Hometown Heroes Featured at Milton-Union Library

Milton-Union Public Library believes that Not All Heroes are Fiction! So, during the Summer
Reading Program, along with heroes that can fly or create webs, the library has also been highlighting its
Hometown Heroes. For the past two months, the library has displayed names and photos of West
Miltons Hometown Heroes, as seen hanging from the light poles in town. There are 81 heroes in all with
Milton ties, making this week the last banner. Come in before August 3 to see these heroic faces.
The library is grateful to all of West Miltons Hometown Heroes and their families for their sacrifice
and willingness to serve.
The summer reading program has special programs and prizes for adults, teens, kids, tiny tots, and
inspirational book readers and runs until July 31.

The Miami County Park District will hold its monthly Dog Social on Sunday, Aug. 16, 1-3 p.m., at Stillwater Prairie Reserve,

the park to take part in Hero Dogs. Special guests will be the
Buckeye Search and Rescue Dogs. These animal heroes will

Summer Lunch Program Offered by Greenville Church

A little known resource in Greenville is the summer lunch program at First Presbyterian Church at 114 E. 4th St. FRee, nutritious lunches will be served from 11:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday and
Thursday, Aug. 4 and 6, for youth under 17 years of age and their
parent/guardian.
The menu will be colorful and delicious and topped off with
dessert. Games and videos in a structured environment will follow
the meal for those that want to participate.
There is no paperwork to fill out, but a call to the church office
at 937-548-3188 would be appreciated but not required.
The congregation wants to share present day blessings with the
community. Join other young people in enjoying the good food
and good fun at First Presbyterian Church, located just back of
Second National Bank on 4th St.

Area schools offer free and reduced price meals for students unable
to pay the full price of meals or milk served under the National School
Lunch and School Breakfast Program. All schools have a copy of the policy available for review. Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines will be
used for determining eligibility.
To apply for free and reduced price benefits, households must fill out
an application and return it to their school. A complete application is required. Information provided on applications is confidential and will be
used only for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified
at any time by the school or other program official.
Also, free health care through Medicaid and/or Ohios Healthy Start
and Healthy Families programs is offered to families with children eligible for free or reduced price school meals. Please call 1-800-324-8680

Im telling you this because Sunday night, Ginger and I were guests of Irene Ganger, who now
lives in Mill Ridge Village in Union, Ohio. Irene invited four couples for a cookout and the
chance to catch up on all the worlds problems. We talked about everything from Donald Trump
to enemas.
After dessert of cherry pie, rhubarb dump cake or fresh fruit salad, Irene suggested we clear the
dinning room table and play cards.
David and Bev Nixon were asked to bring their trolley so we could play the game of Four
in comfort with nine people. This card game can be played with any number of participants. You
simply add more cards when you see there isnt enough to go around or to draw from. This is
when you need a homemade trolley to push the cards around the table. Basically, the trolley is a
piece of wood with the cardholders screwed down, and four caster wheels to make it roll with
ease. The Nixons taught Ginger and I, along with Irene, when we visited them in Florida last
winter. Everyone in their park plays four, and the trolleys are made in many different ways and
styles.

I told them the next time we play four I was going to bring my own trolley. Sometimes I just
dont know when to be quiet. As soon as I spouted off, I was asked to make one for Larry and
Diana Beck. The other contestants were Larry and Janice Sarver, all from Bradford.

The card game is very simple, and I suggest you Google it online. You only get four cards
and the fun starts immediately. The rule that gets everyone up tight is this: You must always
follow suit, unless you have an eight, then you can change the suit to anything you desire. If
you play a four, the next person must draw four cards. If the next person has a four, he or she
can play the four and make the next person draw eight cards, and so forth. The highest draw
Ive ever seen is 16. I shouldnt have to tell you that this gets opponents very upset. You
cant believe what comes out of their mouths.

I remember growing up in Victory Heights in Piqua, Ohio. Just about every weekend, my
Mother (Eileen Peeples Miller) would take us with her while the adults played cards on the first
floor. The kids would go upstairs, unattended, and play all sorts of games, etc. Lets just leave
that information in the lock box. The year was around 1954, I was about nine years old and my

The evening was a huge success. We all got our bellies full, and had plenty of drinks, snacks and
laughter. Just think, we didnt have to go to some big concert, or to King Island or the Smoky
Mountains. We all pitched in with something to eat and drink, while Irene supplied her home and
the hamburgers and brats.
You might say we laughed until dawn. But actually we were home by 9:30 p.m.
This weeks bottom line: I have a golfing friend that recently told me that when his grandchildren
come to visit, they must check their cell phones on arrival. I didnt tell him, but I think this is a
wonderful idea that we should all enforce. If you dont believe what Im saying, just stop and look
around in a restaurant at all the children and adults with their heads down. No talking. No laughing. No eye-to-eye contact. No face-to-face communication.
Its very, very sad that we have allowed this to happen.
With the advent of cell phones, especially with the very small microphone that attaches to the cell
phone itself, it's getting harder and harder I find, to differentiate between schizophrenics and people talking on a cell phone. - Bob Newhart
