Article Writing

An Article is a piece of writing usually intended for publication in a newspaper,

magazine or journal. It may include amusing stories, reported speech and descriptions.
It can be formal or informal, depending on the target readers. It is in a less formal
style than a report.
An Article
describes an experience, event, person or place.
presents an opinion or balanced argument.
compares and contrasts.
provides information.
offers suggestions.
offers advice.

A good article should have:

1. an eye-catching title to attract the readers attention and suggest the theme of
the article.
2. an introduction which clearly defines the topic to be covered and keeps the
readers interest intact.
3. the main body of two to five paragraphs in which the topic is further developed
in detail.
4. the conclusion, summarising the topic or a final opinion, recommendation or
comment.
Question
Write an article to be published in a local newspaper, expressing your concern at the
rising population in India. Base your article on the points given below:
The rising population in India causes of population growth problems due
to population growth remedies.
Population Explosion: A Grave Challenge
The population bomb in India is constantly ticking. The growing population is the
root cause of many socio-economic challenges faced by India. On the 2.4 per cent
area of the world our country is already supporting a large 16 per cent of the world
population. Possessing such a huge population is like a demographic crisis. Neither
our geographical area nor our limited resources can be made to expand by any means.
Traditionally illiteracy and poverty had been the leading causes for population growth
in India. Lack of awareness amongst people about the drawbacks of a huge family,
1

has led to a major increase in population. Cultural factors like preference for a male
child and considering family planning as a taboo have added to the population growth.
Improved health care facilities have expanded lifespans and increased life expectancy,
further adding to the problem.
Population growth has neutralised our economic growth to a great extent. At least
one third of the growth in our GDP is rendered useless by rapid growth of population.
Resources can only increase arithmetically whereas population grows geometrically. All
our resources are under immense pressure due to this. Shortage of basic necessities
like potable water indicate the strain on the carrying capacity of the Earths biosphere.
The growth of population at a super exponential rate is leading to increased pollution,
change in climate and reduction in the forest cover. It is a source of various social evils
like poverty, unemployment and illiteracy. Development of infrastructure is unable to
meet the pace of growth in population.
At present, the population of our country is more of a burden than an asset. Family
planing and planing for economic prosperity are the only alternatives before us.
Population is the primary cause of many other problems and if the challenge of
checking population growth is not met, all our plans for development will go haywire.

Speech Writing
At some point in our life, whether at school or at the workplace, it is likely that we are
called upon to give a speech. At the ISC Examination, students are required to write a
speech. This means they are required to write their view point on a particular topic in
the format of a speech delivered to a live audience. So, it is more or less like an opinion
based essay but in the format of a speech, where the students are required to use I
and give their personal opinion. The following steps will help you feel confident in the
writing process that is integral to giving a good speech no matter what the topic may be.
First, collect all the relevant information about the topic and write accordingly.
Secondly, write exactly what you want to convey to the audience. As Winston Churchill
said: If you have an important point to make, dont try to be subtle or clever. Use a
pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third
time with a tremendous whack.
The introduction of the speech should immediately let the audience (readers) know
what to expect from the speech. Then go on to elaborate what is said in the introduction
proving it with examples. Make an apt conclusion to your speech by including a strong
affirmative statement.
Question
On the occasion of the Environment Day celebration in your school, you are supposed
to give a speech on the issue of Global Warming. Write your speech based on the points
given below:
Global warming Causes Effects How to check Global Warming.
Global Warming
Respected Principal, Teachers and dear friends.
Today, we are celebrating the World Environment Day. It is satisfying to see that
we are becoming more and more conscious about our enviornment. But at the same
time, it is a matter of deep concern that our activities are largely responsible for the
phenomenon, called Global Warming.
Global Warming occurs as a result of increased concentration of greenhouse gases
in the atmosphere. The main greenhouse gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide,
methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. These gases do now allow all the radiations from
the Earth to escape back into space. This is known as the Greenhouse Effect. This
trapped radiation increases the temperature on the Earth to keep the Earth. Now,
how are these gases released in the atmosphere?

Increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is caused by

burning of fossil fuels, industrial pollution, vehicular pollution, depletion of the
Ozone layer in the atmosphere and clearning away of forests and disturbing the forest
ecosystem on a large scale. This has resulted in changes in rainfall patterns, melting
of glaciers and ice caps leading to rise in sea level and radiation imbalance.
So, the need of the hour is not just being aware but taking remedial steps to prevent
our planet from such a catastrophe. We dont have to go miles away from home to
protest, or spend masses of money. If we try to follow the few simple steps we can
make a big difference.
We can do so by reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by using alternative
sources of energy like solar energy, checking deforestation and undertakingafforestation.
By reducing, reusing and recyclying. Only buy what you need; dont stock the things
you may or may not use. Reuse whatever you can, like containers and paper, and
recycle what you cannot reuse.
So please take into consideration what I have said, and try to do your part. After all,
it will be our next generation that is likely to feel the major effects.

I am constantly looking out for stimulating and thought-provoking material. It was
therefore only natural that I drifted towards studying English Literature at school.
Apart from simply enjoying reading and writing I am also attracted to learn more about
literature and the written word because to me it is more than a rewarding challenge,
it is an active pleasure. I want to earn a degree in English Literature from a reputed
college. This will not only enable me to pursue my career goal, i.e., to become a
successful journalist, but would also give me an opportunity to become the voice of
the downtrodden and raise the issues concerned with their lives. Apart from this, I
want so start a Boarding School for the poor children, similar to the gurukuls we had
in ancient times but with all the modern facilities.
With determination and hard-work, I am sure I will turn all my dreams and aspirations
into reality.
