Self-efficacy and Chemistry Performance of Grade 9 students. Undergraduate
Thesis, West Visayas State University, Iloilo, March 2015
Abstract
This descriptive correlational study was concerned with determining the level of anxiety,
self-efficacy and performance of Grade 9 students towards Chemistry. It also aimed to
ascertain the relationship between chemistry anxiety and self-efficacy and its influence
to Chemistry performance of Grade 9 students. Specifically, the study sought to answer
the following questions (1) Taken as an entire group, what is the level of Chemistry
performance, Chemistry anxiety, and Self-efficacy of Grade 9 students?; (2) Is there a
significant difference in Chemistry performance, Chemistry anxiety, and Self-efficacy in
terms of gender and socio-economic status of Grade 9 students?; (3) Is there a
significant relationship among Chemistry anxiety, self-efficacy and Chemistry
performance of Grade 9 students?. The respondents of this study were the two hundred
sixty-one (261) randomly selected Grade 9 students, 126 are male and 135 are female,
who took their Chemistry subject in the second grading period of the school year 20142015. They were selected through stratified random sampling procedures.
The researcher design of this study is a descriptive correlational research. The
instruments were submitted for validation through the panel of five validators.
Suggestions for the improvement of the instruments were integrated in the final draft.
These were pilot tested to 84 Grade 9 students of Cabatuan Comprehensive High

School, Cabatuan, Iloilo for reliability. The final instruments were implemented to the
actual respondents of the study. The statistical test used were mean and standard
deviation for descriptive analysis and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), T-test and
Pearson-Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation Test for inferential statistics. The
findings of the study were: (1) taken as an entire group, the Grade 9 of Pavia National
High School were approaching proficiency in their chemistry performance, have
moderate anxiety level towards chemistry and low self-efficacy; (2) there is no
significant difference in the students Chemistry performance, Chemistry anxiety and selfefficacy when classified according to sex and socioeconomic status, specifically their
family monthly income.(3) there is a significant relationship between self-efficacy and
Chemistry performance of Grade 9 students.
