Im going to speak like a robot. I want you to listen carefully and tell me the
word Im trying to say. Lets practise. The word is c-a-t. What is the robot
trying to say?

Repeat if necessary
Offer each word and record the childs first response
Stop after 3 consecutive errors.
Optional variation rather than saying the word is to let the child point to the matching picture.

Oral segmentation task:


Explain the task to the child

Now its your turn to speak like a robot. Im going to say a word and I want you to
say all the sounds you can hear in the word just like I did in the last game. Lets
practise. The word is cat. The robot would say it like this, c-a-t. You have a go.
How would the robot say mum?

Give correct answer if the child gets it wrong.


Record first responses.
Discontinue after 3 consecutive errors.

Reading task:
resources: words on cards
Explain that a friendly alien has come to earth with a shopping list of words and items he needs to take back
with him. Some of these are real words and some are not. Can you help him read them?
Ask child to say the sound for each letter and then to blend them to make a word.
Record the sounds given by the child and if they are able to blend and read the whole word.
Phase Three Assessment:

Segmentation task:
Say the word and record response exact sounds given by the child.
Encourage them to have a go at spelling this word and record on assessment sheet attach writing to file
