The Rose House Offers Kindness

For Those With Developmental Disabilities

By Ejvind Boccolini
ll throughout northern New
Jersey, an organization is helping
adults with intellectual and/or
developmental disabilities lead more
meaningful lives as they become integrated into the community and workforce
more and more.
The Rose House, in Morris Plains, is a
"non-profit organization, providing person-centered programs for developmentally disabled adults, helping them to pursue their goals and dreams, and become
valued members of their communities,"
their website reads.
Earlier this month, Tom Mitchell of
the Rose House spoke in a phone interview about upcoming programs and the
help they have given individuals with
intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
The Rose House serves adults with
Intellectual
and
Developmental
Disabilities (IDD) such as Down

Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome and

Autism Spectrum Disorders. Its contact
information is info@TheRoseHouse.org;
and its website is TheRoseHouse.org.
Mitchell said The Rose House has
programs to help out families with an
IDD individuals, and the men and women
themselves, visiting their homes for possibly a few hours each day or each week,
depending on the level of care. There are
different levels of vocational training and
"self-directed" supports as well, and IDD
individuals also visit the community for
activities.
In Parsippany, at the Parsippany PAL,
there is the Rose House Cafe, a community center-type facility in which IDD
men and women serve tasty muffins,
soups, salads, chips and hot dogs to the
members and occasional members of the
community. This is one example of how
IDD men and women have been trained
and integrated into the workforce, each
gaining a personal uplift and creating a

more meaningful life for themselves.

The Rose House also has four group
homes, and 10 apartments in northern NJ,
offering residential possibilities for men
and women. There are two group homes
in Budd Lake, one in Morris Plains, and
10 apartments in Hanover. They are in
the process of purchasing a house in
Parsippany as well.
Training and education in independent
living skills can allow individuals to
enter into these residential living spaces.
They gain skills in cooking, cleaning,
community shopping, and of course, job
skills such as working a cash register, for
instance.
"The more integrated the better," said
Mitchell, adding that the Rose House has
served more than 100 individuals during
its 15 years.
For these programs, families receive
partial funding from the state, and parents provide funding too. The Rose
House accepts men and women 21 and

older.
As a result, IDD men and women can
become integrated by way of community-based Residential Living Skills that
they will obtain from The Rose House;
Competitive Employment Training; Job
Sampling for High School Seniors (graduating seniors can become involved
though not yet 21); and Healthy Choices,
a three-session course on cooking your
own healthy, tasty meals, designed
specifically for people with developmental disabilities and their caregivers.
Rose House is planning a 5K run/walk
at County College of Morris in Randolph
for Oct. 11. Check its website, the
RoseHouse.org closer to the event to
confirm the details.
Individuals qualify for the Rose House
services via referrals from the state
Department
of
Developmental
Disabilities, Easter Seals, and also via
referrals from NJ high schools.

Upcoming Annual Golf Event Supports Kids With Cancer

By Cheryl Conway
ineteen years ago, at the age of six,
Carlos Raymond Saavedra of
Wayne was diagnosed with cancer
and told he would have less than four
months to live.
When he was sent to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. to
undergo experimental treatment, along with
seven other children, he beat the odds and
was the lone survivor.
To honor Carlos and his survival against
medulloblastoma, a cancerous tumor found
in the brain stem, his family set up a foundation- The Carlos Raymond Saavedra
Foundation (C.R.S.)- in his name to support
St. Judes, cancer victims and their families.
The foundations annual golf outing
fundraiser raises thousands of dollars for
this cause.
The Fifth Annual Carlos Raymond
Saavedra Foundation Golf Outing is set for
Wed., Sept. 23, at the Preakness Valley Golf
Course in Wayne. Shot gun start is at 9:30
a.m.; dinner, drinks and silent auction will
continue at 5 p.m. at the Carriage House.
Prizes will be awarded in different areas

like the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Cost is $150 per person, includes dinner;
$85 without dinner; and $75 dinner only.
Golf cart included. With 80 golfers last year,
golf outing organizers are hoping to attract
100 golfers this year.
The event is open to the public for both
men and women. Everyones invited; its a
good fun day, says Denise Caposella, original foundation founder and president.
Caposella and her husband, Michael,
who chairs the golf event, started the foundation to honor their nephew, Carlos.
It was Oct. 11, 1996, when Carlos was
diagnosed with cancer and underwent several surgeries.
After a 15 hour brain surgery procedure, the family was told he was bleeding to
death. So the doctors stopped the surgery
and closed him up. While everyone was
devastated with the news, God gave Carlos
Raymond a miracle and the bleeding miraculously stopped.
Carlos went to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital to undergo an experimental protocol with seven other children,
who all died but him, explains Caposella.

Pictured, from left, is Michael Caposella, Carlos Raymond Saavedra, and Carlos Saavedra Sr.

Carlos was left almost completely deaf

with some learning disabilities. His parents,
Linda and Carlos Sr., struggled to pay for all
the costs and relied heavily on donations.
We started it in his honor to pay it forward because he was so fortunate, says
Caposella. The foundation pays St. Judes to
help other families pay for children battling

cancer, siblings activities and extra costs

such as gas, food, hotel.
Last year, for the first time, the foundation sent some kids to a summer camp in
Long Island- Motivational Recovery
Environment- for kids with cancer and their
siblings. Caposella hopes to send more kids

again this summer to that camp, where Carlos was a camp
counselor last year.
Since the foundation was established, C.R.S. has donated $23,000 so far, with $11,000 to St. Judes; and the
remaining helping nine families in the U.S. and to the
campers.
Carlos, the honorary chair of the foundation, is thrilled
to have the foundation. It gives him a sense of purpose; it
gives him a good sense of being; he likes to pay it forward,
says Caposella.
Carlos started his own online hat company last year with
his two younger sisters, Larraine and Natalia. The cancer
treatments have left him bald and sensitive to others who do
not have hair. For every hat that is purchased, another hat is
donated to a child with cancer. Called Halo Hats, all kinds
of hats are sold such as ski caps, golf hats, sun hats. He also
provides the hats for each golfer at the C.R.S. Golf Outing
and even passed out hats to patients at St. Judes.
A small foundation, the C.R.S. Golf Outing is the only
fundraiser held. Golf was the chosen event as Michael
Caposella volunteers on the Paterson Fire Dept., and figures
since most firemen like to golf he knew he could get firemen to go, says Caposella.
With such a good time had every year, they say Im
bringing back a four-some next year, says Caposella. We
started it with 50 golfers; it has grown.

ashing a check just got easier with a new cash checking store that recently opened in East Hanover.
Cash Centers of New Jersey on Route 10 in East Hanover
opened in January, and is one of nine locations in Morris and
Essex counties. Licensed by the department of banking,
Cash Centers of NJ does not hold any money or accounts
like other banks.
Whether for business or personal use, customers can cash
their check without having a bank account.
Some people dont carry balances in accounts so they
have to wait to cash a check, says Tommy Wilson, company president. Its a great tool for cash flow for companies.
We are allowed to cash third party checks.
For a small fee, customers can cash a check without waiting for funds to clear and without a minimum balance in an
account.
You dont have to wait for your check to clear; you can
get cash right away, he says. We are trying to make it convenient for people.
Customers can get their funds immediately. Just endorse
the check, show an ID and the money is yours, as stated on
the website. Its as easy as that. There are no holds, no
delays, and no red tape, just fast and friendly service with a
smile!

At Cash Centers of NJ, customers pay a two percent fee

for check cashing.
We offer the lowest rates in the business and cash all
types of checks, no matter how large or small including
payroll checks, tax returns, settlement checks, social security checks, unemployment checks, personal checks, government checks, insurance settlement checks, cashiers checks,
company checks and money orders.
In addition to check cashing, money orders are sold as
well as wire transfers and debit cards for a separate fee.
Instead of carrying cash, individuals can purchase a preloaded Visa debit card for a designated amount.
Wilson opened his first check-cashing store 18 years ago
in Montclair. Other stores opened up in Parsippany, West
Orange, Orange, Bloomfield and other areas. Each of his
stores also features an added business in the lobby like
designer fragrances, lottery machines, and even a NJ
licensed pawn broker service at the East Hanover store.
Besides the convenience of cashing checks, customers
will experience great customer service and friendliness by
company workers.
We build a personal relationship and rapport with the
people, says Wilson.
Hours for the East Hanover store are Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to
6 p.m.; and Sat., 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, go

IMPLANT DENTISTRY
For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients
with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure
has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the
recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they
provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini
implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.
Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an
integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Women's Clothing Store Sets Up New Location In Verona

By Cheryl Conway
ont be surprised to run into some Montclair residents browsing through the same rack while
shopping at a new ladies clothing store in town.
After six years of being located in Montclair, Ivy &
Shania is still located on Bloomfield Ave. but just in
Verona. April 18 was the grand opening of its new location at 524 Bloomfield, Ave., right across from Verona
Park.
The landlord wanted my little store to combine with
his two little stores to open a restaurant, says owner DJ
Li. One of her friends, meanwhile, who lives in Verona
and owned a restaurant there, encouraged Li to find a
vacant spot in Verona to open her store.
We find Verona people to be very friendly, says Li.
The mayor even came to congratulate us on April 18.
In the 1,000 sq. ft. store, shoppers will find an affordable selection of clothing for misses most appropriate for
ages 35 years old and older, as well as ladies in the 70s
and 80s, says Li.
We are size fitting, says Li. We have more for
misses; more with sleeves and buttoning, rather than a
line for juniors and those in their 20s.
Material ranges from 100 percent linen to natural fab-

clothing as well as seasonal is on display.
Besides clothing, accessories are also featured including custom jewelry, fancy hats, handbags and scarves.
The price is most attractive to our customers, says
Li, who has been in the clothing business since 1996.
Affordable, describes the price the best with most
items ranging from $29 to $39.99 and up.
Li says a lot of people from Montclair follow up,
and have been traveling just a little further on
Bloomfield Ave. to still shop in her store.
"They're coming back," she said. She is also getting
new customers from Verona and Caldwell, from mouth
to mouth talk stopping in to check out the new shop in
town.
Customers can receive 20 percent off one item

We are very thankful to Joseph

to the airport, deciding where to park in crowded lots, remembering where the car is parked, getting
the luggage out of the vehicle and then finding the
means to get to the gate in time for a flight.
A lot of these concerns can be avoided for those drivers who choose Vista Parking for their off-site parking
destination. Located directly across Newark Liberty
International Airport, customers can park their car valet
style in a secure 24-hour access lot before they even get
to the busy airport and then receive car-door to airportdoor service any time of day without any wait.
Family operated and owned since 1988, Vista
Parking has been providing the most convenient means
of off-site parking for travelers who use Newark
Airport.
The service at Vista Parking is much more convenient than long-term because its a door to door service,
says the company president. Customers are immediately greeted by a van; theres no waiting for shuttles, not

waiting every 15 minutes. We take you on demand; you

come in, we are ready to go. Unlike other lots, They
are not walking through long dark parking lots in snow
or far away.
What used to be four or five lots at Newark Airport
has grown, but at Vista Parking customers can park
before they get to the airport.
We are right there, says the owner. We are located
right when you come off 78; right at the end of the exit,
right at exit 58B; or exit 14 off of the NJ Turnpike
located at the Howard Johnsons Hotel in Newark.
At Vista Parking, award winning service is provided; cars are kept in a safe and secure lot; and service is
available 24 hours a day.
Customers get free shuttle service to the airport, just
a three minute ride. We drop you off right at the terminal and pick you up right at the terminal. Also offered
are corporate rates, fast check out, all valet parking, frequent parker rewards club, luggage assistance and security.
All size vehicles are welcome and there is no minimum to days parked.

We are very customer service friendly, he said.

Once you pull in you dont have to pull your bags. We
clean off your car when it snows. Theres nothing worse
than coming home from the Bahamas and theres two
feet of snow on your car. We make it so simple for you.
It starts and finishes so nice. This is valet; the car is
brought up to you, warmed up on a cool night.
According to the website, At Vista Parking, you
wont have to worry about navigating massive parking
garages or where you parked your car. All you have to
do is call the number on your claim ticket and one of our
shuttles will be dispatched to meet you at the arrival terminal and return you to your vehicle.
At random parking lots, cars can be stolen, misplaced, sometimes people forget where they parked their
car or what row they are in. If you have a problem with
your car when you get back, it just brings aggravation.
Cost to park at Vista Parking is reasonably priced at
$48 a day for short term parking; and $13 to $14 a day
for long-term parking. For more information, go to
www.vistaparking.com or call 973-263-2009 or 973 465

Valerie Fund Walk Rings In Tenth Birthday

With One Million Dollars Raised

ore than 4,000 walkers and runners came out to

Essex Countys Verona Park on Sat., June 13, in
support of The Valerie Funds Annual Walk and
JAG Physical Therapy 5K Run raising more than $1 million to benefit children with cancer and blood disorders.
For the fourth year in a row, fundraising efforts by
more than 200 teams and corporate sponsorships raised
the proceeds that will benefit the seven Valerie Fund
Centers, which provide comprehensive health care and
services for children with cancer and blood disorders.
These centers are located in top pediatric hospitals in New
Jersey, New York and metropolitan Philadelphia.
The Valerie Funds Annual Walk has now raised more
than $5 million since 2006.
Major sponsors including JAG Physical Therapy, US
Trust, Wakefern, The Edwin and Suzanne Goldstein
Family Foundation, The Silver Family Foundation,
Barnabas Health and Atlantic Health System continue to
be the foundation of the events success.
The individuals and businesses donating to the walk
have made it a priority to support the communities in
which their employees live and work. In store and restaurant campaigns ranging from one to six weeks were conducted at Shoprites owned by the Inserra, Saker and
Sumas (Village) families and at more than 130 Burger

King locations.
Walk Chair Abby Goldberg said, The walk is such a
special event. There is music, games, food and givealways but most of all the park is full of warmth. You look
around and see all the brave TVF kids, the appreciative
parents and thousands of friends and family cheering them
all on. The day is a resounding win for our kids, Team
Green!
Ed Goldstein, co-founder of The Valerie Fund, said,
What a sight. Seeing a sea of colors on more than 4,000
people representing those in attendance, green worn by
Valerie Fund children, orange by volunteers who made the
event possible, and gold by caring people who wanted to
help our Valerie Fund children get a second chance in life
to beat this hideous disease. And it will happen with
everyone's support.
Over the past decade, this premier fundraiser has
grown steadily over time- in attendance, number of donations and sponsorship participation.
After their nine-year-old daughter Valerie succumbed
to cancer, Sue and Ed Goldstein were determined that no
family should have to travel great distances to receive
state-of-the-art medical care. Along with a group of close
friends, they began fundraising efforts from their living
room-tireless work that would lead to the 1977 opening of
