Dear Neil: I have a fol-
low-up to a recent question
on bermudagrass. What is
the definition of the term
“scalping?” I know the best
mowing height for it is 1.5
inches. How short is scalp-
ing? I’ve always been afraid
of cutting my bermuda lawn
too short because of the heat.
How does it differ from de-
thatching and aerating?
Scalping gets confused
with dethatching and aer-
ating. To explain all three
terms: scalping is the re-
moval of winter-killed
stubble from bermudagrass
lawns. It involves setting the
mower down by one notch
(or, in extreme cases, two
notches). It’s a nasty, dusty
job, so you’ll need to wear
quality goggles and a good
respirator. Do it in late Feb-
ruary or early March. You
will eliminate many of the
weeds in the process, plus
the soil will warm up more
quickly. New growth, there-
fore, will be more noticeable.
Nonetheless, it’s an optional
process that’s more for good
looks than for the health of
the lawn.
Dethatching, by compari-
son, involves removal of
the undecomposed organic
matter that accumulates be-
tween grass runners and the
soil surface. It is not a com-
mon problem, but when it
does show up it will almost
always be in bermuda. Good
maintenance efforts will
generally diminish the need
to dethatch your lawn. Most
of us never have to do it.
Finally, aerating involves
removing plugs of soil and
organic matter from the top
couple of inches of the lawn.
It allows moisture and nu-
trients to penetrate into the
holes, therefore, into the soil.
Unless you have terrible soil
compaction, this, too, will
probably be optional.
Dear Neil: I have not been
satisfied with my rose of
Sharon shrubs that I plant-
ed to be a screen. I thought
they would grow quickly, but
they are still spindly and
short. Do I need to prune
them? Should I fertilize
them? Should they simply be
moved?
Roses of Sharon are lovely
summer-flowering shrubs.
They do vary a good bit in
their mature height and
growth form, however, so
be sure you planted a type
that has the genetic poten-
tial to grow as tall as you
had hoped. Pruning will not
help, other than perhaps to
get the plants to thicken up.
Apply a high-nitrogen fer-
tilizer in early spring and
again in early fall. Whether
you move them yet this win-
ter or not will be up to you.
You should remember, how-
ever, that these are decidu-
ous plants, so to use them as
a screen still leaves four to
five months that they would
be bare.
Dear Neil: I have dollar
weed in my St. Augustine
lawn. It is becoming quite a
problem, as it’s crowding out
the lawn. What will control
it, and when should I apply
it?
Use a broadleafed weed-
killer spray containing 2,4-
D. You’ll need to read and
follow label directions care-
fully to avoid damage to de-
sirable plants nearby. How-
ever, if you apply it carefully
with a pump sprayer set to
deliver a comparatively fine
mist, and if you include one
or two drops of a liquid dish-
washing detergent to help
the herbicide hold onto the
leaves, you should see good
results. I’m not a big advo-
cate of weed-and-feed fertil-
izers as they bring too much
risk of damage to trees and
shrubs.

BMS coach’s comments: This was a
tough, hard-fought loss to end the sea-
son. We played a good game, but came
up just short. Missed free throws were
the difference in the game. We made
eight of 16 from the line. I thought we
rebounded well and played pretty good
defense. We were a little undersized
and that gave Pilot Point some easy
shots. The loss ended our season, but I
thought overall, that we had a success-
ful season.

Most people know they should in-
crease their activity level by walk-
ing or taking aerobics classes.
In fact, many of you probably
made a New Year’s resolution this
year to start on Jan. 1 and have al-
ready given up.
Is there any hope? The answer is
yes. Changing any habit requires
several tries and a great deal of ef-
fort for most people.
Increasing your activity level
can have a great impact
on your health both now
and later in life.
A recent article in the
Archives of Internal Med-
icine reported on a study
where 100 middle-aged
women were encouraged
to walk for exercise while
another 100 were not en-
couraged to walk.
Ten years later, women
in the walking group had
significantly fewer health prob-
lems than the non-walking group
of women.
The women in the walk-
ing group were walking
seven miles more each
week than those in the
other group.
Only 2 percent of the
walking group was diag-
nosed with heart disease,
whereas almost 13 per-
cent of the non-walkers
DAVIS had a diagnosis of heart
disease.
Walkers also had fewer hospital-
izations, surgeries and falls.
Participating in the short-term
walking program 10 years earlier
was the main difference between
these two groups. So, trying again
is important. Studies have shown
that walking with others and en-
gaging in a program long enough
to make walking a habit promote
success.

Learning to argue with your teen

On TV, disagreements between par-
ents and their teenage children tend to
be funny or cute, and usually end with a
happy outcome. In real life, arguments
with your teenager seldom seem “cute”
or “funny,” and often end in real anger
with no clear resolution.
It would be wonderful if parent-teen
arguments never happened, but the re-
ality is that disagreements are a nor-
mal part of the developmental process.
Young children can accept the black
and white rules we create for them (“No
more TV!”), but our teens have begun to
learn that there are also shades of gray
in the world.
The result is that teenagers increas-
ingly question and test us. Annoying
though it may be, it’s actually a healthy
part of growing up. The trick for par-
ents is to keep such questioning from
leading to heated, hurtful arguments.

Step one is simply accepting that
teens will question decisions and rules,
and debate you about almost every-
thing, and will do so more frequently as
they get older. The trick is to recognize
that as a part of the maturation process
and develop techniques to avoid heated
arguments and hurt feelings.
One such technique is taking a non-
aggressive attitude in disagreements. If
your immediate response to your argu-
mentative teen is one of anger and zero
compromise, you can probably expect
the same back in response.
Instead, remain calm, use a rational
tone of voice, and let your child see that
you’re willing to listen and discuss, not
just yell and be angry. Setting that ex-
ample helps your child understand that
you expect the same sort of response
from him or her.
You especially want to avoid words
and accusations that inflame the situ-
ation and put your child on the angry
defensive. If you disagree about some-

As part of EnCana’s com-
mitment to community in-
vestment, the oil and gas
company has donated 12
portable defibrillators to
five school districts, includ-
ing Decatur.
Donations were made to
school districts where En-
Cana has drilling operations.
Decatur ISD received four of
the defibrillators while two
each were donated to Buf-
falo, Fairfield, Teague and
Franklin ISDs. The districts
will place them in locations
with the greatest need.
The project is in conjunc-
tion with HeartSine Tech-
nologies, which is working
with EnCana on the presen-
tation, delivery and training
with the defibrillators.
According to Nancy Far-
rar, who handles public
relations for EnCana Oil
& Gas, the easy-to-use por-
table defibrillators can be
used by anyone encounter-
ing a situation on campus
where someone’s heart has
stopped beating, be it a stu-
dent, teacher, athlete or a
visitor.
Each year, more than
250,000 Americans die from
sudden cardiac arrest. The
American Heart Association
believes at least 20,000 lives
could be saved annually by
prompt use of AEDs (auto-
mated external defibrilla-
tors).
State legislators, includ-
ing those from Texas, have
become actively involved
with the issue in the past
six years. All 50 states have
enacted defibrillator laws or
adopted regulations.
Trained, non-medical per-
sonnel can use the AEDs to
treat a person in cardiac ar-
rest. The AED device “guides
