ULAB1122: ACADEMIC ENGLISH SKILLS


SEMESTER III, 2014/2015
COMPONENT: MyLinE 10%
INTRODUCTION
This component provides you with additional self-access learning resources to learn and use English at your
own time, place and pace by performing assigned tasks in MyLinE, the national Online Resources for Learning
in English at http://myline.utm.my. The component comprises 10% of the coursework marks for the course,
ULAB1122.
The tasks are to be completed any time outside class lessons on your own between 12 midnight, 4 July 2015
(Saturday) and 12 midnight, 30 August 2015 (Sunday).

AIM
The main aim of the component is to give you the opportunity to take responsibility for your own learning and
improvement. You should therefore aim to do more than the tasks assigned for self-improvement.

TASKS
In order to earn 10 marks, you are required to complete the following activities under the resource, World of
Challenges in MyLinE outside class time on your own.
A) One (1) Test & Rank (60 questions)
B) One (1) Dare2Learn previously known as Online quizzes (50 questions)
C) Twenty (20) Quick & Easy previously known as Short Quizzes (10 questions in each quiz)

PROCEDURE
1. Go to MyLinE website at http://myline.utm.my.

To log in to MyLinE, use UTM+Matric No. as your username (e.g. UTMSX123456ABC78) and your identity
card number as your password (e.g. SX123456ABC78).
If you encounter difficulty logging in to MyLinE, it is your responsibility to inform your English Language
instructor immediately. You could complete an online form available on the MyLinE homepage (as shown
below).

Alternatively, you could contact Mr Rahim at 0755379269 or you may also send an email to
myline@utm.my stating your name, matric card number, center of learning, subject code, and class
section.

Once you have logged in, roll over World of Challenges and choose one of the options in the drop down
menu to reach Test & Rank, Dare2Learn or Quick & Easy.

3.1 Test & Rank

test and you can
start answering them

o Click Test and Rank complete any one of the Test and Rank quizzes (60 questions in each quiz)
you must complete all the questions and click Submit all and finish for your attempt to be recorded. No
feedbacks are given to the questions in Test and Rank. You may try the test again or another Test and Rank
as many times as you wish. All your responses will be submitted to be scored and the marks achieved will
be displayed.
o If you click Save without submitting, your responses will be saved and you may continue working on it at
a later time if the quiz does not have a time limit. However, your attempt will not be counted as a
complete attempt in your Award of Marks.

o Click Dare2Learn complete any one of the Dare2Learn quizzes (50 questions in one quiz) you must
complete all the questions and click Submit all and finish for your attempt to be recorded. All your

o If you click Save without submitting, your responses will be saved and you may continue working on it at
a later time if the quiz does not have a time limit. However, your attempt will not be counted as a
complete attempt in your Award of Marks.

3.3 Quick & Easy

o To get to Quick & Easy quizzes: Roll over World of Challenges Quick & Easy You can then
choose any of the 7 categories of quizzes (Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening, Reading, Writing,
Speaking or Workplace Communication)
o Complete the stipulated number of short quizzes (10 questions in each quiz). You may check the
answers and try the same question or the same quiz or other quizzes as many times as you wish. You
must complete all the questions and click Submit all and finish for your attempt to be recorded.

4. Types of Quizzes in MyLinE


There are two types of short quizzes: (a) Hot Potatoes Quizzes, and (b) Moodle Quizzes.
a) For Hot Potatoes Quizzes, to submit your response just click on the button [?] for the right answers or
click Check.

b) For Moodle Quizzes,


If you click Save without submitting, your responses will be saved and you may continue
working on it at a later time if the quiz does not have a time limit.
If you click Submit all and finish, all your responses will be submitted to be scored and the marks
achieved will be displayed.

Make sure you click Submit all and finish to ensure that your responses are recorded for grading.

How to view marks in MyLinE


You can also check your own progress in MyLinE. To do so, you need to go to ELSP@UTM Choose
ULAB1122 On the bottom right hand side of the page, click on the drop down menu and choose
your section.

2) Choose ULAB1112/UHB1412

3) Choose your section

6) Marks will be calculated only for the stipulated activities completed between
4 July 2015 (Saturday) 12 midnight and 30 August 2015 (Sunday), 12 midnight, of Semester III,
2014/2015.
7) You are, however, encouraged to use MyLinE throughout the whole duration of your study in the
university. You are also encouraged to attempt more than what have been assigned.
8) Award of marks for this component is based on the number of quizzes you have completed as shown in
the table on the next page.
