.”
According to The Depart-
ment of Human Health’s
Web site, Salmonella is
a bacteria that is passed
from the feces of people or
animals to other people or
animals. Symptoms of a Sal-
monella infection include di-
arrhea, fever, and abdominal
cramps 12 to 72 hours after

exposure. In severe cases,
the infected individual may
be hospitalized for dehydra-
tion.
Furthermore, if the infec-
tion spreads from the intes-
tines into the blood stream
and is not treated prop-
erly, Salmonella can cause
death.
“As adults, we tend to be
more hygienic then children,
meaning we are less likely
to contract Salmonella from
exotic pets,” Hoppes said.
“Children however, are
constantly putting their
hands in their mouths and
often do not wash their
hands after handling these
animals, which puts them at
greater risk for infection.”
In addition to lacking the
proper hygiene practices of
adults, kids are also more
likely to get scratched or bit-
ten by exotic pets.
“This is primarily due to
the fact that children often
do not know how to prop-
erly handle exotic pets. Not
using the proper handling
techniques for these animals
can cause them stress, mak-
ing them more likely to bite
or scratch. These wounds
create a point of entry for
bacteria,” said Hoppes.
Because of the risk of con-
tracting a Salmonella infec-
tion from an exotic pet, it is
important to make sure our
animals are healthy when
we get them and that we
maintain our pet’s health.
“Anyone adopting exotic
pets should take the animal
to a qualified veterinarian
for a wellness examination,”
said Hoppes. “Make sure
your animal is healthy and
not under stress from lack of
proper care and poor nutri-
tion. Stressed animals are
more prone to bacterial in-
fections.”
“Not all veterinarians
are equipped to treat exotic
pets,” Hoppes said. “If your
veterinarian is not able to
care for your pet, ask for a
referral to one who can.”
Once you find a veterinar-
ian that treats exotic ani-
mals, Hoppes recommends
asking them about the prop-
er husbandry and nutrition
for your pet.
“Animal husbandry re-
fers to the proper way to
take care of your species of
animal. Animal husbandry
includes how to house your
pet properly, and special
needs they may have as far
as temperature, humidity,
and lighting. Proper nutri-
tion includes type of food or
diet, how frequently to feed,
and the amount that should
be fed,” Hoppes said.
Making sure your pet
maintains good health and
employing proper animal
husbandry and nutrition
can help reduce the risk of
the animal carrying an in-
fection, and thus lessen you
and your family’s chances of
contracting an illness from
your exotic pet.
To further reduce the
chance of infection from
exotic pets, Hoppes recom-
mends the following:
■ Always wash your hands
and your child’s hands after
handling an animal.
■ Children handling pets
should be under constant
supervision.
■ Keep the animals out of
your kitchen and bathroom.
(Don’t let your iguana soak
in the sink or bathtub)
■ Do not let your exotic
pet have free roam of your
house; this is dangerous for
both you and them.
■ Teach your children to
avoid approaching exotic
animals outdoors and avoid

TEXAS HEALTH MATTERS Got stuff? Get rid of it quick...

Being young is no piece of
cake these days. And it can
be even tougher for youth
who are “aging out” of foster
care. With no birth families
to rely on, they often lack
adult support in making
grown-up plans and deci-
sions in areas such as edu-
cation, finances, health and
housing.
To help these young Tex-
ans with their transition to
adulthood, the Texas De-
partment of Family and Pro-
tective Services (DFPS) has
launched www.texasyouth-
connection.org, a one-stop
online shop on topics such
as school, health, employ-
ment and finances.
“We’re always looking for
new ways to help our youth,”
said DFPS’ Candice Holmes.
“After discussions with fos-
ter youth, it was clear we
needed an easy-to-read Web
site specifically designed to
help them cut through the
bureaucracy.”
DFPS staff conducted sev-
eral informal focus group
sessions with foster youth
over pizza and soft drinks.
Together, they viewed simi-
lar Web sites from other
states, as well as other sites
aimed at youth. Agency
staff listened to the kids’
ideas and suggestions, then
incorporated them into the
Web site. Even the domain
name was chosen by the fo-
cus group.
Holmes said the Web site
is designed so youth can
give input, request improve-
ments and make contribu-
tions. All of the youth who
helped plan the site were
enrolled in the agency’s
Preparation for Adult Living
(PAL) program, which helps
educate and prepare them
for independence from the
state’s care and support.
The site is divided into
more than a dozen catego-
ries such as education, fi-
nances, health and housing.
Subtopics include enrolling
in college, finding state and
local services, job searching,
planning a budget and es-
tablishing credit, and even
choosing a used car and pur-
chasing auto insurance.
The site also lets youth
sign up for e-mail alerts
from the agency about foster
care issues.
Caroline Bogues, a former
foster youth, described the
final product as both infor-
mative and useful. “Under
the education section, I liked
the fact that there’s such
diverse information about
scholarships,” Bogues said.
“The budget information is
helpful to young people go-
ing to college. I wish there’d
been a Web site like this
when I was in foster care.”
Bogues now works for
CPS’s Education and Train-
ing Voucher program, which
provides postsecondary edu-
cational and training vouch-
ers to eligible youth who are
in or age out of foster care,
or who are adopted from
foster care after turning 16
years old.
Holmes said the key to
the Web site’s success is ac-

Showers meets Buddy and
is drawn to him and his fam-
ily. The ex-preacher tries to
help the boy overcome his
fear of water but runs into
the will of the community
who want him to stay and
become a pastor again and
who consider the boy to be
dangerous. The two out-
casts find a common bond
and help each other search
for “divine” truth, faith and
hope.
The Diviners is a heart-
warming look at the strug-
gles of rural people to make
sense of a world turned up-
side down.
This play is recommend-
ed for mature audiences.

The Northwest High School football team battles beneath the stars
of Texas Stadium Saturday in the Class 5A UIL state playoffs. The
Texan defense was in top form once again, but it was not enough
to get past the Coppell Cowboys in a 31-17 loss. Right, Brysen
Curb tries to escape the pressure of the Coppell defense. Below,
the Northwest cheerleaders had plenty to cheer about this season
as they kept the school spirit alive in another playoff season.
