The New International Version of the Bible The Bible
text itself is the most important part of any Bible. Readable
and accurate, the goal of the NIV is to reproduce, as
closely as possible, the reading experience of the original
audience.
Theres no better time than now to devote yourself to God
and his Word. Start to build a strong and intimate
relationship with the One who created you and loved you
before the foundation of the earth by beginning a devotional
relationship with God. May God reveal himself to you in
profound ways as you open the door to his Word and his
heart!
A Library in Itself
The Bible is comprised of 66 individual books written by
different authors with different writing styles in
different eras of history with different purposes. What
separates the Bible from other anthologies is the fact that
God himself guided the writing of Scripture. The result is one
amazingly cohesive book made up of disparate parts. Heres
a quick look at the different genres youll find as you explore
the books of Scripture.

Preface
The goal of the New International version (NIV) is to enable
English-speaking people from around the world to read and
hear Gods eternal Word in their own language. Our work as
translators is motivated by our conviction that the Bible is
Gods Word in written form. We believe that the Bible
contains the divine answer to the deepest needs of
humanity, sheds unique light on our path in a dark world and
sets forth the way to our eternal well-being. Out of these
deep convictions, we have sought to recreate as far as
possible the experience of the original audienceblending
transparency to the original text with accessibility for the
millions of English speakers around the world. We have
prioritized accuracy, clarity and literary quality with the goal
of creating a translation suitable for public and private
reading, evangelism, teaching, preaching, memorizing and
liturgical use. We have also sought to preserve a measure of
continuity with the long tradition of translating the
Scriptures into English.
The complete NIV Bible was first published in 1978. It was a
completely new translation made by over a hundred scholars
working directly from the best available Hebrew, Aramaic
and Greek texts. The translators came from the United States,
Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, giving the
translation an international scope. They were from many
denominations
and
churchesincluding
Anglican,
Assemblies of God, Baptist, Brethren, Christian Reformed,

Creator. Our height, weight and skin color may indicate our
human origins, but our soul and spirit reflect our Sovereign
God.
When a child is born, its not unusual for someone to claim
shes the very image of a relative. But what does it mean to
be created in the image of our heavenly Father? An image is
a likeness or resemblancea reflection as seen in a mirror.
Scripture teaches that Jesus Christ is the image of the
invisible God (Colossians 1:15). As we grow in faith, we
who believe are gradually being transformed into [Christs]
image (2 Corinthians 3:18). When we become like Jesus, we
begin to look more and more like our heavenly Father.
God created us to convey the distinctive imprint of his
divine nature to a world often blinded to his existence. Even
our differences reflect the One who delighted in creating a
world of dazzling diversity: peculiar penguins and majestic
eagles; towering redwoods and dwarf pines; blondes,
brunettes and redheads every person created with the
individual imprint of the Creators hand to bear his image. So
the next time you pass by a mirror, pause a moment to gaze in
wonder at the designer original whom God loves so dearly
you!
Genesis 1:27
So God created mankind in his own image, in the
image of God he created them; male and female he
created them.
Reflection
1 How do you see Gods image reflected in the lives of
others you admire?
2 What factors from the past have damaged your sense of
self-worth?
3 Think of three ways in which you can beautifully reflect
the characteristics of your Creator by imitating Christ.

animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their
kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according
to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything
with wings. 15Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life
in them came to Noah and entered the ark. 16The animals
going in were male and female of every living thing, as God
had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.
17
For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as
the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth.
18The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the
ark floated on the surface of the water. 19They rose greatly
on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire
heavens were covered. 20The waters rose and covered the
mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.[33],[34]
21Every living thing that moved on land perishedbirds,
livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the
earth, and all mankind. 22Everything on dry land that had the
breath of life in its nostrils died. 23Every living thing on the
face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the
creatures that move along the ground and the birds were
wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him

But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the
livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind
over the earth, and the waters receded. 2Now the springs of
the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed,
and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. 3The water
receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred
and fifty days the water had gone down, 4and on the
seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest
on the mountains of Ararat. 5The waters continued to recede
until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month
the tops of the mountains became visible.
6
After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in
the ark 7and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and
forth until the water had dried up from the earth. 8Then he
sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the
surface of the ground. 9But the dove could find nowhere to
perch because there was water over all the surface of the
earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his
hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the
ark. 10He waited seven more days and again sent out the
dove from the ark. 11When the dove returned to him in the
evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf!
Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.
12He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again,
Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife
and his sons wives. 19All the animals and all the creatures
that move along the ground and all the birdseverything

another.

Then he said to him, So shall your offspring [63] be.

7He also said to him, I am the LORD, who brought you out
of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take

the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and
a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13Then the
LORD said to him, Know for certain that for four hundred
years your descendants will be strangers in a country not
their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated
there. 14But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and
afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15You,
however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at
a good old age. 16In the fourth generation your descendants
will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet

17When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking

promised. She grew older every day, and her body showed
no sign of pregnancy. Perhaps she questioned that Gods
promise of children for Abram included her: Why is God
taking so long? What if Im not the one to bear the
promised child? So Sarai took matters into her own hands.
She gave her slave Hagar to Abram to bear a child to fulfill
Gods promise.
However, things didnt quite turn out the way Sarai
expected. Hagar became pregnant as planned, but Hagars
pride and Sarais jealousy caused a jagged rift between the
two women. And Abram was caught in the middle. The
consequences of Sarais actions not only affected Sarais
family and household but also generations of people who
came after them. To this day, the children of Hagar and Sarai
war against one another as the Arabs and Jews fight for
control over the land of Israel.
But God had a plan. A plan to bless Abram and Sarai with
their very own baby. A plan to bless the world through their
offspring. Isaac would be the fulfillment of Gods promise.
That plan was worth waiting for.
God has plans for your life, too. Plans that will make you
thrive and not be knocked down by lifes setbacks (see
Jeremiah 29:1113). Gods plans are well worth waiting for.
You may be tempted to take matters into your own hands,

life she was leaving too much? Though Sodom was full to
overflowing with sin and vice, apparently the dark and
oppressive city was comfortably familiar to Lots wife.
It is difficult to leave the familiar behind. That fact is as true
today as it was in the days of Sodom and Gomorrahs
destructioneven when God himself is saying, Its time to
move on. If youve ever struggled with a destructive habit,
youve felt the pull of the familiareven as youve sensed
Gods nudge, Move on now. Youve experienced the
temptation to turn back just one more time, for one last look,
one last taste, one last fixeven as God has whispered,
Dont look back. Maybe youve agonized over a loved
ones downward spiral, desperately attempting to rescue
them time and time againuntil finally God impressed upon
you, Stop. Let go.
Unlike Lots wife, none of us has ever become a pillar of salt
by turning back for one last peek. Yet we all struggle with the
difficulties of letting go of the old in order to grasp the new.
Take heart. God understands that letting go of the familiar is
hard. Yet he has called us to move on to new life in Jesus
Christ by letting go of our old worldly lives, our old habits,
our old dreamsto boldly move forward without looking
back. When you feel Gods call to move, allow him to guide
you. He will give you the grace to do whatever he has asked.

1 What does the passage in todays reading teach you
about letting go in order to move forward?
2 Why is it so difficult sometimes to let go of the past?
3 What is one thing you think God may be asking you to

will help you let go of whatever is hindering you from
moving forward in your spiritual journey.

Eve
Strange cravings. That first flutter. Her body was changing,
growing and stretching in unpredictable and unsettling
ways. The first mother in history conceived a child, carried
him to term and gave birth without ever knowing what to
expect next.
She didnt have a girlfriend to confide in when Adam just
didnt understand her moods. She had no one to assure the
young mother that sudden clumsiness was normal or that the
awful bloated feelings would pass. Her experience was the
ultimate natural childbirthshe made it without the benefit
of an obstetrician, a midwife or a drop of pain killer. She
couldnt even run to her mother!
And that was just the pregnancy.
She recalled cradling Cain in her arms as a newborn and
gently leading him to nurse for the first time. She remembered
fingering his tiny hands and counting all his toes, one by
one. She didnt know she could love someone so much.
How, oh how, would she ever be able to be what he needed
her to behis mother? Eve answered her own question
when she spoke in the afterglow of giving birth. With the
help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.
No one was there to inform Eve about the significance of
what had just transpired. They didnt have to. She got it. She
instinctively knew what every mother knows in an instant:
She had not brought forth this miracle by her own power.
And almost simultaneously, she knew she would not be able
to raise him by her own strength either. The very first mother
in history would have to raise her child the very same way
mothers throughout history have conceived and nurtured
childrenfully relying on Gods help.
If that fact wasnt obvious then, it soon would be. Like the
time she had to steal away for a moment alone to cry because
it was the first time she had to punish him. And when he
bickered with his brother. And when his career choice didnt
work out. And whenever her own poor choices threatened to
scar her childrens future.
Eve was the first to experience joy and heartache as a
mother. But no one could tell her then that she certainly
wouldnt be the last.
[Eve] said, With the help of the LORD I have
brought forth a man.

local families he already knew? Next, consider the servant.
Hed been assigned to find a matrimonial needle in a

masters son. And then there was Rebekah. She was asked
to choose to leave her home, family and everything familiar
to travel to a distant country to marry a man shed never met.

directive that his family not intermarry with the Canaanites.
The servant chose to accept a complicated challenge from
his employer, trusting God to lead him to the right woman.
And RebekahRebekah had to make a decision that would
affect the rest of her life. She ultimately chose to trust her life
and future to the servant of a distant relative whose God was
her God. The story of the divinely arranged marriage
between Isaac and Rebekah reminds us that nothing is too
difficult for God.
Trust and obeythese two words go together like coffee
and cream. Yet every day we face difficult situations that
seem to defy simple solutions. As women, myriad difficult
choices face usthe right course of care for a sick child,
moving from everything familiar for a new opportunity,
following Gods leading even when the outcome is hazy,
even when the right choice frightens us. You may toss and
turn for nights without finding peace in your choice. The
right choice is often the hard choice, but not always. How do
we determine the right choice? Obey the guidance you find
in Gods Word, earnestly pray and seek trusted counsel,
then trust God with the outcome. Will you have it your way
Reflection
1 What hard choice is confronting you today?
He set out for Aram Naharaim[101] and made his way to the
town of Nahor. 11He had the camels kneel down near the well
outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women
go out to draw water.
12
Then he prayed, LORD, God of my master Abraham,
make me successful today, and show kindness to my master
Abraham. 13See, I am standing beside this spring, and the
daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.
14May it be that when I say to a young woman, Please let
down your jar that I may have a drink, and she says, Drink,
and Ill water your camels toolet her be the one you have
chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you
have shown kindness to my master.
15Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with
her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son
of Milkah, who was the wife of Abrahams brother Nahor.
16The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever
slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and
came up again.
17The servant hurried to meet her and said, Please give me
a little water from your jar.
18Drink, my lord, she said, and quickly lowered the jar to
her hands and gave him a drink.
19After she had given him a drink, she said, Ill draw water
for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.
20So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to
the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his
camels . 21Without saying a word, the man watched her
closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his
journey successful.
22When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out
a gold nose ring weighing a beka[102] and two gold bracelets
weighing ten shekels.[103] 23Then he asked, Whose

Adbeel, Mibsam, 14Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15Hadad, Tema,
Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. 16These were the sons of
Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers

Isaac.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20and Isaac was forty
years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the
Aramean from Paddan Aram[108] and sister of Laban the
Aramean.
21
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because
she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and his
wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22The babies jostled each
other within her, and she said, Why is this happening to
me? So she went to inquire of the LORD.
23The LORD
said to her,
Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you
will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the
other,
and the older will serve the
younger.
24When
the time came for her to give birth, there were twin
boys in her womb. 25The first to come out was red, and his
whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him

Meddling
Read: Genesis 27:140
Oh, how we love to meddle. We may call it by other names,
of course. Motherly concern. Friendly advice. A word to the
wise. But when we boil it down and take a good look at
whats left in the bottom of the pot, its really just plain, oldfashioned meddling.
Rebekah thought she had good reason to meddle. (But
then, dont we always think we have a good reason?) During
her pregnancy, her twin baby boys had wrestled in her womb
for position. Thats when God told her that Esau, her older
son, would serve Jacob, the younger. Now her husband was

he went and got them and brought them to his

clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the
house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.
Reflection
1 When have you meddled your way through a problem
instead of waiting on God to solve it? What were the
results?
2 When have you seen God solve a problem in a way that
surprised you?
3 What are you waiting on God for now? What will you
meditate on rather than meddle in?

overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 7Bring me
some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I

Come here, my son, and kiss me.

After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely

Jacob, Give me children, or Ill die!
2Jacob became angry with her and said, Am I in the place
of God, who has kept you from having children?
3Then she said, Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her
so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a
family through her.
4So
Jacob said to him, You know how I have worked for you
and how your livestock has fared under my care. 30The little
you had before I came has increased greatly, and the LORD
has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I
do something for my own household?
31
Genesis 31
the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled.

24Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night

either good or bad.

25
Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead
when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives
camped there too. 26Then Laban said to Jacob, What have
you done? Youve deceived me, and youve carried off my
daughters like captives in war. 27Why did you run off
secretly and deceive me? Why didnt you tell me, so I could
send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels
and harps? 28You didnt even let me kiss my grandchildren
and my daughters goodbye. You have done a foolish thing.
29I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of
your father said to me, Be careful not to say anything to
Jacob, either good or bad. 30Now you have gone off
because you longed to return to your fathers household.
But why did you steal my gods?
31Jacob
Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.
33So Laban went into Jacobs tent and into Leahs tent and
into the tent of the two female servants, but he found
nothing. After he came out of Leahs tent, he entered
Rachels tent. 34Now Rachel had taken the household gods
and put them inside her camels saddle and was sitting on
them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but
found nothing.
35
Rachel said to her father, Dont be angry, my lord, that I
cannot stand up in your presence; Im having my period. So
he searched but could not find the household gods.
36Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. What is my
crime? he asked Laban. How have I wronged you that you
hunt me down? 37Now that you have searched through all
my goods, what have you found that belongs to your
household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine,
and let them judge between the two of us.
38I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep
and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from
your flocks. 39I did not bring you animals torn by wild
beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment
from me for whatever was stolen by day or night. 40This was
my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the
cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes. 41It was like this
for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for
you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for
your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times. 42If the
God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac,
had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away
empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of
my hands, and last night he rebuked you.
43Laban answered Jacob, The women are my daughters,
the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. All
you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these
daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne?
44Come now, lets make a covenant, you and I, and let it
serve as a witness between us.
45So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46He said to
his relatives, Gather some stones. So they took stones and
piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap. 47Laban
called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[141]
48Laban
past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me. 53May the
God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their
father, judge between us.
So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father
Isaac. 54He offered a sacrifice there in the hill country and
invited his relatives to a meal. After they had eaten, they
spent the night there.
55Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren
and his daughters and blessed them. Then he left and
returned home.[143]
Genesis 32[144]
1Jacob
also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
Jacob saw them, he said, This is the camp of God!
So he named that place Mahanaim.[145]
2When
3Jacob
spent the night there, and from what he had with him
he selected a gift for his brother Esau: 14two hundred female
goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty
rams, 15thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and
ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.
16He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself,
and said to his servants, Go ahead of me, and keep some
space between the herds.
17He instructed the one in the lead: When my brother Esau
meets you and asks, Who do you belong to, and where are
you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?
18then you are to say, They belong to your servant Jacob.
They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind
us.
19He also instructed the second, the third and all the others
who followed the herds: You are to say the same thing to
Esau when you meet him. 20And be sure to say, Your
servant Jacob is coming behind us. For he thought, I will
pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later,
when I see him, perhaps he will receive me. 21So Jacobs
gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in
the camp.

Innocence Lost

Dinah was Jacobs only daughter. When she ventured from
her familys home to visit with the local people, she was
taken and raped by Shechem, the son of a local ruler.
Because of his position of power, he may have been able to
take her without anyone intervening. Imagine Dinahs terror,
vulnerability and defenselessness as she realized what
Shechem intended. Add to Dinahs anguish the fact that
only pure women could marry in Hebraic culture. Not being
married meant having no social standing, no identity and no
hope for the future.

Then Judah said to Onan, Sleep with your brothers wife

so I can see him for myself. 22And we said to my lord, The
boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will
die. 23But you told your servants, Unless your youngest
brother comes down with you, you will not see my face
again. 24When we went back to your servant my father, we
told him what my lord had said.
25Then our father said, Go back and buy a little more
food. 26But we said, We cannot go down. Only if our
youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the
mans face unless our youngest brother is with us.
27Your servant my father said to us, You know that my
wife bore me two sons. 28One of them went away from me,
and I said, He has surely been torn to pieces. And I have
not seen him since. 29If you take this one from me too and
harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the
grave in misery.
30So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your
servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely
bound up with the boys life, 31sees that the boy isnt there,
he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our
father down to the grave in sorrow. 32Your servant
guaranteed the boys safety to my father. I said, If I do not
bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my
father, all my life!

Genesis 46
Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached
Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father
Isaac.
2
And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said,
Jacob! Jacob!
Here I am, he replied.
3I am God, the God of your father, he said. Do not be
afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great
nation there. 4I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will
surely bring you back again. And Josephs own hand will
close your eyes.
5Then Jacob left Beersheba, and Israels sons took their
father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts
that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. 6So Jacob and all his
offspring went to Egypt, taking with them their livestock and
the possessions they had acquired in Canaan. 7Jacob
brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons and his
daughters and granddaughtersall his offspring.

20So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The
Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine
was too severe for them. The land became Pharaohs, 21and
Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[199] from one end of
Egypt to the other. 22However, he did not buy the land of the
priests, because they received a regular allotment from
Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh
gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23Joseph said to the people, Now that I have bought you
and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you
can plant the ground. 24But when the crop comes in, give a
fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as
seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your
households and your children.

him, If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand
under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness
and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt, 30but when I rest
with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where
they are buried.

Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and
kissed him. 2Then Joseph directed the physicians in his
service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians
embalmed him, 3taking a full forty days, for that was the time
required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him
seventy days.
4When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to
Pharaohs court, If I have found favor in your eyes, speak
to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, 5My father made me swear an
oath and said, I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug
for myself in the land of Canaan. Now let me go up and bury

Reflection
1 Based on your knowledge of Josephs life, how often
might he have given in to fear and worry over the
course of his life?
2 What circumstances are causing you to feel fearful or
worried?
3 Spend time with God asking him to use your fears as
the door through which you can enter your rest,
trusting that God will use your present circumstances
for your good and his glory.

Four centuries pass from the time Jacob went to Egypt at the
end of Genesis to the time the story picks up again in
Exodus. The age of the patriarchs has ended, and we find the
Israelites laboring as slaves under the Egyptian sun, longing
for a redeemer to free them. Gods promises to Abraham
have become timeworn and faded. The Israelites are indeed
numerous, as God promised, but their numbers seem to be
not a blessing but a curse, the cause of their slavery. As for
the land of promisenot one Israelite living has laid eyes on
it. And yet they hope. Thin threads of promise can at least
hold hope.
Exodus literally means exit, and that is precisely what the
Israelites do, in a way that only God could orchestrate. God
then sets about teaching them how to live in their newfound
freedom. But knowing how to live it and actually living it are
two very different things. With the Law comes the realization
of their need for another Redeemer, one who could free the

going there for shelter?
The widow wondered how she could leave these children.
She had a mission to keep a close eye on these two. The
widow waited, watched and prayed for a chance to help.
Though the children didnt know it, a neighbor became a part
of their life story by keeping surveillance and interceding
from the sidelines.
Before Moses was born, the pharaoh of Egypt issued a
cruel edict: To keep the Hebrew people from becoming too
powerful, every Hebrew baby boy must be killed. But the
Hebrew women waited for the right opportunities to frustrate
Pharaohs genocidal plan. The midwives, mothers and sisters
subverted the edict and saved some of the babies. Moses
mother put the baby Moses in a basket and placed it in the
Nile. Moses sister watched from the shore. Pharaohs
daughter joined in the cause by taking the baby Moses out
of the reeds and into her heart. Even as Moses was saved
from the fate of so many other children, Miriam stood at a
distance to see what would happen to him.
Every newborn baby enters the context of a human story,
even though some of those stories are less than hopeful.
You may see this and realize how unfair the world is. You
want to do something to help but feel sidelined. You wait.
You watch. You pray. You want to perform some act of
practical compassion. The truth is, sometimes the best action
is the sideline action: Wait, watch and pray. God will guide
you to action when the time is right.

The good often cannibalizes the best. Think about it: How
often do schedules, long to-do lists and our immediate line of
sight trump the things we claim to love the most? A pile of

responsibility, but it also involves a need for responsiveness

Hagar
Where have you come from and where are you going?
The question came to Hagar at the pinnacle of a crucial
decision. She was torn between allegiance to her mistress,
Sarai (known as Sarah later in the story), and the innate
desire to be free to raise the baby now growing inside of her.
As with most questions one faces when standing at one of
lifes many crossroads, it haunted her.
Where had she come from? Where was she going? It was
painful for Hagar to reflect on her past, much less attempt to
see through the gauze of an uncertain future, but the angels
question pierced her soul with its persistence.
Where have I come from ? Hagar thought to herself as
she contemplated the events over the past few months. She
concluded that shed come from a place no woman should
have to be.
Ive come from the grasp of a woman who hates me. Ive
come from the burden of carrying a baby whose father loves
someone else. Ive come from a terrifying place of confusion,
isolation and abandonment. Thats where I have come from.
But that was only half of the equation. And where are
you going?
This question was even more painful than the previous one.

you and your ancestors, 12you are to give over to the LORD
the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of
your livestock belong to the LORD. 13Redeem with a lamb
every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its
neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.
14In days to come, when your son asks you, What does
this mean? say to him, With a mighty hand the LORD
brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15When
Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed the
firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I
sacrifice to the LORD the first male offspring of every womb
and redeem each of my firstborn sons. 16And it will be like a
sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the
LORD brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.
Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on
the road through the Philistine country, though that was
shorter. For God said, If they face war, they might change
their minds and return to Egypt. 18So God led the people
around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.[24] The
Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.
19
Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because
Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said,
God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry
my bones up with you from this place.[25]
20After leaving Sukkoth they camped at Etham on the edge
of the desert. 21By day the LORD went ahead of them in a
pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a
pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by
day or night. 22Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the
pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.
Exodus 14
Be Still
Read: Exodus 14:131
Imagine the fear. Youve just escaped from the most
powerful kingdom on earth to follow an 80-year-old
shepherd. Now Pharaoh is coming after you with 600 of his
best chariotsall Pharaohs horses and chariots, horsemen
and troops (Exodus 14:9). The best trained army in the
world is pursuing a ragtag group of Hebrew slaves and camp
followers. Now might be a good time to panic.
We find the Israelites at Pi Hahiroth in an open space with
their backs to the sea and escape seemed impossible. But
this fear was not just in their minds. Pharaoh was coming,
and they had every right to panic. Rather than telling them to
take up arms or run for their lives, Moses gave a surprising
command, Do not be afraid The LORD will fight for you;
you need only to be still. We all know the end of the story.
The waters parted, and the Israelites crossed the sea on dry
land while the sea closed over the pursuing army.
So what can we learn from this well-known story as women
living in the twenty-first century? Perhaps God wants us to
recognize that we all harbor some kind of fearreal or
imagined. For some it may be a fear of the future or a fear of
failure. For others it may be the fear of rejection. Many fear
the threat of terrorism. Some of us may even have a phobia, a
fear that seems irrational to others, but is overwhelming and
life-altering to us. No matter what our fear may be, Gods
Word still resounds, Do not be afraid. Did you notice that
God didnt make fearlessness a suggestion but a command?
So how do we overcome our fears? We can begin by taking
the time to be stillnot always an easy thing to do in our
culture. But with practice and deliberation, we can make the
time and cultivate a lifestyle in which we learn to draw our
courage from our times of stillness, quietness and prayer.
Exodus 14:1314
Moses answered the people, Do not be afraid.
Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD
will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today
you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you;
you need only to be still.
Reflection
1Then
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all
that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east
wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided,
22
and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,
with a wall of water on their right and on their left.
23The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaohs horses
and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea.
24During the last watch of the night the LORD looked down
from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and
threw it into confusion. 25He jammed [27] the wheels of their
chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the
Egyptians said, Lets get away from the Israelites! The
LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.
26Then the LORD said to Moses, Stretch out your hand
over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the
Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen. 27Moses
stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea
went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward [28]
it, and the LORD swept them into the sea. 28The water flowed
back and covered the chariots and horsementhe entire
army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea.
Not one of them survived.
29But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,
with a wall of water on their right and on their left. 30That day
the LORD saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and
Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31And
when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the LORD

1Then
Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into
the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert
without finding water. 23When they came to Marah, they
could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why
the place is called Marah.[34]) 24So the people grumbled
against Moses, saying, What are we to drink?
25Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed
him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water
became fit to drink.
There the LORD issued a ruling and instruction for them and
put them to the test. 26He said, If you listen carefully to the
LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay
attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not
bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians,
for I am the LORD, who heals you.
27Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs
and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the
water.

Heart Troublers
Read: Exodus 20:126
So many things can trouble our hearts. Unpaid bills. A
frightening medical prognosis. Loss of a job. The death of a
loved one. Upcoming surgery. An unexpected move. An
argument with a close friend. A savage rumor. A church
dispute.
The world is full of heart troublers, and it always will be.
Yet Jesus does not want our hearts to remain troubled. And
he does not expect us to deal with those troubles so much
by ignoring them as by turning toward him. As he said to his
anxious disciples in John 14:1, You believe in God; believe
also in me.
What suffering and persecution and pain and difficulties do
is not so much make us weak, as show us we are weak.
Without them, we can deceive ourselves into believing were
prizefighters. With them, were reminded that were not
constructed to function on our own power. The trick is to
allow suffering to be used as a tool to help us depend on
God and not on ourselves.
God didnt go halfway when he went to work on my behalf.
He did it all. Even when I couldnt feel him, even when I
couldnt sense him, even when I wasnt holding on to him
anymore, God worked on my behalf. He didnt need me to do
a thing!
When I faced far worse than my worst imaginings,
something unexpected and wonderful happened. I realized
that God is in control and God is goodeven when bad
things happen in our lives.
Even though I didnt know what I might have to go through
next, I could rest and accept it. Because now I knew that
when I let go, I would fall into the strong hands of God.

27Consecrate those parts of the ordination ram that belong

Gold or God?
Read: Exodus 32:135
Idolatry is alive and well in the modern world. People
worship at the temple of self. They bow down to the god of
money. They make sacrifices to elusive dreams of perfection
the perfect husband, the perfect family, the perfect body,
the perfect life. Perfection becomes a substitute for the gold
and jewels the Israelites used to create idols. As women, we
often find it easier to worship temporal dreams of earthly
perfection than the eternal God. The resplendent life we have
planned shimmers before us, but the mirage will fail to satisfy
our thirst.
does not comfort you when you mourn. Gold will not go with
you into eternity. But God can, and will, do all these things
when you worship him in the Spirit and in truth (John
4:24).
Exodus 32:24
Aaron answered them, Take off the gold earrings
that your wives, your sons and your daughters are
wearing, and bring them to me. So all the people
took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron.
He took what they handed him and made it into an
idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a
tool. Then they said, These are your gods, Israel,
who brought you up out of Egypt.

Then he said to them, This is what the LORD, the God of
Israel, says: Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back

thousand of the people died. 29Then Moses said, You have

own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.
30The next day Moses said to the people, You have
committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the LORD;
perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.
31So Moses went back to the LORD and said, Oh, what a
great sin these people have committed! They have made
themselves gods of gold. 32But now, please forgive their sin
but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.
33T h e LORD replied to Moses, Whoever has sinned

Gods chosen
people, the
Israelites
Between 1446
and 1406 BC
Setting:
At the foot of Mount Sinai, God introduces laws
for living.
Verse to Remember:
I am the LORD, who brought you up out of
Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because
I am holy (11:45).

internal organs and the intestines 12that is, all the rest of
the bullhe must take outside the camp to a place
ceremonially clean, where the ashes are thrown, and burn it
there in a wood fire on the ash heap.
13 If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally
and does what is forbidden in any of the LORDs commands,
even though the community is unaware of the matter, when
they realize their guilt 14and the sin they committed becomes
known, the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin
offering and present it before the tent of meeting. 15The
elders of the community are to lay their hands on the bulls
head before the LORD, and the bull shall be slaughtered
before the LORD. 16Then the anointed priest is to take some
of the bulls blood into the tent of meeting. 17He shall dip his
finger into the blood and sprinkle it before the LORD seven
times in front of the curtain. 18He is to put some of the blood
on the horns of the altar that is before the LORD in the tent of
meeting. The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base
of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of
meeting. 19He shall remove all the fat from it and burn it on
the altar, 20and do with this bull just as he did with the bull
for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make
atonement for the community, and they will be forgiven.
21Then he shall take the bull outside the camp and burn it as
he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the
community.

Leviticus 5
1
8They
are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the
one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck,
not dividing it completely, 9and is to splash some of the
blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar; the rest
of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar. It is
a sin offering. 10The priest shall then offer the other as a
burnt offering in the prescribed way and make atonement for
them for the sin they have committed, and they will be
forgiven.
11 If, however, they cannot afford two doves or two
young pigeons, they are to bring as an offering for their sin a
tenth of an ephah [6] of the finest flour for a sin offering. They
must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin
offering. 12They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a
handful of it as a memorial[7] portion and burn it on the altar
on top of the food offerings presented to the LORD. It is a sin
offering. 13In this way the priest will make atonement for
them for any of these sins they have committed, and they
will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the
priest, as in the case of the grain offering.
Not Guilty
Read: Leviticus 5:1419
Isnt it painful to harm others intentionally? Premeditated
evils can be set right by our finite sense of justice, even if
guilt then rests on our own heads. But imagine the fear and
frustration of being held accountable for hundreds of
violations that you committed without knowing it. Nothing
you ever did would be good enough; you would carry
around the guilt of wrongs you never intended to commit.
Talk about paranoia.
Yet in Old Testament times, you would certainly have been
guilty of such unwitting sins, and they would have required
blood sacrifice. The Law of God was clear: No one could be
good enough, not even those who sinned without
awareness, unintentionally. Few of us think of sin in these
terms today, but God remains the same. His standard of
perfection cannot be attained, even by the best of us on our
best days.
Reflection
1 What unintentional sins have you committed in the past
few days? Spend some time asking God to reveal your
sins to you.
2 Now offer God a sacrifice of repentance and of praise for
declaring you not guilty.
3 Whom can you serve sacrificially? How will you go
about this?

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons
1The LORD
at the entrance to the tent of meeting and eat it there with the
bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was
commanded: Aaron and his sons are to eat it. 32Then burn
up the rest of the meat and the bread. 33Do not leave the
entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days
of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last
seven days. 34What has been done today was commanded
by the LORD to make atonement for you. 35You must stay at
the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven
days and do what the LORD requires, so you will not die; for
that is what I have been commanded.
36So Aaron and his sons did everything the LORD
commanded through Moses.

base of the altar. 10On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys
and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the
LORD commanded Moses; 11the flesh and the hide he
burned up outside the camp.
12
Then he slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons handed
him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the
altar. 13They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece,
including the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14He
washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on
top of the burnt offering on the altar.
15Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people.
He took the goat for the peoples sin offering and
slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with
the first one.
16He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the
prescribed way. 17He also brought the grain offering, took a
handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the
mornings burnt offering.
18He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship
offering for the people. His sons handed him the blood, and
he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 19But the fat
portions of the ox and the ramthe fat tail, the layer of fat,
the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver 20these they laid
on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar.
21Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the
LORD as a wave offering, as Moses commanded.

Holy Fire
Read: Leviticus 10:13
You arrive at a dinner party, bottle of wine in hand, and your
hostess meets you at the door with a scowl. You knew they
didnt drink, but chalked it up to conservatism and thought a
little loosening up was in order. You didnt know your
friends husband had struggled with a drinking problem for
years. You had good intentions, but sometimes good
intentions arent good enough.
We cant always see the reasons for Gods requirements,
any more than we can divine the motivations of our friends.
Nadab and Abihu might have assumed a good intention

12If the disease breaks out all over their skin and, so far as
the priest can see, it covers all the skin of the affected person

disease has covered their whole body, he shall pronounce

whenever raw flesh appears on them, they will be unclean.
15When the priest sees the raw flesh, he shall pronounce
them unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; they have a defiling

must go to the priest. 17The priest is to examine them, and if
the sores have turned white, the priest shall pronounce the
affected person clean; then they will be clean.
