Car Barn Museum

Grand Opening
The Nelson Electric Tramway Society

(NETS) are ready to officially open their
latest project, the Car Barn Museum. On
Monday, August 3 they are inviting the
entire community to come on down from
11 am to 4:30 pm with free streetcar rides
and museum admission. At 1 pm there will
be a special Grand Opening Ceremony with
ribbon cutting, tours, cake, refreshments,
classic cars and special guests.
NETS have been working toward this
goal ever since they rolled out Streetcar #23
in 1992. The idea was to create a working
museum of Nelsons history. The first phase
of this project was to get Nelsons original
streetcar operational and then over time create additional
opportunities to enrich and educate the community. The
goal of NETS recent history was to create a dedicated
space for displays and historical artifacts. Over the past
two years the Car Barn, with the help and love of volunteers, has been renovated to include a dedicated museum

Over the years, many artifacts and photos have been
entrusted to the society by community members who
wished to keep Nelsons streetcar heritage alive for future
generations. The museum project has given the society an
opportunity to present these items to the public. The artifacts are now housed in a dedicated museum space with
additional equipment displayed throughout the car barn.

Taking place August 8 and 9, from 10 am to 5 pm, the

Columbia Basin Culture Tour allows you to explore artists studios, museums, art galleries and heritage sites.
Travel to studios and archives that arent normally open
during this free, self-guided event. See demonstrations,
new exhibitions and collections or meet people behind

The Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre preserves
and dynamically presents the heritage of Rossland and

Joining the tour this year are Wendy Morrison (Artlink)

garden to see Wendys bronze sculptures inspired by the
country life in Alberta and her jewellery, with its broad

and stone sculpture, silver and goldsmithing, drawings

At TRBy Hand working studio is textile artist Tricia
Rasku who works with natural materials in all media. Her
weaving is bright and colourful, ranging from cotton towels to clothing, wraps and rugs, primarily of wool with forays into silk and exotics. Felting ranges from light scarves
and shawls to sculptural pieces, rugs, and blankets. Tricia
also makes handmade, mild soap with essential oils.

Last spring, Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation

focused their fundraising efforts on a vital piece of equipment for the operating room (OR) a new surgical table.
CIBC had already made a generous donation to the campaign when they learned that the foundation was just shy
$2040 of their $40,000 goal. To help complete the campaign, CIBC generously contributed the additional funds
to assist with purchasing the vital piece of equipment.

At CIBC we are thrilled to support such important services for this community, said John Egyed, district vice
president, South Okanagan/Kootenay, CIBC. We are
proud to support the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation purchase state of the art medical equipment which
will ensure that the people of Nelson and the surrounding
area receive the best medical and patient care possible.
The surgical table is where patients are placed for their
surgery and the new table will support improved care for
the procedures performed at KLH. OR nurse Sue Basek
says, The surgical table is the most important piece of
equipment in the OR. Its used for almost every procedure
we perform, including obstetric, gynaecologic and orthopaedic procedures.
The Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation is governed by

Christian Fellowship in support of Our Daily Bread. It is

on the table at Our Daily Bread.
The cause:
Our Daily Bread is Nelsons only hot lunch program,
operating five days a week from 11 am to 1 pm. Each day
we provide hot, nutritious meals to more than 90 members of our community. Many of our guests are homeless,
at risk of homelessness, seniors, mentally ill or are among
the working poor. The meal we provide is often the only
meal they will eat for the day.

Stephen (Steve) Shawn May passed away suddenly and peacefully
from natural causes. Steve leaves his mother Mary Glen of Nelson,
daughter Tash (Mike) Biscaro and granddaughter Taylor of Ontario,
son Ryan of Ontario, brother Jim (Cathy) of Nelson, aunt Lorraine (Red)
of Nelson, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his brother Peter of Penticton.
Steve was a life-long Nelson resident and general guy about town. He
enjoyed time with friends, had a ready laugh and was willing to share it.
Cremation has taken place. The family will host a celebration of life
with place and time to be announced.

experience! It travels along the old CP Rail line from the
Paulson Detour Road to the Celgar mill parking lot. It is an
incredibly scenic four to five hour ride with trestles, tunnels,
and spectacular views from high above the Arrow Lake.
We provide transportation for you and your bicycle and
will pick you up at one of two locations: KCF parking lot,
520 Falls Street in Nelson at 7 am, or 1801 Connors Road
(Castlegar Christian Fellowship) in Castlegar at 8:15 am.
Please bring your own water bottle, snacks, and lunch for
the day. You will also want a flashlight as there is a long,
dark tunnel on route. Helmets are mandatory. We have a
support vehicle that travels with us in the event that anyone needs assistance. At the end of the ride, we will provide a hot meal as part of your registration cost.
The registration fee is $70. If you prefer, you can raise
pledges for Our Daily Bread. If you raise $125 or more
in financial support, your registration fee will be waived.

Crescent Valley Beach Gets An Upgrade
The RDCK will be upgrading the parking lot at Crescent

Valley Beach over the next month. During this time the
present parking lot will be closed periodically for work.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation,
Yellowhead Road and Bridge and Selkirk Paving, the lot
will be upgraded in conjunction with paving on Highway 6. To facilitate the work the lot will be closed on days
when work will occur.
This is phase one of two to create the parking lot for
the popular regional park. The design is from the Crescent Valley Beach Park Management Plan process. The
first phase will develop the entry into the park, 14 parking
stalls and a drop-off/pick-up area. Phase 2 will develop an
additional approximately 45 parking and two RV parking
spaces.
The present historic parking situation is dangerous,
says Walter Popoff, Area H Director. Completing both
phases of the parking lot will make visiting Crescent Valley beach much safer.

the management plan for Crescent Valley Beach. The draft

Shadow
Shadow is a female 1.5-year-old domestic short hair cat with a shiny black
coat. She was brought in to the BC SPCA Nelson branch as a stray.
Shadow was quite fearful upon arrival, likely having had little contact with
people previously. After some time of hand feeding and gentle petting, she
has become more relaxed about interacting with people and, while still a
little nervous when approached, actually enjoys being petted now. Shadow
would likely make a great mouser and potentially, once she feels more
comfortable, an excellent lap warmer!
Shadow would do best in a home that can provide her with a quiet area
she feels safe in while she settles in. Her caregivers would need to have
time to help socialize Shadow to help bring her out of her shell. If you think
Shadow is the companion for you, come meet her at the BC SPCA Nelson
