OBJECTIVESINSTUDYINGTHISSECTION
1)ToconcludeourstudyofIsaiahwithalookatthefutureglory
promisedforGod'speople

3)ToconsiderhowthispromiserelatestothefirstcomingofChrist,
withtheinaugurationoftheMessianicage,butalsohowitmaylook
forwardtowhentheLord'sreignisculminatedattheendoftime
(followingHissecondcoming,theresurrectionofthedead,andthe
DayofJudgment)
SUMMARY
WecometothelastsectionofthebookofIsaiah(chapters5466).It
containsmorewordsofcomfortdesignedespeciallyfortheBabylonian
captiveswhowouldexperienceGod'sjudgmentforetoldinthefirsthalf
ofthebook.ThefocusismostlyonTheFutureGloryForGod'sPeople,
yetalsowithareminderthattheirpresentshame(captivity)wasdueto
theirownwickedness.
ThefuturesplendorofZionisthethemeof54:156:8.Thoughbarrenin
herpresentconditionofcaptivity,theLordpromisestoshowmercyand
acovenantofpeacetothefaithfulremnant.Aninvitationisgivento
allwhothirst,andpeopleareencouragedtoseektheLordwhileHemay
befoundiftheydesirejoyandpeace.Participationinthefuture
gloryofZionisofferedalsotorighteousGentiles,whowillbegivena
placeinthehouseofGodandinHisholymountain.Thisfutureglory
ofZionpertainstotheageofMessiah,inauguratedwiththefirst
comingofChristandtheproclamationofthegospelbeginningin
Jerusalem(cf.Lk24:4447;He12:2224).
ThecaptivesinBabylonarethenremindedoftheconditionsthatledto
herdownfall,andthecontritionthatwillledtoherrestoration
(56:959:21).Herwatchmen(i.e.,religiousleaders)hadfailedin
theirduties,andthedeathoftherighteousbecameablessingbecause
itremovedthemfromsuchevil.Theiridolatryhadprofitedthem
nothing,andcostthemeverything.Yetthosewhowerehumbleand
contritewouldexperienceGod'smercyiftheywouldcastaway
hypocriticalformalismandreturntotruereligion.Rebukingthemfor
theirsins,Isaiahthenjoinswiththeminconfessingtheirsins.In
response,theLordpromisessalvationthroughaRedeemerwhowillcome
toZionandtothosewhoturnfromtheirtransgression.Again,thisis
lookingforwardnotjusttotheirrestorationfromBabyloniancaptivity,
butalsotothecomingofJesusChristwhowouldbringfullredemption
throughHisblood(cf.Ro11:2627).
Thefinalsevenchapters(6066)concentrateontheglorytocomefor
restoredZion.HerlightwillcomeandevenGentileswillcome,
contributingtheirwealthtothegloryprovidedbytheLord.The
missionoftheServant(Christ)isreviewed,whowillcometorebuild
andrestore,promptingIsaiahtoexpressgreatjoyforHissalvation.
TheLordpromisesnottorestuntilthattimescomes,andthusappoints
watchmenwhoarechargednottogiveHimrestuntilHemakesJerusalema
praiseintheearth.FollowingabrieflookbackatthejudgmentonEdom
andtheLord'smercyonIsraelinthepast,Isaiahoffersaprayerfor
thepresentconditionofIsrael,andtheLordrespondswithapromiseof
agloriousnewcreationfortheremnantwhoheedHiscall.Thepromise
involvesnewheavensandanewearth,withJerusalemasarejoicing,
depictedintermsthatwouldbeespeciallycomfortingtothepeoplein
Babyloniancaptivity.TheprophecyofIsaiahendswithachapter
containingareminderthattheLordlooksfavorablyuponthepoorand
contriteinspiritwhotrembleatHisword,repeatingthepromisesto
comeforJerusalemandtheendofthewicked(againframedintermsto
comfortthecaptivesinBabylon).

Ibelievemuchofthissectionwasfulfilledwiththeinaugurationof
theMessianicageinthefirstcomingofChrist.Yetinviewofthe
wordsofPeter(cf.2Pe3:1314)andthevisionofJohn(cf.Re2122),
IsaiahmayhavealsolookedforwardtothefuturegloryofZion
(spiritualIsrael,i.e.,thechurch)tobeexperiencedatthe
culminationoftheMessiah'sreignattheendoftime,followingthe
resurrectionandfinaljudgment.ThedifferenceisthatIsaiahcouched
hisdescriptionofthenewheavensandnewearthintermstowhichthe
Babyloniancaptivescouldeasilyrelate,whileJohnwasshownthe
eternaldestinyofGod'speopleinpicturesespeciallycomfortingtothe
persecutedChristiansofthefirstcenturyA.D.
