Technical
Power and Economy

1. Over 20% improved tyre rolling resistance; less rolling energy to move
means better fuel economy.
2. 6-speed automatic transmission allows you to maximise power and make
the most of Rangers payload and towing capacity. Driver Recognition
software ensures youre always in the right gear and holds gears when cornering or driving up or down hills, plus you can select gears manually using
the Sequential Sports Shift.
3. High-pressure fuel injection system running at 1800bar, this system delivers an extremely precise injection of fuel for more power and torque, and
substantially less fuel consumption, emissions and noise.
4. eVGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) provides lower end torque capability for improved pull-away, under load. the 3.2L TDCi 470Nm diesel
engine delivers 90% of peak torque between 1500 and 2750rpms.

Anti-Lock Control - Traction Control

The traction control system is integrated into the anti-lock brake system and
uses the same wheel speed sensors and hydraulic control unit (HCU). The
HCU has additional internal solenoid valves and a self priming pump
incorporated to enable brake pressure increases without pressure in the
master cylinder.
Brake Traction Control System (BTCS)
Brake traction control uses controlled braking of the spinning driving wheel
when there is a variation in traction at the driven wheels.
The BTCS assists traction in a pull away from rest situation and can become
active at road speeds . When the BTCS is active the driver is made aware of
the fact by the flashes of a warning indicator located in the instrument
cluster.
12

Copyright 2012 Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

Technical
The spinning wheel is braked by the anti-lock braking system (ABS) which
transfers a greater proportion of the engine torque, via the differential, to the
other driven wheel, thereby increasing the utilization of the available
traction.
To prevent the risk of stalling the engine, the BTCS reads engine speed data
from the high speed CAN bus. If this data is faulted or not available, the
BTCS will not function and the warning will be permanently on.
There is no driver disable switch for BTCS, BTCS is turned off when the ESP
Off switch is pushed at 2WD mode in 2WD and 4WD vehicle. And, BTCS is
not turned off even if the ESP Off switch is pushed when the mode is 4WD Hi
and 4WD Lo in 4WD vehicle. Also, BTCS is always off regardless of ON/OFF
of the ESP Off switch when ELRD(electronic Locking Rear Differential) is on.
ESP has the logic of the brake fade detection named BTM(Brake
Temperature Mode). This logic presumes the temperature of the brake pad,
and prohibits BTCS when state of the brake fade(overheat). And, it lights up
the ESP warning indicator. When the brake gets cold, ESP warning indicator
is turned off. And, it returns to the state that BTCS can be operated again. As
a result, the thermal destruction of the base brake is prevented.

Technical
1. Twin-piston callipers reduce weight
and improve thermal performance.
2. New coil-over-strut suspension
improves tuning of the upper and
lower wishbone for a more car-like
ride and handling.
3. Hydromount offers the ability to
damp a broad range of shake inputs
for a consistently smooth ride in
both the best and most difficult
road conditions. Available on select
Double and Single Cab diesel models only.
4. Larger front rotors for optimum
braking performance, even when
carrying a load.

Dynamic Stability Program (DSC)

Hill Descents Control

Brakes are automatically applied, as
needed, to slow the vehicle to a set
speed, without the driver needing to
use the brake pedal. Speed can be adjusted through the accelerator and the
Cruise Control buttons on the steering
wheel. Works in forward and reverse

Hill Launch Assist

No more roll-back when starting or reversing uphill. Brake pressure is held
for two seconds after the brake pedal
has been released and the accelerator
pedal has been pressed.

Technical
Traction Control System

Maximises traction and helps avoid wheel spin. Sensors individually monitor
each wheel for speed and slip, and automatically brake or increase torque,
as needed.
Adaptive Load Control

Automatically adjusts the Dynamic Stability Control parameters to match

the load and ensure all controls remain effective across different loads, or
with no load at all.

Trailer Sway Assist

Constantly monitors behavior of the
tow vehicle and trailer and automatically corrects instability or sway using a left-right braking pattern and
engine torque.

15

Technical

Rollover Mitigation
Helps prevent the vehicle getting into
a roll-over situation.

Emergency Brake Assist

Maintains maximum brake pressure in an emergency stopping situation.

Braked towing capacity of 3.350 ton

dependant on final drive ratio (FDR)
and available only when fitted with a
Genuine Ford towpack and tow ball.

Technical
Trailer towbar
If the vehicle is delivered from the factory with a towbar, then this is
equipped with a 13-pin socket. For aftermarket installation, both a variant
with a 13-pin socket and also a variant with a 7 pin socket are available in
service.
The fundamental difference between the two variants:
The 7-pin version does not support deactivation of the parking aid (if it is
installed in the vehicle).
The trailer towbar module is connected to constant positive at the
passenger compartment fuse box (terminal 30, fuse 23).
For the 13-pin version, the trailer towbar module is connected with the
parking aid module. As soon as a connector is inserted into the socket, the
rear parking aid is deactivated.

2. A more rigid frame, twice as stiff as the previous model, also delivers a
smoother ride.

Non-monocoque bodywork
Non-monocoque bodywork is built onto a frame or a chassis. Frames used
for this have various construction forms, e.g. the ladder frame or tube
frame. Non-monocoque bodywork is the original way of constructing
vehicles.
The ladder frame is still commonly used today for truck and off-road
vehicles. The bodywork is placed on the frame or chassis. The total load
which occurs while driving is transferred to the chassis.
Special features of non-monocoque bodywork construction:
Partly large surface panels and high volume shaped parts.
Thicker materials and greater reinforcements in the frame area.
Floor pan as frame structure with high torsional rigidity and flexural
strength.
Side panels only make a small contribution to the overall stability of the
body.
Instructions for repair:
A different repair technique is necessary during repairs. A deformed frame
structure requires high suction power during straightening repairs.
Frequently, the body also has to be detached from the frame structure in
order to carry out separate repair.
Due to the very stable frame structure, please note that the straightening
behaviour is completely different to that of a passenger vehicle. The frame
and the attached body must be repaired independently of each other.
Further information can be found in the respective body repair manual.

Body
Body and Frame
With the 2011.25 model year, the Ford Ranger is superseded by a completely
new vehicle. The T6 is based on the U1 platform which has been developed
in co-operation with Mazda. 2-door and 4-door body versions are offered.
Within the company the model designation is P375. Overall the vehicle
weighs less than its predecessor. However, it offers increased occupant
safety through the use of high-strength and super-high-strength steels. The
high-strength and super-high-strength steels used make extra demands on
the tools to be employed for some body repairs.

Body
Usibor steel
The reinforcements at the A- and B-pillars are made of Usibor steel. This
material has a yield strength of 1300 MPa. Sectional repairs must NOT be
performed on components made of Usibor! The required continuous MIG
weld seam in the cut area would cause structural changes in the steel
and lead to a significant loss in strength. In the event of damage, the
complete component must therefore always be renewed. Also, because of
the strength of these components, it is not always possible to work them
with conventional body repair tools or welding work (resistance spot
welding and inert gas puddle welding), additional preparation work and/or
special welding equipment are required.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH)

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) is becoming more important as
vehicles become more sophisticated and passenger comfort levels increase.
This section is designed to aid in the diagnosis and testing and repair of NVH
concerns.
Noise is defined as sounds not associated with the operation of passenger
compartment equipment that interface with customer satisfaction.
Vibration is defined as impulses felt by the customer that are not caused
by road surface changes.
Harshness is a ride quality issue where the customer feels that the vehicle
response to the road surface is sharply transmitted to the customer.

Restraint System
Air Bags
Highly flammable, explosive observe No Smoking policy.
Used as a safety restraint system mounted in the steering wheel and
passenger side of the instrument panel.
The inflator contains a high-energetic propellant which, when ignited,
produces a VERY HOT GAS (2500C).
The gas generant used in air bags is Sodium Azide. This material is
hermetically sealed in the module and is completely consumed during
deployment. No attempt should be made to open an air bag inflator as this
will lead to the risk of exposure to Sodium Azide. If a gas generator is
ruptured, full protective clothing should be worn when dealing with the
spillage. After normal deployment, gloves and safety goggles must be worn
during the handling process.
Deployed air bags should be disposed of in a plastic bag in accordance with
local regulations at an approved chemical waste site.

Restraint System
RCM (Restraint Control Module)
Electronic sensors are incorporated
into the RCM; these measure the
vehicle acceleration / deceleration in
the event of a collision. The
calculated value is evaluated by the
RCM to determine the severity of the
impact.
The RCM compares the values it
receives from the crash sensor, side
impact sensors and the internal
electronic sensors. If the deceleration,
due to a frontal or side impact,
exceeds the stored value the RCM will
trigger the air bag modules and the
safety belt pretensioners as required.
The RCM can be used again after a
collision, provided the RCM is not
physically damaged and it passes a
self-test.

Passenger air bag deactivation switch

When the ignition is switched on, a
warning lamp in the instrument panel
indicates that the passenger air bag
module has been deactivated.

Restraint System
Driver air bag and driver lower air bag

This vehicle line is available with a steering wheel mounted driver air bag and
a driver lower air bag (knee air bag).

Side impact sensors

Side impact sensor (Front doors)
There are two side impact sensors
located in the front driver and
passenger doors. The sensors
transmit digitally encoded pressure
information to the RCM, where it is
evaluated to assess the severity of a
side impact. Power is supplied to the
sensor by the RCM. If the sensor fails,
the RCM stores a diagnostic trouble
code (DTC).
Side impact sensor (Rear side)
There are two side impact sensors
located at the bottom of the C-pillars
in stretch cab and double cab
variants. The sensors transmit
digitally encoded acceleration
information to the RCM, where it is
evaluated to assess the severity of a
side impact. Power is supplied to the
side impact sensor by the RCM. If the
senor fails, the RCM stores a
diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Restraint System
Side air curtain
In the event of a side impact, the side
air curtains (curtain air bags) deploy
from the headliner, protecting the first
and second row outboard occupants
during a side impact.

Front impact severity sensor

There are two front impact severity
sensors located at the front of the
vehicle, behind the radiator grille.
The sensors transmit digitally
encoded acceleration information to
the RCM, where it is evaluated to
assess the severity of a front impact.
Power is supplied to the sensor by the
RCM. If the sensor fails, the RCM
stores a diagnostic trouble code
(DTC).

Safety belt retractor and pretensioners

The front outboard seat belts are
available equipped with a retractor
pretensioner and load limiter. In the
event of a collision, the safety belt
pretensioner deploy in one of two
ways:
On their own.
Simultaneously with the front air
bag module(s).
Safety belt use is necessary to obtain
the best occupant protection and to
receive the full advantage of the SRS.

Restraint System
Side air bag
The side air bags are incorporated in
the front seat backrests and side air
bag modules deploy from the
outboard of front seat backrest upon
a side impact.
When a side air bag is deployed, the
seam of the seat cover tears open
enabling the side air bag to inflate
unhindered from the front seat
backrest.

Passenger air bag

The passenger air bag is designed to
provide increased collision protection
for front seat passengers.

Clockspring Adjustment
If there is a break between installing
the clockspring and steering wheel
rotation sensor assembly and
installing the steering wheel, the
centralizing of the clockspring must
be repeated.
If the centralization of the
clockspring is in doubt, the
centralizing of the clockspring must
be repeated.
Make sure that the road wheels are in
the straight ahead position.
1. Turn the clockspring in a clockwise
direction until a resistance is felt.
2. Turn the clockspring in a counterclockwise direction 2.5 revolutions,
until the arrow marked on the rotor
of the clockspring aligns with the
raised 'V' section on the outer cover
of the clockspring.
