Guardian Title Company is under new ownership!
Guardian Title Company has been a part of Wise County since 1974 and provides title closing services for
Realtors, Lenders, Builders, Attorneys and the Public. For years, the company called the downtown Decatur
area home and after a short stint in another location have moved back to their previous location at 200 S. Trin-
ity Street in Decatur. “We feel like we belong downtown and have come home” said Shanna.
The move came with new owners, with familiar faces. Jerrod Mowery and his wife, Shanna Mowery have
teamed up with Phil Adams as the new owners. Shanna has been an employee of Guardian Title for over 11
years and Jerrod is the Texas Sales Manager for Complete Production Services and has worked in the oil and
gas industry for 15 years. They have two daughters, Lauren 16 and Nikki 13. Both play volleyball, basketball
and softball for the Bridgeport Sissies and Lauren is also in the Bridgeport Band. Shanna is the daughter
of Bill Parker and Sherry Parker – Lemon, County Clerk. Jerrod is the son of the late Joe Lynn Mowery and
Darla Bowyer. Phil Adams has been in the title industry for many years and has owned several title compa-
nies. He currently owns Chapin Title Company in Sherman and W.W. Howeth Title Company in Gainesville.

All of the employees at Guardian Title Company have been a part of the company for years and have come to

Dear Neil: Is there any
way to keep squirrels out
of pecan trees? We have a
young tree, and they’re tak-
ing all the pecans.
There are several things
you can do, but it may be
difficult to eliminate them
completely. You can put
sheet metal collars around
their trunks in late summer
and leave them in place all
fall. The squirrels won’t be
able to gain traction to climb
over them. However, if your
pecan touches other trees,
power lines or the roofline,
the squirrels will find the
detour. Humane traps also
work, but they require pa-
tience.
Dear Neil: Why would
Gold Star esperanza bloom,
while the one right beside it
does not?
The worst thing you can
do as a gardener is to com-
pare plants. Just like trying
to figure out why children
behave differently, it will
drive you nuts. Esperanzas
require full sun to bloom
well. They also need to be
growing actively, so be sure
it has adequate root room,
nutrition and moisture.

Devon gets
approval for oil
project
Devon Energy Corpora-
tion has received regulatory
approval for the company’s
second oil sands project in
Canada. The project, called
Jackfish 2, will be fully op-
erational in 2012.
Devon expects the well to
produce about 35,000 bar-
rels of oil per day through
a recovery method known
as Steam Assisted Gravity
Drainage. Over the life of
the project, Devon expects
to recover about 300 million
barrels of oil.

Grandeur Design part of home tour

The Grandeur Design gals
have done it again.
Susan Semmelman and
Brenda Blaylock, owners
of Grandeur Design on the
square in Decatur, teamed
with Grand Home Design
and Glendarroch Homes to
create a home on the 19th
Annual Kaleidoscope of
Homes in Fort Worth that
sold soon after the home
tour opened Aug. 30.
The 7,259-square foot es-
tate, Chateau L’Ecosse, was
priced at $2,199,000. It sold
complete with furnishings.
Grandeur Design was also
involved with a Kaleido-
scope home last year that
sold during the tour, with all
furnishings.
“It is truly a French cha-
teau,” said Semmelman of
this year’s entry. “It has the
most amazing detail and we
were involved in the archi-
tectural design, including
ceiling treatments, all the
tile, countertop selection,
lighting and faux finishing.”
Semmelman pointed out
the faux finishing was done
by another local company,
Classic Wall Design.
She and Blaylock shopped
specifically for the chateau
and their firm made many
of the custom furnishings.
“We used antiques and
high-end reproductions and
went all over looking for
pieces specifically for that
estate,” she said.
Grandeur Design hand-
crafted the dining room
chairs, other chairs and ot-
tomans and fashioned all
the draperies and bedding.
“We made tapestry pillows
and cut up an oriental rug to
make a bench,” Semmelman
added.
Semmelman and Blay-
lock founded Grandeur
Design in 2001. They ex-
panded the business from
1,800 square feet on FM 51
in Decatur to 17,000 square
feet on the Decatur square,
with a workroom in the old
Christian building behind
the square showroom. They
have a staff of upholsterers,
seamstresses, wood carvers
and iron workers.
Semmelman said their
work only looks expensive,
that they can “take any bud-
get and make it amazing.”
“Our motto is, ‘It’s not
about the right place at
the right time but the right
space for the right dime,’”
added Semmelman.
The Kaleidoscope tour is
sponsored by the Greater
Fort Worth Builders Asso-
ciation and benefits Cook
Children’s Medical Center.
The tour runs through Sept.
21, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the
gated community of Mont-
serrat West Fort Worth Es-
tates. Tickets are $12 for
adults and $8 for children
(4-12). Discount tickets are
available at all Tom Thumb
stores.

tures groin vaulted ceilings,
arched details, climate-con-
trolled wine room encased
in a trio of decorative iron
doors, multiple fireplaces,
radiant barreled pub ceiling

LONGTIME SERVICE — Gary Hendrix accepts Strategic

Management Group’s lifetime service award from chief
executive officer Ruth Mansmith in honor of his 35 years
as administrator of Sunny Hills Nursing and Rehab. At the
age of 22, Hendrix was possibly Texas’ youngest home
administrator when he took over management of the Decatur
facility on July 15, 1973, a few months after nursing-home
builder Frank McDonnell opened it. McDonnell sold it to
Strategic Management in 2006. Medical records coordinator
Sissy Allcorn said in her 28 years at Sunny Hills Hendrix has
never lost his focus on making it a better place for both
residents and employees. Added co-worker Tisa Pippin: “His
caring attitude is what has made this a true home for our
residents.” Although a grandfather himself, Hendrix still is
considerably younger than his customers. One described him
as “a nice boy who does what I ask him to do even when
he doesn’t have time. He finds a way.” Hendrix followed in
the footsteps of his father, veteran West-Texas nursing-home
administrator Billy Hendrix, now retired.

Wood dealership notes 30th anniversary Saturday

anniversary celebration

couple is hosting a tradition-
al Texas barbecue, served by
James Wood Motors employ-
ees and volunteers. Wood
veteran Dalton Montgomery
is in charge of the cooking.
The meal will be served
from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
the service drive.
There will be a short rec-
ognition program at 11:30
a.m. Country-and-Western
entertainer Pat Waters will
perform during the meal,

Pediculosis, the infestation of head lice,
is a health problem affecting at least 6
million school children annually in this
country, and it is more prevalent than all
other childhood communicable diseases
combined. Parents should understand
the communicability of head lice, how
to make an accurate identification,
and how to remove head lice and nits
(eggs) from a child in the safest and
most effective ways. An educated
screener can easily detect head lice.
Traditional treatment involves the direct
application of chemicals to the scalp
of infested individuals. The National
Pediculosis Association recommends
regular screenings to control lice
outbreaks in school settings. Screening
is utilized as a prevention strategy to
facilitate early detection and minimize
exposure to potentially toxic chemicals.

As nauseating (literally) as it is to the pregnant women who experience
it, morning sickness may actually serve a useful purpose, according
to researchers delving into the matter. They reason that, if morning
sickness is simply a byproduct of a healthy pregnancy, all women
would have it. Yet, while two-thirds of pregnant women do experience
morning sickness, the rest often carry their pregnancies to term without
experiencing nausea. In addition, morning sickness seems to arise as
a consequence of seeing, smelling, or tasting meats and strong-tasting

microbes or birth-defect-inducing chemicals. Smoking is another trigger.

Guardian Title Company has been a part of Wise County since 1974 and provides title closing services for
Realtors, Lenders, Builders, Attorneys and the Public. For years, the company called the downtown Decatur
area home and after a short stint in another location have moved back to their previous location at 200 S. Trin-
ity Street in Decatur. “We feel like we belong downtown and have come home” said Shanna.
The move came with new owners, with familiar faces. Jerrod Mowery and his wife, Shanna Mowery have
teamed up with Phil Adams as the new owners. Shanna has been an employee of Guardian Title for over 11
years and Jerrod is the Texas Sales Manager for Complete Production Services and has worked in the oil and
gas industry for 15 years. They have two daughters, Lauren 16 and Nikki 13. Both play volleyball, basketball
and softball for the Bridgeport Sissies and Lauren is also in the Bridgeport Band. Shanna is the daughter
of Bill Parker and Sherry Parker – Lemon, County Clerk. Jerrod is the son of the late Joe Lynn Mowery and
Darla Bowyer. Phil Adams has been in the title industry for many years and has owned several title compa-
nies. He currently owns Chapin Title Company in Sherman and W.W. Howeth Title Company in Gainesville.

All of the employees at Guardian Title Company have been a part of the company for years and have come to
