Safety information
Conveying ammonium nitrate
This is a supplement to the general operating manual.
You must also comply with the general safety information, as well as the
operating and maintenance manuals

1. Commissioning and operation of the pump


- Rotational direction of motor shaft:

When checking the rotational direction of the motor,


the coupling must be decoupled!
In the event of incorrect rotational direction, the impeller will separate from the pump
shaft and run into the pump casing.
This will result in damage to the pump!
A new rotational direction check must be performed after maintenance work on the power
network / motor.
After the rotational direction check, engage the coupling and remove the warning sign.
The pump is in a decoupled state when it is delivered.

- Shaft seal / stuffing box as standstill seal:

Never tighten the stuffing box during pump operation!


Monitor the temperature of the stuffing box after the pump
maintenance is completed!
The stuffing box is only a standstill seal, which is only in contact with the pump shaft
while at a standstill.
Minor leakage when the pump is at a standstill is normal.
The stuffing box is not lubricated, and must never come into contact with the shaft during
pump operation. Contact will result in rapid overheating.
Sealing during pump operation is hydrodynamic, and is produced by the impeller back
vanes and an additional seal expeller.
If leakage occurs during pump operation, this sealing is not sufficient for the existing
suction head. Please contact BUNGARTZ.
Never tighten the stuffing box during pump operation!

- Flushing the sealing chamber in the area of the stuffing


box:
Water should be used as the flushing liquid (volume approx. 80 160 liter/h nonpressurized)
When ammonium nitrate melt is being conveyed, an additional steam connection must be
made available.

Open the flush / water inlet to the sealing chamber before


starting the pump!
This flushing prevents crystallization in the area of the seal expeller and the stuffing box.

- Bypass / minimum feed rate:

Never operate the pump without conveying / throughflow /


minimum feed rate!

The minimum feed rate is specified in the operating manual, and must never be lower than
approx. 10% of the feed rate indicated under the optimum pump efficiency.
This minimum feed rate is also required for pumps of type UMOR with an additional relief
pipeline

- Circulation pipeline / bypass pipeline (type UMOR):

Never operate the UMOR pump with the circulation pipeline


closed!
The circulation pipeline must be connected to the suction container or the pump suction
side.
Use an inspection glass to check the throughflow.
This circulating flow prevents overheating of the liquid in the seal expeller casing.

- Temperature measurement at pump casing and / or seal


expeller casing:

Never operate the pump without temperature measurement at the


pump casing or seal expeller casing!
(The position for temperature measurement is indicated in the dimensional drawing for
the pump.)
Temperature measurement avoids overheating of the pumping medium in the event that
the discharge nozzle or sealing chamber nozzle is closed.
At least one measurement must be performed on the pump casing. In the case of pumps
with a speed of over 1700 rpm, a measurement must also be performed at the seal
expeller casing.

- Surface temperature of the casing:

The pump casing is hot during pump operation!


It must be assumed that the casing temperature is the same as the temperature of the
pumping medium. You must therefore use contact protection or thermal insulation in
order to avoid burn injuries.

- Completely emptying the pump:

Never operate the pump without a drain valve or water supply


connected to the seal!
In order to prevent the crystallization of ammonium nitrate, the pump must be
immediately and completely emptied after it is shut down!
The drain valve must therefore be opened after the pump is deactivated.
The seal casing will automatically drain through a connecting borehole to the casing.
The water or steam supply must remain open during the draining process.
Before the pump is restarted, turn the shaft manually and completely, in order to
ensure that the medium has not crystallized inside the pump.

2. Maintenance work on the pump


Maintenance instructions are described in more detail in the operating manual,
and in the ANNEX describing how to assemble the pump.

- Dismantling the pump:

Before dismantling, the pump needs to be completely drained


and flushed out with water!
Even when the pump has been fully flushed, after an extended operating period
residual ammonium nitrate crystals can remain in hollow spaces!
e.g.: behind wear plates, inside the impeller hub, behind seals.

Never use a flame / welding torch to heat pump components!


This causes a deflagration or explosion!
If after an extended operating period the impeller cannot be separated from the shaft, you
must still never heat it with a flame / welding torch!
Residual ammonium nitrate may still be trapped inside!
In the event of problems with dismantling, consult the manufacturer.

Assembling the pump:

Never use organic materials to lubricate the inner pump


components and seals!
Organic materials can cause ammonium nitrate to break down /
explode!
(It is only permitted to use materials manufactured on the basis of inorganic substances
(e.g. PTFE).)

Never use organic materials as lubricant (as Anti-Seize) between


pump components!

- Checking the axial clearance gaps between the impeller


and the seal expeller, and the axial shaft displacement:
After or during the assembly of the pump, the axial clearance gaps must be checked
between the impeller and the pump casing, and between the seal expeller and the pump
casing.
In addition, the axial shaft displacement must be checked.
The minimum clearance gaps are specified in the operating manual.

Before you install the pump in the plant, the clearance gaps and
the axial shaft movement must be checked!

Check that all shaft nuts have been tightened and secured!

Check that the pump shaft can be rotated by hand!


If the shaft is difficult to turn, this indicates that the stuffing box has been overtightened.
Loosen it.
If the shaft does not turn, this indicates that rotor components are in contact with
the casing.
Check the clearance gaps.
