ago, my husband brought
East Texas cane into our
landscape. It has grown very
vigorously, in fact, invasively.
Now it’s coming up in many
places where I don’t want it.
I’ve tried Round Up sprays
at full strength after we cut it
back, but, two months later, it
comes back. We want to build
a new concrete drive, but I’m
afraid the cane will come up
through every crack in the
concrete. Help!
Assuming you have the
true cane (one-inch-wide
leaves), you should be able to
eliminate it with one of the
glyphosates such as Round
Up. Spray when the growth is
3 to 4 feet tall, not right after
you cut it. Be sure the spray

Have you ever seen a Blue-
gray Gnatcatcher? This tiny
songbird is one of the most
hyper creatures I have ever
watched. They bounce ev-
erywhere in the trees, call-
ing buzzy notes and flip-
ping their long tails back
and forth. Even wrens don’t
compare. I think they must
secretly drink lots and lots
of coffee.
Gnatcatchers live and nest
in our area during the spring
and summer. The first buzzy
notes can be heard in mid-
March and they disappear
by early October. “The Birds
of North Central Texas,” by
Warren Pulich, states that
this species is regularly seen
in the winter, but I have nev-
er been fortunate enough to
see one here in that season.
They can also be found some-
times in south Texas and
along the Texas coast during
the winter. The Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher is the only mi-
gratory gnatcatcher; the rest
(which I will mention later)
are permanent residents in
their ranges.
I like to compare gnat-
catchers to mockingbirds.
They both have a long tail,
thin beaks, and a wandering
song. However, gnatcatchers
are tiny — about the size of
a chickadee or a wren. They
also have a blue tint to their
gray plumage. Males have
a white eyering and black
stripe over the eye, giving
them a somewhat grouchy
appearance to match their
complaining calls. Females
also have a white eyering
but lack the black stripe.

to their tail. It has been
speculated that the white
outer tail feathers are used
to scare small insects out for
dinner.
The gnatcatcher’s song
is quite a delight to hear.
It wanders with jumbled
chirps and buzzes and in-
corporates quiet imitations
of other birds’ songs. Once
again, it reminds me slightly
of a mockingbird, although it
lacks the staccato repetition
and organized imitations of
a mockingbird’s song.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was
four years and two months
old.
In our area, the Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher is the only
species to be found. In the
southwest it can be quite dif-
ficult to identify gnatcatcher
species. The eyering, shade
of blue or gray on the back,
and especially the pattern of
black and white on the tail
feathers are used to distin-
guish between California
(a federally threatened spe-
cies), Black-tailed, Black-
capped, and Blue-gray Gnat-
catchers in different areas.
When it’s time for the birds
to molt their tail feathers, it
becomes even more confus-
ing for birders!
The remarkable gnat-
catcher builds a remarkable
nest. It looks like a big hum-
mingbird nest, made of plant
down, oak catkins, and other
plant material, bound to-
gether with spider webs and
covered outside with lichen.
It takes the male and female
a week or two to build this

marvel. It can be placed 3-80
feet up in a tree; I usually
see nests in the treetops.
The four to five eggs are
pale with brown speckles
and incubated for about two
weeks by both parents. Both
parents tend the young for
12-13 days in the nest, and
continue to care for them for
up to almost three weeks af-
ter fledging. If disturbed or if
the nest fails, they will dis-
assemble the nest and reuse
the material in their new at-
tempt.
That’s how gnatcatchers
nest according to the books.
What my books failed to
mention, though, is the ri-
diculous hyperactivity that
we have observed with nest-
ing gnatcatchers. To me, it’s

its and teach our children,
we also have to acknowl-
edge that they will make
mistakes all the same. Ac-
cepting that, and using the
mistake to teach a lesson,
