GENERAL
1.1

Scope
a. This Standard Specification covers the fabrication of low chrome and stainless steel
internals.
b. Exceptions or variations shown in the UOP Project Specifications take precedence over
requirements shown herein.

1.2

References
Unless noted below, use the edition and addenda of each referenced document current on the
date of this Standard Specification. When a referenced document incorporates another
document, use the edition of that document required by the referenced document.
a. American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,
Section VIII, Division 1, Pressure Vessels.
b. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section I, Rules for the Construction of Power
Boilers.
c. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX, Qualification Standard for
Welding and Brazing Procedures, Welders, Brazers, and Welding and Brazing
Operators.
d. American Welding Society (AWS), A4.2, Standard Procedures for Calibrating Magnetic
Instruments to Measure the Delta Ferrite Content of Austenitic and Duplex FerriticAustenitic Stainless Steel Weld Metal.
e. National, state, and local governmental regulations and laws.

2.

MATERIALS
2.1

Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steel in services over 1000F (538C) shall have a minimum carbon
content of 0.04%.

2.2

Low Chrome Steel

Low chrome steel shall be furnished in the normalized and tempered condition. This
requirement applies to the plate used in fabrication of large diameter fusion welded pipe but
not the pipe after fabrication. Accelerated cooling from the normalizing temperature is
acceptable where permitted by the applicable product form specification.

FABRICATION
3.1

Welding
a. Welding shall be in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section I
or Section VIII, Division 1, and Section IX regardless of whether or not the weld is
pressure containing.
b. Welding shall be by a metal arc process and all welds shall be full penetration.
c. Permanently welded backup strips shall not be used.
d. Welds joining identical steels shall employ matching filler metal.
e. Welds joining low chrome steels using SMAW shall be joined with low hydrogen
electrodes. Proper care (including rod ovens) shall be taken to ensure the low hydrogen
nature of the rods.
f. Welds joining Type 304 stainless steel to Type 304 stainless steel shall be made using
Type 308 or Type 309 filler metal.
g. Welds joining Type 321 stainless steel shall be made using Type 347 filler metal.
h. The ferrite content of austenitic stainless steel weld deposits shall be controlled to a
Welding Research Council (WRC) Ferrite Number (FN) of 3 minimum to 8 maximum.
FN control shall be by reference to the DeLong Constitution Diagram for stainless steel
weld metals. The limit defined above shall be confirmed by thoroughly checking the
final deposits prior to post weld heat treatment with a magnetic instrument calibrated in
accordance with the standard procedure defined in AWS A4.2. Tests shall be conducted
on each strength weld.

3.2

Heat Treating
a. Weld joints shall be preheated in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code Section I or Section VIII, Division 1 as applicable.
b. Weld joints shall be post weld heat treated in accordance with the ASME Boiler and
Pressure Vessel Code Section I or Section VIII, Division 1 as applicable.
c. Flange facings shall be protected against oxidation during heat treatment.

3.3

Examination
Welds not requiring radiograph examination shall be magnetic particle or liquid dye
penetrant examined in accordance with the appropriate appendix of ASME Boiler and
Pressure Vessel Code Section I or Section VIII, Division 1 as applicable.
