Mapping TOEFL ITP scores


to the CEFR

methodology of the TOEFL test right in your classroom.

This mapping study identified the minimum TOEFL ITP Level 1


test scores corresponding to four levels of the Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
TOEFL ITP awards three levels of certificates as proof of
achievement of English language proficiency. Each level
corresponds to a CEFR level: C1 (Gold certificate);
B2 (Silver certificate); B1 (Bronze certificate).

CEFR General Descriptions

Can understand a wide range of demanding texts, and


recognize implicit meaning. Can express himself/herself
fluently and spontaneously without searching for expressions.
Can use language flexibly for social, academic and professional
purposes. Can produce well-structured text on complex
subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns,
connectors and cohesive devices.

Can understand main ideas of complex, abstract and concrete


texts, and technical discussions in their field of specialization.
Interacts fluently and spontaneously with native speakers
without strain. Can produce clear, detailed text on a range of
subjects. Can explain views on topical issues citing advantages
and disadvantages.

Can understand main points of clear standard input found


in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with situations while
traveling where the language is spoken. Can produce
simple, clear text on familiar or personal topics. Can describe
experiences, events, dreams and aspirations. Can give
explanations of opinions and plans.

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions


about areas of immediate relevance. Can communicate
about routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of
information. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his or her
background, environment and matters of immediate need.

Note: The cut scores represent the minimum scores needed to enter the CEFR levels. These recommendations are based on the results of mapping studies with
expert panels and data analyses of test-taker scores.

The TOEFL ITP Assessment Series and the TOEFL test are used for separate
purposes and administered differently. The TOEFL test is a high-stakes exam
administered by ETS. TOEFL test scores are used by institutions to make major
