the time he is said to have taken.

Three hours with a pad and pencil in
bed, then Philippe Starck had sketched the object about which, many
years later, people are still heatedly
debating. A, the 119-metre-long
result of that night and realised by
HDW, splits owners, designers,
engineers or pure yacht-lovers, like you perhaps are, into only two
groups: admirers and opponents. There is no in-between. I wanted to stir up the rather conservative scene, Starck once said
about his design. Broadly speaking, the bow, the extremely long
foredeck and the superstructure alone are enough to qualify A
for her title as the most extravagant solitaire in yachting history.
Readers who get more deeply immersed in the article on page 32
will learn that A also does justice to this role with other details.

phase. This worked better in the north of Berlin, quasi the second
construction site of A. In weeks of meticulous work, a shipyard
for miniatures completed a model of the yacht just 1.19 metres
long, so on a scale of 1:100. How does that work? See page 94.

The interest in the second Abu Dhabi Yacht Show is intense, and especially now that the new venue of Yas Marina (F1 grand prix backdrop) has been announced where all exhibitors including those without boats will have a waterside presence. After the premiere event
was quite respectably booked with about 100 exhibitors, including large yachts up to the 90-metre Lauren L from Liveras Yachts, the
organisers are expecting an increase of about 50 percent at
the show from 25th to 27th February. Amongst others, the
shipyards Feadship, Amels, Westport, Fincantieri, Burger,
Trinity and, of course, the local hero, Abu Dhabi Mar are
expected. It is speculated that the latter will berth its 141metre Swift alongside this year, the show branding itself

Balcony is the simple name the Italian equipment experts at Besenzoni have given their latest innovation for yachts longer than 35 metres.
As the name suggests this innovative system is a balcony that can be

elements that can be operated independent of each other via a touchscreen in the cabin. Whilst the terrace is extended hydraulically from the
ships side, railing supports fold out automatically from the floor to

Upgrade to one of the seven sisters

Benetti is expanding its Semi-Custom range. One reason why is to aid customer retention.

The new Benetti Class entry-level models: above the 32-metre Tradition 105, below the 28metre Delfino 90. Both are due for a summer launch and sport the hallmark fashion plates.

behind this Righini identity.

Owners regularly like to upgrade, sticking to one brand
or one designer. They often
buy the next model up from
the builder that they trust.
Production of the first units
is making rapid progress.
Both the smallest models, the
28-metre Delfino and the 32metre Tradition, are due to be
delivered by the summer.
The Delfino, incidentally a

The owner is thus provided

Benetti, with sites in Fano,

again. Using the Benetti

offers seven new models,

bears the same design hallmark. Stefano Righini, who
has already created a number

which the builder believes are
slender and elegant.

When commissioning this yacht the owner Andrey

Melnichenko had originally not intended to push back any
engineering and design boundaries. When he then got
hooked on a design by the French designer Philippe Starck,
one decision led to another. Starck, so the legend goes,
came up with As radical design during the course of one
sleepless night. The industrial designer, furniture stylist and
hotel interiors guru is not regarded by many as a qualified
yacht designer, despite his work on the Feadship Wedge
Too, but rather as a highly successful outside-the-box
thinker. Starck sees himself as a director, who wants to tell
a story and amaze people. After Starck managed to convince the owner, the actual task of transforming the radical
A story into a workable design fell to Martin Francis. The
naval designer (for he is not a qualified naval architect)

took a year to complete this exercise. After several runs in

the test tank, the likewise not so conservative Francis, who
had amazed the industry in 1991 with Eco (75 metres),
came up with a hull design with tumblehome bow that is
strikingly similar to the US Navys next-generation
Zumwalt class of destroyers. Kiel-based HDW won the
beauty contest to find the right builder. It took four years,
including development time, before A was launched. The
owner, his guests and the crew will probably be able to live
with the fact that Starcks design has reduced the size of
the interior to that of a 90-metre, as well as with the fact
that the wind will blow across the terrace on the foredeck,
even when at anchor. A profile such as this one, the industry argues, may perhaps never be built again. Today A is
already of historical significance to the yacht design sector.

A VERY ALTERNATIVE
DESIGN CONCEPT
Reality was never his scene, said the designer Philippe Starck, describing
himself. When you look at the profile of 119-metre A, you can quite
believe him. His colleague Martin Francis, known for Eco, brought a
sense of nautical reality into the equation. HDW built this eyecatcher.

The alternative hull, the alternative superstructure, the alternative

yacht: the way waves are generated already tell you that A needs
to be judged by other standards. The yachting world agrees that she
is the most unusual yacht ever to have been launched. The builder
mastered this risky challenge during a four-year construction period.

The alternative foredeck: instead of placing it behind a protective

superstructure, Starck positioned the alfresco furniture on the
foredeck beneath a canopy that looks like a visor. There is space
for a number of seating arrangements, oversized sofas and a
dining table beneath this substantial source of shade. The pool is
a contrasting rectangle with glass panelling for a view astern. The
saloon can be opened on both sides (left) and provides a passage
to the aft section where loungers, extensive seating and a Jacuzzi
are placed beneath a less prominent sun shade (below right).

to the original design by Philippe Starck. Both hull and superstructure similar
to US Navy destroyers can slice through heavy waters and enormous waves.

The alternative interior: the owners bed is positioned with

a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair on a rotating pedestal.
The washbasin is close by in the middle of the room set in an
acrylic table, whilst the polished stainless steel Jacuzzi can be
seen by the window. Starck was liberal in his use of baroquestyle accessories, such as the massive standard lamp. Guests
are accommodated in reflective surroundings. The designer
even positioned a Jacuzzi in the saloon. Starck refreshingly
defies conventions and there is little nautical style evident.

Alternative materials: marble

is one of the tried and trusted
materials used in the yachts
bathrooms. Starck chose
proud basins in Baccarat
crystal and placed them on
acrylic tables. One maritime
feature is the oiled teak floor.

The alternative profile: Starck did not attach great importance

to a generous amount of space. The superstructure looks like
the glass conning tower on a submarine. The builder installed
the owners suite, the bridge and the saloon on its decks. The
oval windows in the hull provide guests with light. One can see
hatches aft of the helipad which are in fact pop-up wave-breakers.
Imtech supplied the integrated bridge and Steen the anchor gear.

However Starck has not only
gained experience with lemon

marinas and buildings and
interiors ashore. When talking
about a hotel he designed, he
stated he wanted to wake
people out of the soporific
state into which a society
that produces nothing but
onlookers has cast them.

the tumblehome hull required inventiveness. And where did other problems crop up? Just smoothing the mas-

sive surfaces was difficult enough. The

hatches in front of the tender garage are
each 14 metres long and 4.5 metres
high. Nothing can be allowed to warp. It
was the seven hatchways on each side
that necessitated having to take strength
into account. The hatches in the anchor
room that enable people to observe the
yacht as she manoeuvres also caused
headaches. Cranes, anchors, antennas,
tenders and toys are absolutely forbidden to detract from the overall shape in
any way. Everything is cleverly concealed. The hydraulic system plays a crucial role with this wealth of applications.

Sail or power: a hybrid that can harness the winds energy in good conditions or keep to long-range exploration schedules under motor.

THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS

Joubert Nivelt Goeffers and JFA shipyard have picked up on a new trend. With an interior
by Rhoades Young, Hortense can be considered to be either an exploration motor
yacht with good sailing capabilities or a ketch with a long range motor yacht autonomy.
