General Discussion Section Format

We will usually start the section with a quiz (worth 10 points). Following
this, we will discuss the readings from that week. If there is time left
over, we will talk about topics from lecture that may be confusing
(staying for this last part is optional).

Please Remember:

1. Students must read discussion material before coming to

discussion. Please bring current reading material to class.
Participation, punctuality, and attendance are expected for ALL

sessions.
2. When emailing me, please include ‘BIO 118’ in the subject line.
3. For special needs regarding exams, notify either me or Dr.
Spillane at least 2 weeks in advance of the exam.
4. There is no official provision for make-up exams. In case of
emergency, contact Dr. Spillane immediately.
5. You will be allowed to make-up a quiz ONLY if you have a valid
EXCUSED absence from discussion. Documentation will be
expected for this.
6. If you are unable to make a discussion section and need to attend
another at a different time, please email me one week
beforehand and I will make arrangements with the other GSI for
that week.
7. Discussion points (10 points) will be awarded at the end of the
semester and will be based on my overall assessment of how
frequently you have been present for the entire discussion (not
just the quiz), as well as your participation during discussion.
8. Since this section will involve discussion and class participation
(no powerpoint) there is no reason to use your laptop
during class! Laptops, itouches, etc. are distracting and
unnecessary and should NOT be used during class.
9. Cheating during exams is considered a very serious academic
offense. Any student found indulging in such activity will be
removed from the examination hall, and no provision for make-up
exams will be provided.
10. All quiz grades will be posted on SAMS within the week; you have
access through Ctools.
